One piece of train track will eventually get some sticks of explosives to allow for a game related objective that could go BOOM during the game and be swapped out for the crater

I now have 14 straight pieces, which gives me enough to go all the way across my table, plus the crater.

With the new WQ coming up soon, I've become a bit... derailed... from the train track tiles and started to get motivated to start painting up some of my undead in preparation, but it is causing me some headaches... how to base them.

They all come with round bases, all of my currently finished undead have round bases... and I *like* round bases for dungeon crawlers which is where they will see most use and would like to give AoS a try at some point with the undead army I'll have slowly assembled for use in the various incarnations of WQ. *But* I feel like when the new WFB comes out I'll want to give that a go as I always wanted a proper Vampire Counts army to play with as there's just something nice about seeing a fully ranked army on the table. It seems like a waste of time rebasing everything, so I've been looking at the LotR style movement trays; you can see one I started for a unit of Dire wolves

I've been looking at 9th age, which looks pretty good and seems to have a nice community around it to help people get started. The only issue with that is it demands everything to be based on specific base sizes, most of which are just too small to fit a lot of the more recent releases onto, which makes the infantry movement trays I've printed far far too wide, which is annoying as all hell. I've not looked at KoW yet as I'm not a massive fan of anything Mantic have done other than The Walking Dead. I can't quite bring myself to buy the books to look in more depth, or see what the base sizes are for that.

So yeah, any thoughts or ideas here would be gratefully received before I start making movement trays for everything! At this point it's feeling like I'll be sticking to AoS size bases and dropping movement trays *booo!*

On the plus side, all of the new undead that was shown off at the weekend are glorious! I wasn't too keen on the new zombies in WQ, but the more vertical ones in the preview have changed my mind on all the roots. Having just printed 15 zombies from the Highlands Minis Patreon, I decided to do a little experiment with all those spare branches I have kicking around from the GW woods

Terrible photo, but they seem to work nicely

Oooh, you have been busy. Great movement options, and like those zombies. I've been working on sob ones but am increasingly thinking of just printing.

Kings of War is great and my main game. I played WHFB from 4E until it was killed, and KOW is such a better gaming experience - plus great community, fun hobbying thanks to multi-basing, model agnostic, etc. The basic rules are free, you just have to jump through Mantic's webstore hoops (https://www.manticgames.com/news/free-rules-now-available-for-kings-of-war-third-edition/). I could go on, but the relevant thing for you is that KOW uses set unit base sizes, not model base sizes. So like a cav regiment is 125mm x 100mm with somewhere between 6-10 models on that - they aren't removed individually, the regiment is the game piece and fights as one until removed. Given the large size of AOS minis (especially infantry), it can be tough to make modular trays with 'enough' models to play both games, but it's doable and, ultimately, the community is lot less anal than people tend to think.

Anyway, if you want to know more about KOW, happy to extol its virtues. That modular base there looks great and totally fits the bill, assuming it's the proper dimensions.

A bit of digging this morning and Kings of War seems to be getting favourable reviews as a quick to play, fun R&F game that isn't quite so restricting in basing methodologies. It seems to be defined by a set footprint for the unit as it uses multibasing instead of the removable figures like WFB/9th Age. Each base has a minimum, recommended and list amounts for figures that can go onto the bases, so a unit of 10 infantry has a recommended minimum count of 7; which works out nicely as a LotR style movement tray will take 8 25mm round bases. It does say dice are used for *something* alongside the bases, so I could go for 7 figures plus a scenic dice/status holder in one of the places

KoW doesn't touch all of the undead that I'll end up with, but will support quite a lot of them, so that seems like a reasonable approach to take for basing and if I ever get to leave the house again I might go see if our local gaming group will teach me how to play and get me actually playing *something* against a real opponent! If I never play KoW, all I've wasted is a bit of time making some nice display stands that can go onto my shelving units and make the storage look prettier

Thanks for the feedback, it's always good to get someone else's feedback on these things. It seems the base above is 111mm wide at the base as it flares out a bit with the lip, which seems to make it too wide going by those numbers. Looks like I need to consider making a new tray stl for this after all, not that I'm all that likely to ever go to a tournament... so it may be fine for friendly play.

You use dice (typically a few D6 or one D20) to mark damage on a unit, folks who print their own trays typically do make a little offset thing to hold the dice steady, tho it's pretty cool when they're worked into the tray itself

Do you mean 111mm deep? A deeper flank is really just to your detriment (easier to get flanked!), as is a wider front (harder to fit in spaces, more enemy units can multi-charge your front). KOW actually has a rule for 'exceptional base size' usually used for monsters on too big of a base. Personally? I would always stick to the proscribed base sizes as the game is built around them, but you can certainly go a little larger as needed.

