Why I outta...

Last weekend a shiny Proxxon hot wire cutter arrived, so I've been having a play with that rather than painting this week; moslty just getting it set up and working out how the hell I cut nicely squared sections from the large block of foam and then cut that into thinner pieces for actually making buildings from. Still working on that bit. I strongly suspect I need some different tools for that... the shiny foam building book doesn't cover that part at all, it just assumes you have cut up the foam into the correct thickness/size pieces before you start... helpful.

On the plus side, I've had some scraps to try texturing while in conference calls. It seems to be a better alternative to painting as it is just doodling.

Dominion also finally arrived, so last night the printer got a full breakdown, clean new FEP, re-levelling and *everything*. This morning I have a perfect set of sallet heads to go on the Stormcast once I get around to assembling them.

Nice , I'm sure if you ever have to video conference, it's easier to slide the Styrofoam offscreen then pack up your paints, brushes and other sundries too.

Which files are you using for the new Stormcast heads, I might give them a shot on my older Stormcast before I decide to pick up Dominion.

I need to try the new heads on the old bodies too They are from the Reptilian Overlords range https://reptilianoverlords.com/product/mercenaries-and-militia-stl-expansion-set/

These sellers are slightly larger than the empire greatsword heads, but they look slightly better as it isn't quite so pinhead-like

Those are some good fuggly faces, especially useful for the eventual fallen Stormcasts that will eventually show up.

It seems the heads are slightly larger than the Greatsword sallets, but the 3d printed ones look a lot better on the figures. This is the start of a sample of the paint job. I need to work out how to batter it up a little bit

The heads seem to work nicely on these. The main issue is the female bodies as they are thinner than the males, so the helmets sit too high up. The easiest option here is to trim down the rear neck protection so that the back of the helmets sits over the top. For the male torsos the sallet sits nicely inside the front and back neck guards. I also did a bunch of repositioning of the duplicates arms so that everyone in the squad has a different pose. Not a difficult thing, you just snip off the pegs and swap the arms

For the other two unit types, the heads also fit quite nicely. In all cases I left off the heads and put a ball of green stuff inside for the heads to sit on

The heads do fit onto the old Stormcast bodies and look ok... it's just that the old figures look terribad compared to the new ones

The heads look good on there . I purchased another style of Sallet helms that I found on thingiverse right after I bought Dominion this weekend . I Have all the non-helmeted heads shown and then using the ones I printed for everything else. Also looking for some helmet plumes and crests to possibly add a little extra.

For some reason the really big stormcast dude reminds me of Mysterio from Spiderman .

I know what you mean about Mysterio. I was very tempted to stick a big ball between the shoulders instead of the sallet

Couple more of the Stormcast got updated today. The banner bearer is a basic head swap, but Yndrasta ended up being chopped off her terrain, cut off the massive, impractical collar and gave her the sallet to fit with the rest of the Stormcast.

Yndrasta's terrain, and the rock from Belladamma have evolved into two new hex tiles.

Yndrasta's stairs are going to become my entry into the current riviters challenge as a secret swampy reading spot

Nice work on the terrain. The Sallethelms are definitely the route to go. I just built my Yndrasta per the plans, but if I get another copy of Dominion that version will get all sorts of chopped up.

I'm currently undecided if I'm sticking to the contrast NMM for the stormcast, or switching to metallics as the second attempt at the NMM didn't come out quite as well, so I'm not sure it's going to quite work out as I wanted. Your metallic ones looked nicer, so I may do an about face and go back to more traditional paints instead... we'll see.

That tile is really nice, it conveys a narrative and tone so well. Perhaps the literary hideaway of a carefree child, or perhaps the last resting place of a clumsy wizard that slipped (or was dragged...) into the marsh below, only his spellbook and lamp left to warn others of that murky fate. Brilliant stuff.

Thanks, I'm really pleased with that one. I really need to make sure I do some times for each of the challenges as it's a great way of getting some inspiration for what to do next!

Speaking of tiles... I had some slight issues with two of the older hexes having subsidence. Years ago as a very early test for the resin printer I'd printed what I thought were solid tombs, so didn't have holes in them for drainage. Turns out after 18 months in a drawer and then 12 months stuck onto a tile eventually leads to this...

