This didn't seem to fit anywhere, so I posted here where I figured it would get the most exposure.

I am getting ready for a vacation to the UK, southern England specifically, including London.  Are there any "must see" spots from a GW/40K perspective in this area?  Any GW "tourism" to consider?

Thanks!

CE

being an american who has spent 18months in the uk. london is pretty lame there are a few gw stores but they are just like the stores in the states. one store actually had a few bits like lightning claw arms. you need to get up to nottingham to warhammer world but that also is a kind of a let down. i have played in a few tourneys there but it would be cooler if they had a manufactoring tour. you can alos get forgeworld on the cheap the only way a non employee can get a discount. you just need to ask for a vat receipt. you get like 10% back.  by american standards the drive up to nottingham is short only a couple of hours

If this is your first trip, don't worry too much about GW stores. I think London is a great city and there is a lot to do. I stopped in a few GW stores there and they are pretty much the same as in the US. The only unique items are some of the collectors guides that don't appear to be available in the US. I wasn't able to go to Nottingham so I can't comment on that.

There is a lot to do in the UK and I thought everyone there was pretty friendly, I'd keep GW low on the list and save it for a rainy day (on second thought don't save it for a rainy day...it is London so it will most likely be raining most of the time).

The Imperial War Museum in south London is great trip, lots of tanks, planes, artifacts and history there.

Westminster Abby is also the clear inspriation for 40k gothic architecture. The whole place is tomb of the great heroes of the british empire and most are so over done with weeping angels and prostrate roman gods that you can imagine you're in the imperium. Just add skulls.

So I'd look for real world stuff that inspired 40k more than 40k stuff.

Yeah, your best bet for GW tourism is Warhammer World, but check the web site beacuse they somtimes close it for events. Go by train, it'll take about an hour or so but much of Nottingham is a bit "run down", however give the castle a look around as there is a special show of GW artwork at the gallery there.

You'll probbably find your time beter spent taking in London, its a fantastic place for a visit, more museums than you can shake a stick at, nightlife everywhere you look, loads of intresting little nooks and crannies. If you have the time take in Westminster, its a nice tour, but it is alittle older than the British empire, there are Saxon Kings buried there IIRC, so thats about 1000 or so years ago (apparently it was the largest roofed structure in europe at one time). Soho is a fun jaunt but be careful about which clubs you go into

If you have any friends-of-friends or such at the UK HQ (even in sales etc), now is the time to pull those strings. Warhammer world in and of itself is pretty much just a little store with a huge gaming room and a little extra nicely painted minis in the cabinets.. but if you get to go behind the closed doors, it can be a pretty cool experience. Same with Bugman's Bar - it's a bloody expensive pub with bad beer.. but if you get in there for the post-gamesday party, you might get to see Jes Goodwin singing karaoke

Oh, and are you going there on your own? While we were trekking across the UK, we figured out that we not only saved stupendous amounts of travelling time, but also a nice bit of cash on splitting long-fare cab 3 ways instead of taking the train.

If you get the time, you could do a lot worse than driving west along the M4 to visit bristol and the surrounding area (check a map to see where it is.) They have I K Brunells SS Great Britain ( an iron hulled, steam powered liner that was used on the transatlantic route and has just had its full restoration completed) that has just won 3 national museum awards and in line for a 4th. great museums, Britains largest private collection of helicopters is in Weston, including a Mil-Mi 24 Hind gunship (man, that thing is huge!) Basically if you co into almost any large shop in bristol, you can find flyers for days out in the surrounding area. If you are into tanks, you could do a lot worse than going down to bovington on the south coast. It started life as the home of the british armies tank corp, and is still a working army base, but has an enourmous tank museum, charting everything from WW1 to the present day. It is worth checking with them before you visait though because you really do not want to miss the driving displays. (I think their Tiger1 is roadworthy now!)

Best of luck. I hope you enjoy your visit

The drinking halls of Fenris or South London as its sometimes called

dont waste your time with the GW stores. if you are in central london and really want to check out the store there. dont go to soho to late as you can get lost in the back streets and just get harrased by dealers.

I went there and was fortunate enough to be able to sit in one of the Knights of the Bath's seats because it had my name on it INCLUDING my middle initial!

I would say if you want to see something related to Warhammer go to the Warhammer Museum.  They have all the diarammas (sp?) such as the Battle of Big Toof River and the Battle at the Emperor's Palace- Angron looked pretty mean with the two juggernauts on leashes and so did Khan riding into battle on top of his personal rhino with command.  That and you'll also be able to grab a drink at Bugman's Brewery

Thanks for all the replies.

My trip is already planned, with 3 days in London, the rest in the south and south east.  I was curious for any possible "must see" targets of opportunities.  I will travelling with wife and three kids so anything too over the top will not fly.  The Warhammer museum sounds interesting.  Where is that?

Again, thanks for the replies!

if you go to Brighton there's a cool antique weapon shop in the lanes. It's down the street from the GW store.