Good luck with the game, it really is a lot of fun. With the weather change here in NE USA, I suppose I've got my own KOW to look forward to

Sadly the frontage on that one is 111mm as each base is 25mm wide, plus a little bit between each, plus the edges. I've only made one of those, so it's not a massive deal to redo or just have one thing that is too wide.

Ugh, it's been a while since the last update... quite a while looking back at the dates. Work has been a bit crazy recently, but thankfully it has calmed down again so you might start to get some more regular written updates again!

Thanks to a new gaming shop opening up near us a few weeks back, I managed to snag one of their small delivery of the new Warhammer Quest. I've still not managed to play yet, but I've assembled all of the figures and made city bases for them all.

There's not been a massive amount of painting happening recently as I had to run all the meetings, rather than just listen but evenings have led to me assembling all of the undead bits and pieces I seem to have collected. Turns out I have quite a respectable little force spread across the various armies of Nagash, especially Flesh Eater Court. Again, more photos later

The photos that you *do* get today are a pack of undead wolves from the Highland Miniatures Patreon on a movement tray. Don't think I'll be doing more movement trays though as getting the sizing to fit AoS size bases and one of the R&F game systems was turning into a pain

The wolves are really nice models, though the bone wolves are more than a bit delicate.

The Ender has been endlessly printing hex bases and tiles for the gaming table, so I've been able to put away all of the grassland foam tiles and retain a 4x4 ft gaming area. Next up is to look at printing some new buildings that are of a larger scale than the 4Ground houses currently on there. I did manage to pick up a nice ruined tower (I forget where from though...). This looks really nice settled amongst the dark woods

I'll take a picture of the table in it's glory tomorrow when there's some light. Some of the grasslands tiles still need painting/flocking, but that's not a massive task.

I forgot to mention that I've also finished making all of the railroad tiles, but those are also only half painted... once the current batch of zombies are painted, I'll go back and finish the table pieces while I plan out the next expansion to it.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
As requested, some updates on the table. Lets start with the tower form yesterday settled into the table, being assaulted by some undead

and zooming out...

In this photo you can see a lot of empty gaps that need filling or finishing to make it a fully playable table, but I have a stack of about 50 hexes to finish. Most of these will be plain grass allowing me to open things up a bit, or extend to a 6x4 once I've printed a load more hex bases. The intent is to have the 4x4 setup be purely printed hexes and not the foam ones so things can be swapped around more easily. Rearranging the foam hexes can be a pain to pull out. (You can also see around the edges that I took delivery of the Middara KS last week and Zombicide 2nd Edition a couple of days back. Probably separate posts on those later!)

As you can see from this sample, the table base is made up of lots of empty hex risers and thin plates that drop on top, which makes rearranging things so much easier. I may start sticking some of the risers together to speed up putting a layout together if I take this anywhere, but for now it is just living on my table so it doesn't really matter. The intention is to eventually change all of the foam mounted pieces left onto plates instead. This is basically the trees, houses and graveyard

It is using up a lot of filament making these though... so it's a lot more expensive than the foam one, at least it is to set up the base hexes as you need so many of them; after that it's cheap creating the top plates though.

Speaking of top plates, I realised that there were some additions that I've not posted. What table would be complete without a pit of skulls?

One of the aims for this new version of the table is to scale everything up a bit as the 4Ground buildings are pretty small. The first thing to be scaled up was the stone circle that I'd made for the foam layout. Still needs finishing....

Last, but by no means least, is the entry for the LoER Dangerous Terrain builder thingy... there are still 9 more pieces of track to paint up, but at least some of it has been done

And here it is after some sod has blown a big hole in it

Looks like I got Comment edited yesterday, so this didn't get a bump. Thankfully there is some more stuff to talk about today

10 more grassland tiles were done yesterday thanks to watching an Adobe conference presentation... so some more of those gaps are now filled in.

A while back I picked up a Flesh Eater start collecting set for dirt cheap that had already been built, but not completely painted. The Terrorgeist is painted quite nicely, though some touchups are needed in places, but the base was empty. Given tht I don't need the Garden of Morr walls any more, I decided a nice scenic base was called for here so there was something for the Terrorgeist to climb over

I think I may sacrifice a couple of the ghouls to the base as well, running alongside it to add a bit of story to the mixture.

