Not to sound like a broken record, but I am in the process of finishing up a Masters program AND working full time (AND various family/adult responsibilities) at present so it has been hard to do much of anything wargaming related lately. I really want to use painted models moving forward, and I just haven't had time to get stuff painted.

I Finish my masters in in May, which will free up a lot of spare time to start doing some more intense prep work as far as models/terrain. We are planning to resume this in the Summer and hope to start posting regular batreps again at that point.

Thanks for the show of interest, we will be back...

Really loved reading through your battle reports. It made me nostalgic for the time when my children were about the same age as yours and the three of us would play LotR games, and then later 40K. in my case, my youngest son just didn't like losing any models (and he played horde Tyranids!) so he ended up dropping out of the hobby. My oldest son has been playing now for about 8 years and I've really treasured the connection it has created between us. So keep up the father-son games ... it is expensive but worth it!

Your sons are lucky boys. A father who puts this much care and time into sharing his hobby in with his children is something really wonderful to see (My dad was a hippy and disapproved of my wargamming hobby, so I gotta be jealous of them haha). And that you've bought all those models for them is amazing! Did Owen and Griffin try painting anything or have you been covering that for them thus far?

Also, how did you get the smoke effect on the burning vehicle?
Spoiler:

Looks like fine steel wool with some grey and orange accents.

And a good choice in a name for your oldest son. Always good to see a fellow Owen in the 40k scene I know you're taking a much needed break but a lot of us look forward to the updates this summer!

Thanks for the feedback all, it is motivating me to get back to doing some batreps, hopefully soon.

We have some ideas for some games to play and report during summer break.

Yes the marker is wool that is spray painted and has paint added to hold it's shape.

The boys have not shown a ton of interest painting themselves as of yet, so we buy a lot of eBay models and touch them up, or I use it as an excuse to take a break from my orks and work on something different.

I had posted this in another thread, but I thought i would add it here for continuity:

++ The small line of Imperial armoured vehicles snaked it's way along the roadway under cover of darkness. Ahead was fuel depot M-42, which hopefully held the fuel they desperately needed to ensure they might return to the safety of the Imperial lines further to the north. They had been sent out to scout the location and strength of the approaching Ork horde. That mission has been a success, but the Imperials could not shake the feeling that the Orks would not let them get away without a fight...

Vid-feed below shows the Imperial column "en route" (starting deployment), with vets in chimera on point followed by Cmd chimera, then a second unit of vets and the vanquisher bringing up the rear:

This is a 750pt. campaign game between Orks and IG.

A custom scenario was used:

1. Both armies must be fully mechanized to represent the nature of the encounter.

2. Ig deploy first (no reserves) with one unit touching the center point of the table and the rest deployed as desired behind it to form a column of vehicles facing Northward on the roadway (all units must be embarked in transports at the start). No reserves for the IG.

3. Orks do not start with anything on the table but get turn one to launch their ambush. Roll a D6 for each unit:
1: reserve
2: move on from western edge
3-4: move on from northern edge
5: move on from eastern edge
6: Ork player can choose edge or place in reserve
Ork edges for turn one are all of the northern edge and 36" out from northern edge along both the eastern/western edges.

Ork reserves roll for edge as above yet may enter at any point along the full eastern/northern/western edges.IF a "6" is rolled the ork player may choose any point along ALL FOUR edges to move on from. IF a "1" is rolled the IG playe chooses edge.

The game uses: random game length, kill points, and night fighting.

IG army:
* Company Cmd squad (medic,vox,krak,h.flamer; cmdr w/p. weapon and plasma pistol)
chimera w/ hull h. flamer and turret autocannon
* Vet squad (melta x2, h. flamer, vox)
chimera w/ hull h. flamer and turret multi-laser
* Vet squad (melta x2, h. flamer, vox)
chimera w/ hull h. flamer and turret multi-laser
*vanquisher w/ hull lascannon and "tank ace"(Pask)

Ork Army:
* Big Mek (burna, bosspole, cybork body) (leads ork boyz unit)
* ork boyz (11 boyz+nob) (shootas, b. shoota, nob w/ p. klaw and bosspole)(trukk w/ b. shoota)
* ork boyz (10 boyz) (shootas, b. shoota) (trukk w/ b. shoota)
* war buggies (x3) w/ t.l. rokkits
* war buggies (x3) w/ t.l. rokkits
* war buggies (x3) w/ t.l. rokkits
* looted wagon w/ boomgun

Automatically Appended Next Post:
TURN1[Ork movement phase]:

++ The ork vehicles had been shadowing the 'umies as they moved along the roadway. Da Big Mek had sent some of the boyz racing off to flank the enemy with order to attack when they heard the sound of shootas. As the 'umie vehicles began to slow the Big Mek yelled the order to attack and the sound of racing engines and the firing of shootas and rokkits filled the night...

The looted wagon and one unit of war buggies had failed to arrive in time for the ambush (boh rolled "1" and had to be place in reserve).

A trukk full of boyz and a unit of war buggies arrived from the western edge with guns blazing while a unit of buggies moved full speed from the northern edge hoping to get into range for next turn:

dakka dakka dakka!!!