The tomb had cracked open and leaked some still liquid resin onto the foam... which had melted itself all over my tabletop. Thankfully it's perspex, so a bit of isopropyl got it off. Always put drainage holes in your resin kids!
The plastic mausoleums have been removed from the melted foam and are now mounted on some 3d printed hexes instead, minus the cracked tombs!

The wolves got rebased onto the proper AoS size bases and two more wolves were added (sorry for the terrible photo, that was about the time I noticed the leakage. At some point I need to do a full army shot and work out points. I suspect it's not as much as it feels like yet

Finally, after fixing the Ender 3, I managed to make a start on printing some of Dragon's Rest Patreon dungeon tiles for Cursed City. Rather than printing the full things that lock together, I've dropped them into the build plate by about two thirds to get very thin tiles for easier storage. Despite being printed on lowest quality, these things look great. There's a bit of stepping on things, but it's only really noticeable if you're right up close and looking. Claire is convinced that the horned skulls on the rug are, in fact, very angry uteruses and finds this very funny...

As lock would have it, they seem to be the same height as the bases for the old Warhammer Quest arches, which is unexpectedly cool

So with Dungeon Universalis on the way, it looks like the plan is now to recreate all of the old Warhammer Quest and DU rooms to match these, either using some of the other Dragonlock tiles as a starting point, or making them from scratch in Blender, which would mean I can then share them with other people.

We shall see. I'm getting ahead of myself here. Again!

Cool dungeon tiles there.

The tombs look like the ghouls dug up underneath to get to the fresher stuff inside

Those are great and the rug is epic! Love it. Looking forward to the next step. Yes, I have learned of the error of not including drainage holes to my cost never mind eh?

Wow, those dungeon tiles have come out a treat, and I love the colour on them, far more interesting than just a standard flat grey. I really need to kick the Ender into terrain mode again after I've moved next month.

Ouch on the leaking resin, I've had some similar issues recently with stuff I definitely did put holes in, but obviously did not clean out thorioughly enough. A sad end to the huge demon I printed as an end-of-campaign battle a few months ago, but ironically the placement of the crack did mirror the fatal blow my players struck to him in that final battle...

Well at least it is thematic
I've had hollowed out, clean models crack before too, which was very odd.

and a big horde of 36 ghouls. These can either be run as 4 units of 10, using the green courtiers from above; or larger blocks bulking out the basic ghouls with some of the Grymwatch as they are apparently not worth their cost.

Most times that I get a split in a hollow model is because when it is printing there is too much suction because I did not have enough vent holes in the print.

The ghouls look great to me. The resin holes under the crypt reminds me of episodes of Supernatural where the ghouls tunnel underneath.

Time for some very delayed updates..

I've added a necromancer to the army to lead the forthcoming zombie plague as well as another vampire on foot. The Vamp is a Highlands Miniatures not-Brettonian mage with some skulls added. Both are quick and dirty paint jobs; neither is fantastic, but I wasn't really feeling either and wanted to just get them out of the painting queue as they had been hanging around partially done for ages.

A few more rooms got printed for the dungeon crawls before my nozzle gave out and started to melt the rubber cowling! Just waiting for a parcel from Amazon before I can do any more filament prints. I'm liking all of them, but the flowers feel a bit... off, somehow. Still. It's more rooms done and there should be another couple next week from the Patreon.

We've also had some notifications that Dungeon Universalis is nearing shipping, so my brain has turned towards building my own world to run it in, rather than theirs. god knows why... it's not like I need anything else to do these days

But, it has given me the kick to start learning how to draw maps again. I want to use whatever DU campaign I play to start building out a living world so that any characters I play live in the same world, the villages the visit have the same shops and there are lasting effects on the world... fail to save the village from marauding beastmen? It's gone... it's never coming back. Fail to save them from zombies/ghosts and it turns into a haunted village that you could then try to purge and help people move back in... that sort of thing.

The first attempt at a village needs the pencils removing, but all in all, fairly happy with it so far

Nice work on the tiles and necromancers.

I like your map work for the town as well. I was already thinking well it needs a xxxxx but then I think I saw it. Which way does the river run? I would think they would build downstream from the woods as they could float the timber.
