They're making hard to wait for a sale to pick up the Greeks.

Third and final gladiator for the new Helleniki starter set...

(Coolest of the lot, IMO - can't wait to see her card and sculpt once Gen Con gets fired up).

Sculpts:

Daphne and Phaedra front and center (with the rest of the Helleniki ludus).

Krios and Crassus, the new bear Titan/Beast.

The new Greeks look great IMO but I have to say, this is twice I've been wildly excited for a new Beast only to be TOTALLY let down. First it was Atrox the tiger, now this guy - the art for both has been absolutely amazing and the sculpts have been 100% mediocre (or worse). It's like whoever they're hiring isn't even using any reference material or something... I mean, this thing's upper body is more human than bear, and its face looks like the sculptor has never actually even seen a bear before (same as with Atrox, unfortunately).

As bad as the MIKH experience was from a delay standpoint, at least that MFer produced awesome sculpts: Leo, Septimus and Nero, Hroka and Caho-Ta, Otho, and Lupa are easily the best of the Arena Rex line.

Yeah, I love their early animals; this one's pretty weak.

Greeks aren't my thing, but well executed.

Well... its not as boring as the tiger at least. I can kind of see what they're going for, but I can't say I would have ever identified that as a bear. I quite like the rules on it, even if as a playable piece its kind of boring.

Family friends had a 9’ grizzly stuffed in their family room/entrance foyer. It was scary and intimidating to me even when I was 12. This bear isn’t less so, so much less so. It looks like they watched an old Hanna Barbarra cartoon and designed it off of that. Or the bears from Chuckee Cheese.

Okay, does anyone know what sort of bear that's supposed to be, because it doesn't look especially painted or sculpted like any bear I've seen, but I'm also from North America, so don't know if this is some kind or European bear or something?

It looks like some kind of gorrila/bearish/wolverine cross breed, but nothing European I am aware of.

It's pretty terrifying that they thought releasing that was a good idea, I say that as someone who owns pretty much all there stuff other than the Greeks.

Your last point is especially laughable and comical, because not only the 7th ed Valkyrie shown dumber things (like being able to throw the troopers without parachutes out of its hatches, no harm done) - Irbis

There are several species that the Romans killed off via over hunting for games. This looks like it's supposed to be an Atlas Bear which I think we only have images of via roman mosaics/art so the figure might be stylized to look how the Roman's depicted it.

My guess was that it was based on some kind of historical artwork or something. I know they like to inject some of the sense of the fantastical wonder these exotic beasts used to represent at the time. I don't love it, but I do appreciate thinking about what some of these things must have felt like to people with absolutely no concept of them. Hannibal's elephants stands out as one of the most real examples of humanity encountering monsters. I'm sure the descriptions the survivors brought back sounded like pure magic in those days.

Yep, they're context on what things looks like can be quite different due to not a lot of people seeing them up close. This is what the French though a Rhinoceros looked like in the 1500s.

That actually is quite close to what some of the Asian rhino species look like though. If you look at the artwork for Crassus, you can see a pretty traditional brown bear - I think it just looks like the sculptor didn't use any real references, but rather worked off their own idea of a bear.

I love that weird old rhino attempt.

The atlas bear is pretty interesting, but comparing the Crassus model to the game illustration Gomez posted shows... some incongruities. Which is a bit disappointing, since I've been looking for a nice bear model. Crassus looks more like a bear-like monster than a bear.

Here's one: La Meridiana Grizzly.

You can find it for about 20 euros shipped to the states. I'm just not sure on the scale - it's 54mm, and I saw somewhere it was listed as 80 mm tall, so I'm a little hesitant to pull the trigger as a game piece for Arena Rex, since it will be so much bigger than the other Beasts.

There's also Seenah from Guild Ball. She'll be a little tough to come by as she's no longer available as a solo model in metal, but there's quite a few out in the wild and the secondary market for the game is pretty strong.
Spoiler:

She's available as a resin version too, but only as a box with other models, and they're sold out nearly everywhere due to Steamforged having stock issues, but those seem to be resolving themselves now.

Love the greeks. I hope I get into this game someday.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Nothing against the guildball bear, but it isn't really on the Arena Rex level, IMHO. The grizzly would be better.

Borka 2 could work. The rider is a separate piece though you’d probably want to cut off his saddle and just paint the back cloth.
