So who won what?

I heard a very tame Empire list won fantasy.

I don't know who won it, but I was present at the Games Day and this year they let people from Games Day walk around the GT area, big mistake!  I was able to catch out of the corner of my eye a little kid with what could have only been sloppy joe meat on his hand make an open-palmed lunge for a Forgeworld blood thirster model amidst the girlish shrieks of the owner.

I was interested in the 40K GT, and came across a guy from the local gaming group participating in it.  Over lunch we talked and there were a few concerns raised:

Are armored companies legal now?  I can't track down the 2006 US rules, but there was an armored company present and I heard it did quite well in victory point accumulation.

There were a lot of droppod armies there, with droppods ranging in size from spray-painted coke cans to 72oz BigGulps, depending on how much LOS the owner wanted to block.  I feel that some size guidelines are really in order for droppod models.

A few players had printed out the .pdf FAQs from the US site before they were pulled.  The guy I was talking to, who played Tau, was told he couldn't scout with his devilfish by an opponent, who then went on to shoot Tyranid warriors with lascannons in another game and insist they were instant kills.  I don't know whether the FAQs were officially used at the tournament though, or whether it was just that one guy.

Shaun Kemp (sp?) with Word Bearers earned first with 97/100 general scores and probably full paint/comp.
I took 2nd with Zilla nids and 94/100 general pts.
Sam Hainn Eldar (list looked more like a typical mech-biel-tan) took 3rd with 94/100 on a tie break I guess?

I don't have the exact specs, but Shaun's list was something like:
Dark Apostle
Lieutenant

2 or 3 oblits

3 or so Lascannon tac squads
4 x 6 Daemonette
2 x 8? Furies

Pred autocannon, 2 x HB

This can't be complete since that's only about 1300 points, so I'm likely missing something major. Any help?

My list for zilla nids:
Flying Tyrant, 2 x devourer shooty, 2+ save
Walking tyrant, venom cannon, devourer shooty, 2+ save
3 x Elite Fex, 2 x devourer shooty
2 x 8 spinegaunt
2 x 6 genestealers, 4+ save
1 x 4 ravenor
2 x 2 ravenor
2 x heavy carnifex, venom cannon, barbed S, shooty
3 x zoanthrope, scream, warp blast

I'm still decompressing but I'll likely post some bat-reps later.

I'm pretty sure Armored Companies have been legal for quite some time. The new Marine dex might have obliterated all the marine CA armies, but I was under the impression that the AC was still alive and kicking.

Wow. That list actually looks quite well-rounded. 2 units of heavy cav, a big block of infantry with two supporting units, some fast cav, artillery, a tar pit, and some march blockers.

I have an friend that uses CDs to mount his drop pods (Imperial termites half burrowed up from the ground).  It is very annoying that you can't see a dreads hidden behind them.  I never complained, but technically, vehicles doen't even have bases.  I probably should have at least said no when two of the 6 Drop pods were just the CD with nothing on it.

I've seen the Reaper Exarch with both weapon options and both look like things you can buy in sex shops. A weapon should not look like this, not even a Emperor's Children weapon. -Symbio Joe

You can mount your pods on 2'X2' bases, and you can still see a dread behind them if you don't build your actual pods that big. I'm still amazed people let that "trick" get pulled on them.

To be fair the Tyranid Codex does says that being in Synapse protects against insta-kills from "double" the target's Toughness and not "double or more".  So, thinking that a lascannon can insta-kill a Warrior is not an unreasonable conclusion even without a FAQ (although I wish this was clear either way since I've seen both interpretations used).

Figured I'd post the exact list. Went with this as there weren't many comp restrictions

Dark Apostle, speed, strength
LT speed
3 oblits
6 possessed (naked)
4x6 man chaos marine squads w/ lascannon & bolters
6 man chaos marine squad w/ bolters & infiltrate
4x6 deamonette squads
2x6 fury squads
2 auto/hvy bolter preds.

Matches were Aliatoic rangers w/ 3 falcons; big nids w/ many gaunts; generic chaos; night lords; tau. Had some good luck in a couple of those games. Pairings, missions, tables and my opponents dice were greatly in my favor. Deamonettes are the bomb (litterally)

Hey Moz, I tried to send you a private message on your clubs board. Want to set up a time to get a game in for fun? It would be interesting to see if I actually deserve the win You know how to reach me.

The Night Lords that Shaun beat were mine...crushed my dreams of a GT win.

