To prove not all wargamers are geeks, I thought it would be amusing to list well-known people who are wargamers or military model enthusiasts. (That is, people who are famous due to something else, not because they are famous as wargamers.

Here are four to start with, all British or NZ. Does anyone know any more?

<list>

  • Brian May, musician.
  • Deryck Guyler, actor (d.1999).
  • Peter Jackson, film director.
  • Edward Woodward, actor. </list>

  • I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

Eons ago there were rumors that Robin Williams got into 40k with his first son. Very rumor though.

[edit] Actually, according to this Wikipedia article, Williams is a self-confessed miniature wargamer! No rumor at all it seems.

Standing outside Jester's house demanding the things he took from my underwear drawer.

Tom Griswold from the Bob and Tom radio show used to frequent my shop as did Reggie Miller (Hall of Fame BBall player from the NBA) Tom just cam in because his kids were 40K fans so I guess that doesn't count, but Reggie was an avid strategy game player with Chess and Quarto being some of his favorites.

Kevin Smith (director)?  I know he's a comic geek, so I'm sure somewhere he's mentioned playing games.

That could explain why the actor playing his son in the motion picture Enemy of the State can be seen reading a copy of White Dwarf magazine at the end of the movie.

Steven Colbert went on a long rant about playing D&D when he was younger on Conan.

I have a link to it, but NBC made them take it down.

As an actor, I can tell you, being one does not make you less of a geek. Many actors are geeks. As I'm sure many musicians are as well (actually maybe moreso as music can be pretty mathematical in its way).

Honestly, I wouldn't say it counts if you say "famous wargamer" (i.e. present) but refer back to when they used to play as a pimple-ridden, loser teenager (which may be true but it doesn't matter anyway since all D&D teens are pimple-ridden losers until they grow out of it and become cool - or not).

Also, they might not be actor-famous, more like internet-infamous, but I wonder if any of the internet's (in)famous characters such as the Star Wars Kid, William Hung, or the Numa Numa guy are wargamers. Obviously they are geeks, but it would be fun to know.

A long time ago when GW had their grand opening of their Santa Monica (CA) Store (around 1990), Robin Williams was with his son waiting in line with us fellow geeks. It was great back then because on the day they opened up there store, they had an awesome sale, which included buying two blisters ($7.50 for 5 figs per blister!!) and getting the third for free. They also gave away the limited edition SM Captain if you spent over $50, which was very easy that day. Ahhhh.....those were the days

according to german Wikipedia (english site is currenly down) the work geek comes from the angle-saxon work "geck", a person on a medievil festivel who bit the heads off living animals.

Correct, a geek in a circus is a person who entertains by biting the head off of a chicken or similar small animal and then spraying the  blood around.  Curiously, that usage is no longer current.

The more modern usage, where a geek is something like a nerd and a dork rolled into one is fairly new, and arose as an insult related to the prior usage.

It's free on the web: Just search "Little Wars" by HG Wells. First printed in 1913 or thereabouts, it's considered the forefather of modern tabletop wargaming. After all, why do you think sooo many game stores are named "Little Wars"? And it's not that they're chain franchises, they aren't, at least, not in the US. However, I wouldn't count Wells, since his writing, which includes "Little Wars", is what he's famous for.

Edit: And before anyone jumps on me about "copyright blahblahblah", it's free because of copyright law (ie: it's copyright ran out). That is, it's long passed into the public domain, like the works of Edgar Allan Poe, Shakespeare or many others whose works are legaly available online for free.

Curt owns part of mulitman publishing
so he is probably the biggest geek in this list. as he plays ASL .

also, Jeremy Horn (UFC fighter) plays things from D&D to 40k. i would not recomend getting into a rules argument with him
