Congratulations Fango for winning this Competition!
You squeaked in under the deadline and pulled off the win!
(kinda like the terrain competition equivalent to sliding in to Home plate...I think, we don't actually play baseball down here, so more of a dive over the try line for all of you who prefer rugby)

I also completely missed that voting thread!

Great comp though, all very different and varied entries. GG Fango, the colours on that spawning pool are really good

...this could have been because somebody (no names will be named) may have forgot to link it in this thread

as compensation, and in tribute to our winner here is what I've been working on recently

Inspired by Fango's spawn pod

and of course the non "special" versions

The three "special projects" I did during this competition together

All in theme, the dinosaur skeleton is a childs toy, the GorkaMorka trukk from my childhood (stretching it a bit there aren't I?) and a buzzer squig nest complete with newly hatched buzzer squigs getting ready to make their angry, angry, way in the world.

and everything I've done during the course of the competition.

(man, that is a terrible photo) all up it's 4 square feet of solid terrain

and the tutorial I promised (spoilered for being very, very, pic heavy)

CONSTRUCTION
Spoiler:

Things you'll need: Cork Tile (6mm), Insulation Foam, Cutting Mat, Vivid, Knife and Craft Glue (ignore the name it's in no way related to super glue)

Cut Cork Tile to desired shape for base.

Bevel edges, I do one cut all round at about 45 degrees staying about 2 mm away from the bottom edge for strength then go around again shaving off the sharp edge along the top and bottom. after that you can sand the base to get a smooth finish but I know I'll be texturing it later so don't bother.

Trace around the base on the insulation foam with the vivid, cut it out and glue it onto the base.

Once the glue is dry, shave the foam down to get a smooth mound.

Cut a chunk of foam the size you want for your rock (for larger rocks you may need to glue sheets of foam together first to get the desired thickness.)

Cut foam chunk down to rough shape.

then go in and refine the surface trying to avoid large flat sections (note, this is a different piece to the previous image, I was doing the whole batch at once and got them mixed up during the photos from here on out.)

Cut a flat surface into the top of your base mound large enough to fit your rock spire and scratch some hatch marks into this surface to give the glue something to grip too. (do the same to the base of the rock spire.)

Glue the rock spire onto the base mound. Once the glue is dry reshape the mound to fit the the rocks base. (don't worry about any gaps we will be filling them at a later stage.)

Congratulations you have constructed your first rock spire!

TEXTURING
Spoiler:

Things you'll need: Air Drying Clay (doesn't need to be terracotta, mine just is), Bowl of Water, Large Gravel, Small Gravel, Texture Gel, Gloss Gel, PVA Glue,Super Glue, Cheap Paintbrush and a Painting Tray.

Smooth air drying clay around base to fill gaps and smooth joins (best way I've found is to roughly put the clay in place then wet your fingers in a bowl of water and smooth everything by hand.) let the clay dry before moving to the next stage (a small heater can speed this process up.)

Paint on the Texturing Gel, completely covering places that will be sand and lightly covering places that will be rock (artists texturing gel is the same as GW basing paint but way cheaper - you could also do this with watered down PVA and Sand but texturing gel doesn't need a second coat of glue to seal it after so saves time.)

Once the Texturing Gel is dried (once again a fan heater can speed this along) Paint over the rock sections with the Gloss Gel, this will unify the grit from the texturing gel and provide a more complex texture. (vary up your application making sure to avoid leaving brush marks)

Once the Gloss Gel is dried, do a second coat of Texture Gel to the sand areas stippling it on to avoid brush strokes.

once the sand is dry, super glue some large gravel around the base of the spire to represent fallen rocks.

Give the super glue an hour or two to dry (otherwise you'll end up gluing your brush bristles together)
apply water down PVA and small gravel to the base of the spire and around the large gravel, let this dry and then flood it with another layer of watered down PVA to make sure it's well sealed down.

Once everything is dry your rock spire will be fully textured!

PAINTING
Spoiler:

Things you'll need: Desert Yellow Paint, Leather Brown Paint, Bleached Bone Paint and Matt Varnish (to speed things up coloured primer is a great help, don't worry all the coats of filler, texturing paste and glue should have perfectly sealed the foam so spray away) it's best to use cheap craft paint for this but I had a bunch of half full miniature paints spare so used them.

Base coat the rocks Leather Brown and the sand Desert Yellow.

Drybrush the rocks with a 3/1 ratio of Leather Brown and Bleached Bone
Afterwords Drybrush the sand with a 3/1 ratio of Desert Yellow and Bleached Bone don't worry about being perfect, doing the sand after the rocks gives a sandy weathering effect.

Drybrush the rocks with a 50/50 mix of Leather Brown and Bleached Bone
Afterwords Drybrush the sand with a 50/50 mix of Desert Yellow and Bleached Bone.

Drybrush the rocks with a 1/3 ratio of Leather Brown and Bleached Bone
Afterwords Drybrush the sand with a 1/3 ratio of Desert Yellow and Bleached Bone.

Lightly drybrush everything with 100% Bleached Bone. Once the paint is dry spray it with Matt varnish for a suitably dry and deserty finish.

You're done!

Congratulations everyone that took part and those that finished. I had far too much on to even take part. Apologies for general silence.

And congratulations to Fargo for the win.

All the entries looked great, so give yourselves a pat on the back.

And quoted from the vote thread to keep this all together...

...Having not run one of these before, can the veterans offer any advice (besides reading past entry rules, which I have done and will review)? I'm tempted to choose a topic that is very specific to a style and theme I want to see, but I realize constraints can sometimes be too restrictive on creativity, and might turn off potential participants who have no interest in said theme/style.I'm open to suggestions!

I'd like to get the new contest rolling soon, as in the next week or two.

Looking over the past contests will show you that they have developed and evolved over time. Some elements remain for every round, some things will only show up now and again or even just the once. They are the best resource for how to lay out the opening post at least.

As for beyond that, the way it's run, the theme, the rules, the winning conditions, and any prizes are all up to the person running it. You can individualise the round as much or as little as you want. Stick to the same general trends of previous rounds or create your own unusual concept, it's all good (obviously the only thing that really needs to stay is the "terrain building" element of the contest ). Be strict, be lenient. Remember it's all for fun (and rivets).

You can go it alone throughout, rope in help from within or without DDakka to help run or just to judge, it's up to you.

For the theme, feel free to post up your ideas in this thread and see what people think. Then you can see what's popular and adjust your idea or just ignore everyone and run as the dictator you may or may not have always wanted to be.

Sometimes restrictions can lead to amazing results and freedom can lead to boredom.

I'd suggest pick one major restriction and one major freedom: Such as...
You must build a *insert building here*, but you can use any material you like,
Or
You must use a *insert an object* to build with, but you can make anything you like.

Mix in some minor restrictions and some flavour/fluff, and you're golden.

Then bug everyone to join and plug the contest across the whole of DDakka.

Edit:
Oh, and well done Z-ray for running this round and nice pieces with interesting and useful tutorials.
