I have read their mini codex only briefly, but found one big drawback - they don't have AT weapons. Their HQ can take some meltas, cool, but 2 units max. Then there is krootox, but his gun is only S 7. Apart from that, what can they use against tanks? What about a monolith? Get close enough for a meltagun and you are chewed to pieces by its guns.

You just forget about the monolith and kill the warriors and phase them out.

yup, as a stand along army they've got a lot of weaknesses. The monolith in particular is almost unblowupable. I wrote a tactica for 3rd edition but a lot of it still holds. http://www.warmongerclub.com/articles/kroot/kroot1.html

Antitank they have....sort of, course a smart opponent never actaully has to let those evicerators within the tanks range....EVER which is a problem.
That said the main problem is skimmers, kroot mercs have nothing really to take down skimmers.
I was long looking for a way to play kroot mercs but in the end I decided the best thing to do was to ally them with another race, DE and Chaos being my favourites, I went with chaos myself.
You can find my armylist in the armylists secion, labeled alpha legion with kroot or something. Though it might be awhile before the army is built so not sure when I get my first games in with that list. Atleast the list is done.

Not to mention the 6-6-6 roll required to destroy a monolith with an eviscerator. Even the only other weapon in the Kroot Merc list capable of destroying a monolith, the meltagun, requires a 4-6-6 roll. Both of these weapons require you to get close to the monolith, which is happy blowing away 20 Kroot a turn with its gauss weapons. Boo Necron Monolith. Hooray Beer! - Oaka

That's why I say the way to go is something like IG with maxed out kroot. Model the IG as slaves and you have a theme army that might someday win a battle.

Or, if you go with Forgeworld items, you can have great knarlocks that fleet of foot. throw in Angor prok to let them rerole their to-hit roles. These are better in a kroot army than a tau army as the krrot army special rules state that all kroot models infiltrate.
