here are my first test miniatures for the Ultramarines ... I can honestly say that this might be the best I can do regarding shadowing/highlighting

Yes ... three of them have cloaks. This is some third party product, but I bought these cloaks years ago so I cannot give you more information. Sorry ...

And here is Perturabo - Primarch of the Iron Warriors. Normally I paint some test Space Marines to get used to a Legion color scheme ... not this time.

As much as I despise the majority of the Primarch models (the models, not your paint work!)...I really like your basic Ultramarines. Keep going!

the dagger actually has blood on the blade ... its just not visible in the picture

first time I used blood on weapons ... I continued that with my work on Konrad Curze

As someone who has read (parts of) the Horus Heresy and the Night Lords books, I jumped at this thread immediately.
A lot of fun and I think there's a visible improvement in your work from start until now, especially in bright colors.
Those Ultramarines are quite impressive.

My complaint isn't really your fault I guess, but I think the bases of Primarch minis are terrible, all across the board and wherever I've seen them.
I get it's more of an exposition model maybe, but putting the minis on a boulder doesn't help making them more intimidating or impressive to me. Anyway, that's more of a side note and doesn't take away anything from this thread. Awesome!

Thanks for the positive feedback! I am ambivalent concerning the bases for the HH chracaters. I really loved to paint some of them, e.g. Horus or Perturabo. I just hate that price of the models just rises through the roof because the bases get bigger and bigger. I someohow understand larger bases for the Primarchs ... it really makes them stand out in my glass cabinet. But the bases for Sevatar, Eidolon or even Sigismund got a little out of hand.

also found some Iron Hand Tactical Squad Marines in my gallery ...

I like Rouboute's face, he looks haggard, as you would be if your brothers were trying to kill you. Also, the base looks good; I've seen some that went for a swirly marble look and didn't pull it off. Iron Warriors are similarly superb.

yeah, you are right ... thats why I meant I messed up the face ... he really looks like "on his last legs" and really worn out

I can understand why you don't like his face, but I honestly think it looks quite good, he looks just as he should, incredibly tired and worn out, running an empire must be stressful!

Your painting is very good mate, but if I may, I think you need to work on your faces and skin tones a little bit, I really like your guilliman model and paint job, but the face lets it down, either way, it was nice to see your blog.

thanks for your comments ... as said I am not happy with Gullis face myself ... there is a reason I'd rather go for helmeted version of characters. thera are some (like Sigismund) which worked out much better IMO

Have you seen Darren Latham's faces tutorial?
With your skill, you should be able to get a lot out of it.

Thanks mate ... I do not think all of them look bad, but hat dwarf face looks so good ... I do not know if I can pulls this off though ...

Keep up the excellent work Fireball. I don't care for the Primarch models but you paint them well enough! I vastly prefer your basic Ultramarines which look wonderful!

here is my Custodes Shield Captain ... I painted the 5 plastic Custodes plus the FW Tribune ... I have seen enough gold for awhile ...
