The Rewards of Treachery: Dark Furies!
A few months ago
I asked reddit how people prefer RoT units to be presented. My own opinion was that it's best to take the original squad's models and simply repaint them in
AL colours so it's clear what the unit is intended to be.
However, the general opinion instead was the opposite, and they made some very convincing arguments. Seeing as the
AL don't literally "steal" units, but rather copy technology and tactics, it makes more sense for a ground-up
AL aesthetic with
WYSIWYG equipment.
So, after feeling like some Dark Furies would make a lot of thematic sense for my force, I set about collecting suitable parts. Invariably I turned to 3D prints from etsy; I am not averse to doing so for the occasional conversion parts, but I rarely go beyond that. Here, however, it felt appropriate, and this is a rare unit where it's actually mostly cobbled together from such printed parts.
The heads I got ended up comically small on these rather large bodies (I suspect the designer intended for them to match Primaris scale, I realised) so I dug up old, larger firstborn heads from my bitz box (mostly Raptors).
To really sell that these are
Dark Furies, not veterans or a command squad, I went for pauldrons of similar aesthetic, but later had the idea to paint them black to more strongly hint at their nature (black
is after all a colour the
AL use a great deal canonically). I experimented with a glossier black and while the unit ended up a bit messier than most I still think it looks decent.
What do you think?