I seem to have about 1800 points of Flesh Eater Court, 2400 points of Nighthaunt and about 1200 of Vampires without trying... not bad for someone who doesn't play AoS. Still, that gives plenty of options to do undead based adventures when Dungeon Universalis turns up. I suspect I'll start writing either a new setting that is effectively Ravenloft, or writing adventures that take place in the Warhammer Old World.

Currently trying to work out if I start building my necromunda scenery in hex based elements as well, but that's going to require some very careful planning to line up the walls as they don't really fit on one tile neatly. I suspect these are going to need to be multiple hexes together to form small set pieces that can link up (or not), which would also allow for more spacing between areas for less terrain heavy games.

Current theorising is that the necromunda board sections may well be by a breach to the ash wastes so that the ground can be sand, making it less of a problem tying things together. This would then allow for some transition tiles to go from grass to sand and eventually water, for beaches for fantasy or pulp games.

Anyway... there's lots left to do on this setup for fantasy/pulp games first!

eep. I just did the sums and in total I've got just over 7000 points of undead for AoS across Nighthaunt, Legions of Nagash and Flesh Eater Court... and that's before some of the nice shiny new bits come out with the Vamps book... :O

So I've put some paint onto a few test zombies... and I'm not sure. They seem to be too bright...

The skelebobs that were a few pages back have the same issue in that their clothes are too rich/clean looking despite trying to weather than down a bit. The ghouls I think I have a recipe for the skin already, so they will probably be ok in mostly sepia/pale skin and no real bright colours.

I've seen a few really great examples of people doing desaturated/greyscale+spot colour for the Cursed city figures and it looks fantastic, which has let to me wondering if the core units that will be blocks, like skeletons and zombies are in greyscale with some small bit of colour; non-line units start to increase the coloured area with HQ being far more colour (though still sticking to the muted palette). I think I need to stop with the coloured zombies as they are tooooo bright and try a greyscale one

There are some great tutorials on a nice style on https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqix-U30FNj-oTd5A4RHlpg

I'll try a desaturated/B&W one and see what it looks like. At the moment the very green skin and the bright colours that contrast paint is providing is putting me off them a bit. Too cheerful for an undead army

Next you'll be suggesting that I do goblin green grass and base trims for that *real* classic WD feel!

So yesterday's Vampire announcement was quite nice. Some fantastic new vamps to go with the Cursed City russian theme, some really nice new wolves and some slightly odd demi-vamps.

It did make me realise that my wolves are based incorrectly, so I need to create some new bases and carefully remove the very delicate skeletal wolves from their bases...

Speaking of wolves, someone on faceybook came up with the idea of using the Thunderwolf cavalry as the base for some Vyrkos Blood Knights. Given that I'm loving the Vyrkos aesthetic and character models, I'm liking this concept, but not so much the cost of buying Blood Knights *and* Thunderwolf cavalry to do it. Given that I'm unlikely to ever play at a GW event/shop I've spent the evening playing with my stl library and came up with this as a test piece

He's getting there. The last piece is working out how to make the fur trim to go around the hat, or an ushanka... if you've seen something somewhere on an stl... please shout!

The rider and saddle/cloth is from Titan forge, with the wolf from Highland Minis (scaled up by 50%) and some hussar wings from thingiverse. Once the fur trim is sorted, I'll run a test print on this and see what he looks like on a cavalry base next to some Black Knight. I suspect I may want to scale it all up a bit more as the GW vamps are a lot bigger than everything else now

Oh good call, I have Reptilian Overlord's not-Valhallans around somewhere. I know they have furry hats, I just can't remember if the fur trim goes all the way around, or if it is just the furry front... pretty sure they have a wolf skull motif on them too

Another conversion I saw on t'interwebz was adding some wings to the Hobbit Goblin Town boss. Given that I had the base model and loads of spare bits kicking around I thought I'd give it a try and expand it a little further.

The Goblin king becomes a great Ghoul Archregent. Not quite as fit as the sleek killer official model, but showcases the reality behind that fat, jolly king that he thinks he is

Attilan Rough Riders! Those are the guard heads you want, if you're looking for a ring of fur around a helmet. Super quick googlin' turned up at least one (https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/warriors-of-the-steppes) ...

You, my friend, are a star, thank you!

Turns out those models are massive and kill Blender if I try and crop out just the hat. Thankfully I found just the hat on Thingiverse by searching for bearskin of all things!

With that now in place, I've got all the parts needed to pull together the rest of the unit by scaling up a lance from another one of Titan Forge's sets...

Tomorrow I need to export the various pieces and support them all to run a test print...
