Well, it's really slowed down as of late. Kind of preoccupied with orks and such. That's OK though, just recharging my creative batteries for the next round with the Mantis Warriors! New BatRep up for my orks if you're interested... http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/457061.page#4433510

Hey guys! Just checking in. No new marines, sorry. Still on hiatus. Completed my third grot tank though. If you're curious to see it and the whole squadron together... here's the link: Forge World grot tank squadron (rokkit buggies).
Painting gretchin is very therapeutic, I highly recommend it!

Also, ironic that your hiatus involves painting green and yellow....

Gits, I'm going to threadjack here a moment, to highlight what I think is an incredible opportunity.
This person is making Greatcoat-style IG replacements. Cast in white metal, pre-order until July 1st. The pre-order price is $25 ($2.50 a figure) afterwards it'll be $30 for 10. Heads WILL be available separately as well. If you read the full thread, you'll see how the sculptor responded well to the Dakka community, and ended up with a seriously good, and affordable, multi-part greatcoat mini with options.
Check 'em out!

Gits, you may officially spank me for the threadjacking.

Been a while and I thought I'd check in. I appreciate everyone's patience while I take a break from my marines. The "break from painting" didn't last too long... guess I'm in the habit so it's hard to set down... but it is nice to be working on things that are totally different from my usual. Been having great fun being super anal about the gretchin figures I've been painting. The third grot tank and now a Killa Kan made from a 1st Edition ork dreadnought (which looks nearly exactly like a metal kan figure). Have taught myself how to do checkboard patterns. You can find my tutorial here if you're interested: How to paint Checkerboards Funny thing is I wanted the break, in part to work on things that were less stressful... closer to tabletop standard so I just just relax and make progress on my long neglected orks and new Circle Orborus (sp?) forces... but if anything I've gotten more strict about my painting discipline. Haven't figured that one out yet. I'm not painting as much as I used to though... which I think is a good thing over-all. Have been getting some (still 5th edition) games in at a relatively new FLGS one town over. Nice to help out a new store, lots of young guys just getting going in the game. I'm slowly absorbing 6th and it's impacts on the game. I'm afraid a pretty good nerf bat has been taken to the orks... but I seem to be alone in that assessment so we'll see. A number of units got decidedly better... but the overall game rules got much less favorable in my opinion. Luckily, most of the grot things that I've been working on have survived the change-over in pretty good shape. BA mech got worse, but they were pretty good to start with and their assault marines got a boost... so that's a wash more-or-less, perhaps a slight negative. Codex Marines seem fine. New fliers, scouts are better, bikes are better, bolters are better. There are some negatives of course but since most of the negatives affect everybody they shouldn't be an issue. So... life in 6th edition goes on. I hope to have a chance to do some more reading this weekend and maybe get a small game or two in to practice some of the basics. I will get back to working on the LoTD model. Probably as soon as I finish the kan I'm working on. It's frustrating but I'm just not one of those guys who can jump from project to project. I need to pound away on something until it's done and I can move on to the next. Every once in a while I can jump around... but I usually have trouble keeping my focus when I do that which is much less satisfying. I wish you all the best. To my brother and sister Americans, happy Independence Day! Say cool and keep hydrated. (for those of you over-seas, most of the US is locked in a huge heat-wave & drought... here in Wisconsin, we're looking at 4 days in a row over 100 degrees F with high humidity to boot, and we're in the northern-most tier of states so its worse to the south). Today... because of the high heat and complete fire ban across the southern part of the state... I think I'll stay inside, paint & watch Godzilla movies. Wooo-hooo! Best, Gits

"Colonial Separation Day" I love it! I was actually trying to come up with something clever to say to all my UK friends in honor of the event... but everything I came up with just sounded bad. Happy "Thank God we got rid of that mess." Day?? Happy "You were proving to be more trouble than you were worth so we didn't try all that hard to keep you." Day? Happy "You were lucky we were at war with the French at the time." Day? Happy "Stop using the white "X" on our uniforms as an aiming target." Day?

Little treat for you.
I picked up one of the servo skull tape measures GW started making. Mine works fine and seems very solid. Anyway, I could see getting it confused with everyone else's so I did a little custom painting. I could paint more of course but I didn't want to go overboard with it.

I don't see why everyone is nerdraging about the thing, it looks fine to me. I think people are just trying too hard to make it into something it is not. Why do people think because GW makes a product that they MUST use that product? It's a damn novelty item, that is all. It's liek the stupid stippling brush..the only thing it is good for is cleaning an airbrush nozzle....And it is REALLY good at that.

Yeah, this and the new templates too. I bought them with the intention of cutting them up and using the bitz and/or pressmolding the little arches, people got all militant butt-hurt about them having a little cheater triangle or some such complaint. I dunno.

I like the skull! I did not buy one because it seemed too much like a toy that you would get in a McDonalds kid's meal. Maybe I should have got one andI was mistaken.

I see them as sort of a limited run novelty thing. I like the tape measure myself, If I see one, I will most likely pick it up for the novelty of it, but in a game, I'll just use my simple hardware-store type tape measure and my plain old plastic templates.