Great game though...I almost managed to kill off his icons before the bulk of his daemons came in. The dice gods were crapping on his summoning rolls, and only two packs of daemons came in on turn 2. The odds righted themselves in turn 3, as I missed, failed to wound, or he made invulnerable saves on an inordinate number of plasma gun and heavy weapons shots that were trying to kill off his last icon. Then he got a 12" scatter directly towards my 370 point squad of Chosen with a squad of daemonettes. Went into point denial at that point, but it was too little too late. I guess I can take some measure of pride in being the only opponent that Shaun didn't wipe off the table with a massacre.

3rd Place went to Greg Sparks of Saim Heinous fame (Inq. Malice here on Dakka).

General thoughts:
1) Way too many lava tables. Made it really hard for me to use my Chosen bikers. Funny thing was, I played 3 games on lava tables, and in all three games, my 370-point chosen bikers survived. The two I played on non-lava tables saw them destroyed.
2) Random levels...I kinda liked it. Ended up playing 3 omega and 2 gamma.
3) Missions - sucked. Only word for it. Rolling for missions was simply dumb. I ended up playing 3 cleanses and 2 Seek and Destroys.
4) Codex Spread - Excellent. Walking around the hall, I thought the distribution of armies was decent. I ended up playing against Daemonhunters, Ultramarines, Tau, Word Bearers, and Necrons. Nice.

Well congrats Shaun, I knew one of DaBoys would take the trophy home. How did the DA and Ravenguard guys do? A couple things I thought about were:

1. Just like Centurian99 said, wayyy to many lava tables. I played three games on lava tables, and it lead my entire Ork army to foot slogging in difficult terrian. In addition to that they were terrible to balance models on :/.

2. Random levels... suck. In the two games I did play in escalation, the first screwed my foe up terribly, and the second pushed me towards getting massacared. Escaltion provided a large benefit for armies that drop podded or were all infantry.

3. GW needs to put a limit on the drop pod sizes. I felt bad for the people that had to play against the guy with the 4 inch radius drop pods.

4. The two big fad armies were: big creature nids of shooty death and drop pod SM's.

5. Lots of Orks. I counted at least 4 other Orks, plus the Ork w/ IG rules army. Waaagh!

Who won the players choice?

It's an IG army that's using heavily converted ork models for most IG units - Very cool army.

The Ork-IG army was played by a friend of mine from Nashville; I believe his army was featured in a WD some time ago.

Anyway a group of us from Nashville went to the GT....I brought my Saim-Hann Wildriders as an emergency back-up since I could not get my Emperor's Children army ready in time.

My first day was disastrous as the comp of my army is very...forgiving. I had two squads of bikes, a squadron of Vypers, 10-Fire Dragons mounted in a Wave Serpent, 9-Storm Guardians with Warlock mounted in a Wave Serpent, a Falcon Gunship, a four-man ranger squad and a Farseer mounted on a Jet Bike.

I matched up against a 13th Wolf Company player that ran three squads of 12-man wolf units backed by two squads of 15-man wulfen units, 2 long fang packs, a rune priest and a lord. His army was shockingly fast, even when playing on the Lava Board. Actually, it appeared he was faster than me all of the time as he was able to down two Vypers in hth in sucessive turns. He bled into my deployment zone quickly and I was forced to anchor there and deal with him. Needless to say, he won very convincingly.

Second game had me pitted against a Warp Spider amry, which I thought would be a very decent match-up. However, this kid was not rolling for difficult terrain on the Lava Board, in which I explained to him that his troops were Jum-pAck troops and they had to. He continued to argue the point, so I let it go, not wanting to get bogged down when we could be playing instead. His rapid-firing Strength 6 shots killed me to a man in turn 4 and he was very fortunate to down my vehicles that way.

3rd game had me pitted against a friend of mine who was massacred his first two games as well. He had a Emperor's Children army that was converted from Sister of Battle figs. It was a Cleanse mission that had his forces anchored in the difficult terrain, boxing me in so-to-speak. Guess that's what deploying first will do to you...however, by turn 3 I knew it was over as I could not dislodge his troops from the area terrain and I just went for VPs. I lost that one badly as well.

The second day fared much better as I was matched up against Tau on my fourth Lava Board of the tourney. We had a very good game for a Take and Hold mission and it came down to a draw. I decided to change my tactics a bit and it appeared to pay off.

Last game had me matched up against Necrons on a woods board....finally! We played a Take and Hold mission, but the player was a bit new to the necrons and to the rules, so I did offer to help him along without taking advantage of him. He did well, but I managed to phase him out on turn 5. I offered that he might have wanted to drop his C'Tan and destroyers and go with more Warriors...but he was thinking og going with guard next time.