The trukk containing the boyz led by the Big Mek arrived from the eastern edge with guns blazing:
"Attack!!!"

ORK SHOOTING [TURN1]:

The lead chimera is hit from both sides by combined shoota and big shoota fire from the two trukk riding boyz squads who manage to spot it in the darkness and is immobilized and shaken.

The command chimera is hit by a single rokkit from the buggies to it's left and is stunned.

The orks have no assaults or other buisness to attend to, so their turn1 ends...

IG [TURN1]:

The Imperial commander commanded both vet units to deploy and engage the Orks (in hindsight risky as the orks in the trukk escaped all harm):

He issued both units orders to "bring them down", allowing rerolling of all the melta shots. A combination of meltas and heavy flamers destroyed the approaching trukk and one of the buggies, but the orks in the trukk managed to bail out unharmed and now threatened to assault the vets next turn:

The vanquisher used it's searchlight to spot the Big Mek's trukk (scanning 33" into the darkness) on the eastern flank and fired a vanquisher shell that destroyed the engine immobilizing it...
END OF TURN1:
Orks: 0KP IG: 0KP

b]TURN 2:[/b]

ORKS:

Neither of the Ork unts in reserve (warguggy unit and looted wagon) arrive this turn.

Ork buggies speed down the flank while the orks on foot press the attack:

The two remaining buggies on the western flank speed along it and take shots at the side of the vanquisher but only one rokkit hits and bounces harmlessly.

The other buggy unit attempt to target the command chimera but miss with all three shots.

The orks threatening the vets close in behind a hail of shoota fire which kills half the vets, but their morale holds. Later the orks assault and smash the remaining vets and continue their push forward.

The orks led by the Big Mek assault the immobilized chimera at the front of th column and destroy it's remaining weapon leaving it unale to move or fire for the rest of the game.

IG:

The vanquisher illuminates the flanking buggies and blows one to bits with a shot from it's vanquisher battle cannon, while the nearby vets are again ordered by the commander to bring down the remaining buggy. Their heavy flamer and meltas finish off the last flanking buggy:

The command squad which had disembarked lends it's firepower to a chimera's that advances to hit the rampaging orks with it's heavy flamer and multi-laser. Together they kill over half the Ork mob, but it's morale holds.

The command chimera pushes forward and flames the Big Mek and his boys reducing them to four models, but again their morale holds.

End of Turn 2:
Orks: 2 KP
IG: 2 KP

TURN 3:
ORKS( Top of turn):
This turn saw all of the ork reinforcements arrive (a unit of three rokkit buggies and a looted wagon w/ boomgun) and some brutal shooting from the orks.
The remainder of the boyz mob move toward the IG command squad and rake it with shoota fire dropping three targets despite the best efforts of the medical servitor. They then assault and lose a few boyz but with some savage fighting by the nob the IG command is wiped out.
The unit of rokkit buggies arriving from reserve from the western edge manage to destroy the vet chimera with two penetrating rokkit hits.
The looted wagon also arrives on the western flank from reserve and blasts the vet squad killing four of them and their morale breaks. They fall back toward the south edge.
The other war buggies press toward the middle unloading a salvo of rokkits on the command chimera immobilizing it and destroying the multi-laser.
IG (bottom of turn):
The vets do not rally and continue to fall back towards the south edge. They are not in range of the looted wagon.
The vanquisher fires at the looted wagon but only immobilizes it.

TURN 4:
ORKS (Top of turn):
The ork boyz ineffectively fire at the last immobilized chimera and eventually assault it so that the nob can tear it apart with his power klaw.
The looted wagon sadistically fires it’s boomgun at the fleeing vets and scores a hit evaporating all but a lone guardsmen.
The two rokkit buggy squads move 12” toward the vanquisher but only manage to hit with two of five rokkits and both bounce.
IG: (Bottom of turn):
The Vanquisher finds itself alone and facing multiple threats. It backs up 6” hoping to keep it’s rear armour unexposed and fires a vanquisher shell at the looted wagon getting a direct hit and a destroyed result!!!
TURN 5:
ORKS:
The orks run toward the vanquisher but are still a ways away.
Both rokkit buggy units move closer and fire rokkit salvos at the vanquisher. Front armour stops one salvo, and the rokkits I the left side arc miss.
IG:
The vanquisher destroys a rokkit buggy with a vanquisher shell.
We roll to end the game and the game continues…
TURN 6:
ORKS:
Is a repeat of turn five with the orks immobilizing the vanquisher and a few few rokkits bouncing.
The boys run again and will be an assault threat next turn.
IG:
The vanquisher continues to make it’s last stand destroying another buggy with a pen. 6 and a resulting fireball!!!
We roll to end the game and again the game continues…
TURN 7:
ORKS:
The bigmek leading his three remaining boys runs but will not see any action as I forgot to move them for three turns as I forgot them hidden behind the chimera wreck/smoke plume ...

The boyz move into assault range. The buggies fire rokkit salvos tearing off the vanquisher cannon and shaking it.

The boyz assault and the nob roars triumphantly as he tears the tank asunder with his klaw. However in his fury of blows he pierces the fuel tank and the resulting explosion kills all of his remaining boyz!!! Oops…
