It's been established that the director for this movie doesn't know anything about Resident Evil and that this is likely just an original movie script he was pitching and was willing to have it attached to an existing IP as long as he was able to keep its story/plot in some capacity. So I'm not surprised to see that there are some things that look very out of place, like the "fat" Mr. X in the trailer.
I understood the opposite was true and he grew up with the games. And after having discussed it, it seems like this may be an "Outbreak" style movie. Still taking place in Raccoon City during 2, but focusing on an unnamed survivor rather than the usual cast.

That was my impression - it's a regular guy just surviving in the outbreak of horror. Not a military trained operative or a gene-enhanced warrior - just some dude in the wrong place at the wrong time in a hellish situation that gets worse and worse.

To be fair he said that they were going to explore other monsters than zombies; so there's good hope there for lickers/nemesis or other iconic beasties
Watching on a first generation IPad, as Nolan intended.
Also, looks to be leaning into the mythological creatures and elements, which is awesome, though I’m still not sure if I dig this whole thing.

I'm up for it but only because Ray Harryhausen's last film - after Clash of the Titans - was intended to be Force of the Trojans, featuring Scylla and Charybdis. This will have to do...
I must say that Scylla was rather scary in the 1997 Hallmark miniseries, with Armand Assante.

Somehow I just can't get behind the casting or costuming. Every decision seems like the absolutely wrong one. It doesn't even look like a Sword and Sandal film. It looks like a generically nondescript fantasy universe where everything is a random mishmash of motifs.
It looks like a grim and joyless generic fantasy world. I can’t put my finger on it, but something about the cinematography or editing is making all the “epic” shots fall flat for me. The little epilogue with the cyclops in the dark was less “oh gak” than “oh that’s supposed to be tense”.

The premise has been done in two Takes from the Crypt episodes, a Buffy episode, and the climax of Love Potion Nunber 9, but maybe there’s room for one more.