The GT was an interesting one to say the least and the armies were very diverse; I saw a few other Saim-Hann eldar and I took some notes on their comps as well. Appears I'll have to go with more Vypers until the bikes become cheaper in the next codex.

Other interesting notes;

1. There was only awards for 1st through 3rd place and best army...which appeared to be a players choice thing.

2. Didn't mind rolling for the mission or the level; it was either gamma or omega.

3. Good bit of varying sized drop pods in soem of those drop-pod armies. Might need some sort of univeral rule on that for LOS purposes.

4. Too many Lava Boards; I played on 5 of them throughout the tourney.

Overall, an interesting GT...to say the least.

The Ork IG army was defiantly cool looking.  I also liked the Kroot army.

As for the guy with the 4" drop pods what pissed me off was that I had made drop pods and made sure i kept them at least close in size to the FW models, and used as many GW parts as i could.  Then that guy shows up and plays his 4" drop pods and plays against a GW staff guy first round who apparently saw nothing wrong with his over-sized, and containing no GW parts drop pods.  If they are not going to follow there own rules packets for the tournaments why write one at all.

Yes the lava tables sucked, but to a degree is was a good counter to all the people playing infantry heavy armies to get around the problems with Omega.

Yeah, I saw those huge drop pods that one guy had; it did look like Big Gulp buckets which i thought was very...unsporting to a degree.

The Lava Boards I didn't mind, but it appeared with the armies I faced, they did nothing to hinder the infantry I faced with the exception of one player. The Warp Spider player chose to ignore the difficult terrain entirely and the 13th Wold Player was actually rolling 3 dice for his wolf units in additon to his fleet-of-foot roll, which made difficult terrain a non-issue for him.

Only in my Tau game and Emperor's Children matchup did the terrain present a decent obstacle to infantry....

Um, correct me if I'm wrong, but the forgeworld drop pods are 4" across, aren't they?

Shaun: Great job.

The 13th company Wolves lost to a shooty Word Bearers army. The forgeworld dreadnought drop pod is very large, 4-5" across if I remember correctly. The troop pods are about 3" across. In no way should CD bases be under them and the CD does not block LOS.

Remember that the GT staff are volunteers from all of Gamesday who, for the most part, did not know their assignments until the morning of. They are not interested in strict rules interpretation, just moving the games along and avioding the most controversies.

We get spoiled a little by Adepticon which publishes it's own faq and scratch built guidelines for players ahead of time. They put together 12-14 unique and challenging scenarios, over 3 days, that run the gambit of rules and provide over 1400 pieces of terrain to make 70+ unique and individual boards for the 40k universe. It really is everything any gamer ever wanted the GT to be, run by gamers for gamers.

Ed,

I went 3 and 2

My first game I won Vs. and Eldar Ranger army
My second game I won Vs. a Dark Eldar army

My Third Game however... hehehe I was defeated by a Blood Angel army. His army consisted of a Chappy with JP, a real sick Sanguinary Highpriest with the Grail on a bike and some lightning claws and a Narth and Reductor, 5 Scout Squads with Vets with some having powerfists, 1 small las/plas sqd, a Scout bike sqd., 10 assault marines, 2 5 man dev squads, and an Inquisitor (I guess to fill points).

He rolled a sizable Death Co. He got to choose the mission and chose Take and Hold, he got first turn and moved center to Castle up on the objective. This combined with sub-par reserve rolls, and me making a tactical error with choosing which side to attack cost me the game. He was a good player with a hard list and I got out played.

Game 4 I won against Tau

and in Game five I Lost to an Eldar army with a Farseer with a Warlock Retinue with a bunch of Signing spears and bikes, 3 guardians squads, NINE vipers, 2 Falcons, a Wraith Lord and an Avatar.
Another tough army with a good player. He castled up in a corner, did a good job protecting his vipers. Then punched out leading with his Avatar, Wraith Lord and Farseer with Ret. to tie up my units. He was then able to manuever his Vipers and pick off my Packs.

I found the competition to be very good out there, and having had the honor of facing you, Ed, on many occasions... I would dare say that game-play wise they are on par with your skill level. (meaning those players I lost too)

Some of the factors: 1. Lava boards hurt my bike units, 4 outta 5 of my games where on Lava. That really hurt thier abilities.
2. I need to know the other army lists better, this hurt me in terms of Target selection, and Pod Placement in both the games I played (in other words I gotta get out more)
3. the Games I lost were against players who knew how to face Pods. This combined with #2 allowed them to capitalize on my mistakes.

Over all a great weekend, and alot of lessons learned...
