Ok everyone. Here it is.

Who is the OLDEST person you know that plays Warhammer Fantasy or Warhammer40k etc.?

I personally know of a 56 year old who plays in RTT's and other tournaments down south. He is also doing a beginners painting and modelling class for the local kids because he'd rather them "be here with me than being out smoking crack".

Can you D.I.G. it?

Hmmm. I got into 40k when I was 23. 25 now. I do know someone atleast twice my age at a local store that plays.

I dont know if its just me but it seems that wierd stigmas that were once placed on games being just for kids has seem to have vanished with our generation.

@Trooper, that is because the kids of your time are still playing those games and they are alot older now.  I have been playing D&D for over 25 years.

Warhammer has been around since 1983, and I am sure that many of the people who started playing it that year are still playing it today. If they were 18 in 1983, they are how old today?

Modern miniatures wargaming has been around for nearly a century with H.G. Wells "Little Wars" 1913 publishing. With Warhammer coming out in 1983 and Warhammer 40,000 coming out in 1987, and there already being scattered groups of grizzled old geeky grognards, it's quite possilble one could be considerably older than 18 when they first started fooling around with one of GW's games. I'd even imagine some grandparents that enjoyed historicals or other such games might be lured in by LotR or Fantasy by their grandchildren.

At the old LFGS, the owner was a fifty something who had first gotten interested in historicals miniatures and then fell in love with Battletech. He still plays WHFB at least once a month as well as several other games. I don't think miniature games were ever meant just for kids, though, recently, GW sure seems to want it made to seem that way.

I think most wargamers find it odd that games which were once for adults are being played by kids.  Most wargamers are much older than the average 40k player. Actually most games have a "graying" problem, i.e. the player base is getting to old to play anymore. 40k in particular has the oposite problem, as the game gets more accessable, and the miniatures simpler, the average age gets lower, leading to a much higher churn rate in those in "the hobby".

Nothing unusual with a late 50/early 60 something playing Flames of War. It is a historical game, after all, and historicals are wonderful in their lack of munchikns.

Well, I'm 30, and the people I play with range in age between my age and late 30s/early 40s.

I did know a guy in the 'nati who was a retired dentist and played Bloodbowl, among other things. He was solidly in his 60s. A congregant too, no less.

Happy Birthday Malfred!

I'm excited by this little game/thread. Whoever wins the oldest member award (Will it be KilKrazy?) should put "Dakka's Senior Member" as their Title and henceforth wander into threads demanding respect, telling everyone about how great the old days were and proclaiming: "I've been playing Warhammer since before your mom accidentally got knocked up with you".

Game on!

My first experience with Warhammer was WHFB v1 at university in about 1983. So I actually did start playing before some of the younger members were "twinkles in their fathers' eyes."

I can't claim to be an experienced player though, as most of my wargaming has been historicals.

I may not be the oldest Dakka member, but that doesn't keep me from bring the old crotchety guy who stands on his lawn in his bathrobe and yells at the young punks to keep it down.

I think I'm 38. She Who Must Be Obeyed has to calculate it for me at this point. I'm getting a bit Alzheimery.
