Haha not for awhile at least. There are a few more models ahead of those in my queue though I did buy the starter set. I'm sure you'll have yours done before me

Hey Eggroll,

Been watching this thread for a long while and with the new Primaris stuff have decided to do some Blood Ravens and want to try to replicate your red for the base colors.

A couple questions-

1) What primer do you use? I know you mentioned Duplicolor Rust primer, but when I google that I can only find automotive primers. Is that what you are using? Where do you get it? Link (if you don't mind me being that guy)? The primer I have had in the past comes out too grainy and I wanted to try your process.

2) What psi do you run your airbrush at? I am a noob, but getting better. =)

Keep up the inspiring work!!

Hi Hida77,

Thanks! I've been meaning to do an updated write up about my new colour scheme...it's brighter than my older one. For now I'll answer your questions:

1) I've switched to using a black undercoat primer which I find to be faster for my painting workflow. I use Vallejo black airbrush primer for normal models and duplicolour black primer for terrain pieces. The duplicolour is a car primer so that is the correct one that you're referring to...it's usually labeled as sandable primer I believe. I got it from Canadian Tire (assuming you are from Canada). Just make sure you shake it well and prime in ideal conditions (not too hot/cold and hot too humid). Otherwise stick to an airbrush primer which is much harder to mess up.

2) All airbrush work is done at 20psi or below. Primer is thicker so that is shot at 20 psi...for normal paints it's around 15 and really detailed work like shading on small metallic areas are done at around 10-12.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the response!

So I assume that means you just inverted the process? Prime black then Airbrush the Red on over the top? I went ahead and ordered some black primer as you mentioned. I'll stick to the Vallejo stuff for now, will see if I need the Duplicolor later.

Anyway, keep it up, really love how your models come out. hope mine will be half as good. I'll post pics when I get something I'm proud of =)

Thanks again for the help!

No worries and yes, it's pretty much an inverted process that produces just as good results in a shorter time. Here's a pic of the paints in order of application:

AB Primer on left, followed by shading of Vallejo Fire Red while leaving the deeper areas black then followed by midtones using Vallejo Blood Red and final spot highlights with GW Evil Sunz Scarlet. This process produces more saturated reds than what I was doing awhile ago which I prefer more. If you put my old models side by side with new ones they do differ but by a huge amount.

Painted up some older vanguard veterans that I've had around for awhile now. I ended up rebasing them in 32mm which works much better for the heavier and taller metal models. Having gone back and painted these ones, I've quite thankful for GW switching to all plastic which is much easier to model/paint.

Also painted where a Gamesday 2005 Space Marine, Deathwatch Antor Delassio, old BA Vanguard Veteran Sergeant and the 30th Anniversary Space Marine.

This was first time testing out the Micromat photo backdrop which I backed on kickstarter a few months back - not bad but the print isn't find enough for close up shots.

The background does go well with the figures and bases. though they mute out some details it's not enough to take away the quality .

Thanks SL. The backdrop actually matches closely to the printout I used from MassiveVoodoo years ago which is why I backed their kickstarter. Turned out pretty well though I think you're right about not enough contrast with my BA paint scheme. It did come with a "colder" backdrop with blues in it so I might give that a try for the next models I photograph.

They may be harder to work with, but those older metal sculpts really are fanstastic looking, and your paint job makes them even more so!

Thanks Luther! Always good to see another BA painter around! I'm looking forward to seeing what you have coming out and the army shot you've been promising!

lol I've been promising that army pic for a while, huh?

Well, hard deadline time, when I finish the tasks currently on my desk I will finally take some. That is:
- Upgrade remaining models to 32mm bases
- Captain Aphael
- Mephiston v3
- Jump Librarian
- Deimos Rhino
- Rapier Mortars
- Techmarine
- Inquisitor Consadine

Reason being, when those are finished I'll be taking a break from Blood Angels and working on something else..!

All the above are in various stages of completeness so it shouldn't be long!

Hope it won't be much longer. Even though I have lapses in my hobby, I know I can always get some inspiration from you blog and threads on B&C to pull me back in when I need it the most. Definitely tuning in for your grand army reveal

Thanks Meph! It's been awhile and my life these days don't allow me to paint/surf Dakka as much but be sure to check back every once in awhile to make sure I'm still alive

After 4 months of silence I'm back! Gone but not dead...I had some time with the Christmas break to finish up some models before the end of the year. These are FW dreads I've had sitting around for years and pretty much rounds out my dread collection. Most you'll recognize as either black templar, dark angel or ultramarines which I've modded with BA iconography instead. All of them had very nice standards that I ended up chopping up and using as basing material as well Given the recent storyline changes with Baal and 'nids, I felt the modded Ultramarine one was the most appropriate. Anyway...pics:

Thanks guys!

For the third year now going to summarize the models painted for 2017:

Jan:
- Centurions

June:
- Firestorm Redoubt

- Promethium Pipes

- Aegis Defence Line and Cities of Death walls

- 9 BA bikers and 2 BA attack bikes

- CE Terminator Captain

July:

- Metal Vanguard Vets

- Gamesday 2005 Space Marine, Deathwatch Antor Delassio, old BA Vanguard Veteran Sergeant and the 30th Anniversary Space Marine

November:

- Fortress of Redemption
No pics unfortunately

Dec:
- 4 Dreadnoughts (pictured above)

Overall a pretty light year for me in terms of progress towards painted models. What is not listed are some models that I have assembled which includes a Reaver Titan (to be painted in 2018). The BA army will continue as my collection grows! More to come in 2018!

Appreciate it Luther. Too bad you got out of the BA collecting. I still have that picture of all your BA models that you used for your for sale post open on one of my browser tabs.

Yeah I agonised over that decision, but in the end it was something I just had to do! I kept a few models and I still have some in progress. I intend to go back to them every now and then and paint one when I need a break from green

Just when I thought I was out...they pull me back in!

Time to bring this thread back from the dead! Been almost a year since I last painted anything so figured I would dust off the ol’airbrush to make sure I hadn’t forgotten anything. To get things started I painted up the large scale Space Marine model from Forgeworld which turned out quite well.

Onto the pics!
