I finally managed to squeeze a day off work earlier this week, which finally allowed me to do some painting. First time in such a long, long time...

The recent release of Konflikt '47 and the beta rules for Achtung! Cthulhu skirmish, my poor brain has been flooded with ideas for weird war 2 games, so I've started working on some more WW2 bits and pieces that can double up as WWW2.

We have a few British officers and command figures

A commando machine gun team

and an M10 Tank Destroyer. This is the Warlord plastic kit which, I think, is quite nice as a gaming piece as it has enough detail to come across nicely on the table, but isn't particularly fragile as they have carefully reduced the number of parts. I did end up replacing the gunners though as there was just something that felt off about the ones that came with the kit. Instead, I used one of the relaxing passengers from the Universal Carrier kit

Speaking of the Universal Carrier, the Konflikt book has a neat Automated Carrier for the British forces. This has replaced the human crew with Turing's automatons and some heavy guns. I've chosen to represent the heavier calibre weaponry with dual Bren guns that I imagine have special ammo and a faster feed system.

On a different note... I must not buy the BMG starter set with Suicide Squad. I *do not* need another starter set for another game system that I'll never play... especially since Death Masque just arrived and the Stealer cult goes up for preorder at the weekend. I don't need Batman in my life too do I?

Wouldn't you if you were forced to be in a war you didn't want to be in?
I think I would be disturbed if I saw a soldier figure that looked excited rather than sad or shouty

You are such a bad influence. It depends what the stealer cult release is like this Saturday I guess. At the moment the rumoured kit content doesn't seem worth the price... But we will see when the pictures appear with the actual contents

Well, for BMG, go to Outpost and get 14 metal minis, 2 buildings, street furniture, rules and dice for £60.

Your wish may come true. Today we went to have a nose at the Armies on Parade boards at my local GW... I was distinctly unimpressed with all of them to be honest. Half didn't have boards and those that did have boards were... dull. The best one had one piece of terrain and some wraithguard painted up as statues, but then the rest of the models weren't great. None of them really included a story... most just placed an army onto a board and called it a day.

I think it is time to dig out all the old notes on Inquisitor Gale and her retinues and see if any of the newer kits can fill in some of the holes that I had. The main issue is still how to bulk it out so that it isn't just Gale, T0-20, the Tin Man, the Coward and the Heartless and have them be memorable, rather than faceless troops. I did think about adding in some other literary characters, much like Once Upon A Time does, but that weakens the overall theme...

Still. I have 12 months to faff. This month I need to crack on with the Cult and get that sorted, than I'll pack away all other projects and try to work on this one a bit more. Feel free to poke me if I don't!

You can use the munchkins (squats), the witches, Oz himself without even digging much into is. Maybe do a section of the board in grey tone with a house in it.

Ah I already have a list of characters for the warband and a sketch for the board. I guess the one thing that I need to work out is, do Armies on Parade have to actually be full, legal units? I know they don't have to be a legal army, but can you just pick and choose figures from all over the shop? At the moment this is more like an Inq28 warband than something that could be built as a legal ally force

For the characters that would work, I have the following:

Inquisitor Gale's retinue
Dorothy Gale - Inquisitor (Ordo Hereticus)
Toto - Assassin
Tin Woodsman - Dreadnought
Lion - Penitent Astral Claw - Acolyte in power armour
Scarecrow - ??
Jack Pumpkinhead - ??
Drop pod Typhonicus

Defenders of Oz
Wizard of Oz - Inquisitor (Ordo Malleus)
Princess Ozma - Psyker
Belfaygor of Bourne - Acolyte with a massive beard. Include scissors as heraldry
Betsy Bobbin - Mounted female acolyte (bike or horse)
Cap'n Bill - Acolyte with peg leg
Fyter the Tin soldier - Either another dreadnought, or an acolyte with two bionic arms and 2 bionic legs; armed with a sword
Glinda - Psyker
Guardian of the Gates - Priest with goggles and large key on chain
Herby - Medicae servitor
Hungry Tiger - Cult assassin (use a Frost Sabre)
Jellia Jamb - Female Crusader
Shaggy Man - Acolyte; ragged clothing/penitent style

Ku-Klip - Mechanicum Magos/datasmith
Chopfyt - Combat Servitor
The Gump - Kataphron with elk like head
Tik-Tok - Domitar-Ferrum

Probably some ratling snipers in there too.

The last one that I'm still undecided about is
Soldier with the Green Whiskers - In the books he is a one man army that defends the city of Oz, he also has a long green beard. Gut feel is that a knight would be pretty cool here, but I can't work out how to get a beard onto it... or if I can actually fit a knight onto the board. He may turn out to be just another acolyte

OH-I Wanna get out of here

Looks like the sole restriction is that it is a 2x2 board. No smaller, no larger.

Apparently you don't even need that according to the faq on http://www.armiesonparade.com

Does my army have to be a legal force in the game?
No. You can have any collection of Citadel Miniatures you like, but we’d suggest you pick a theme in line with the appropriate setting.
Is there a height limit on the boards?
No. Your board can be as flat or tall as you like, as long as its footprint is no bigger than 2’ x 2’.
Do I have to have a board?
No, you can join in without one if you like.

So it looks like I can do whatever I want

Knight's green beard could instead be a giant crotch banner maybe? Love the theme, and your ideas rule

Scarecrow - servitor maybe? Looks quite cobbled together.

Jack pumpkinhead could maybe be a DW marine of some sort? I'm just thinking the aethetic (orange head, black body) - Angels Resplendent, Knights of Dorn, maybe some others. Angels would be good also because the whole BA blood rage thing could be your equivalent of Jack's seasonal change in temperament?

If you want to be swish with your road you could have the ruby red road intertwined and going off in the other direction... (just making more trouble for you here )

I'd forgotten about the ruby road as well, thank you. I'll have to have a play with adding that in as well. The next step is to get some large bits of paper and draw this out in actual size. As I don't have anywhere to actually store this long term, I want to make it disassemblable so that any larger terrain pieces are reusable. Makes me wonder which road the Dark Eldar would be attacking down? I'm going to need to pick up some haemonculus troops to massacre and possibly some jetbikes to crash into the ground

As for Jack, I'm not sure if Deathwatch fits as he's supposed to be even more cobbled together than Scarecrow. I was thinking maybe a Skitarri Infiltrator and moving him to the AdMech warband.

I'm also trying to decide if Typhonicus should be a drop pod or Blackstar. The Blackstar looks cooler, but doesn't have quite the comedy value of having some feet sticking out from underneath

Oh. Green whiskers don't have to be a beard... it could be a moustache of some sort... maybe the head of the knight is sculpted to look like a noble warrior with a big moustache and one of the bionic eyes made to look like a monacle, rather than the usual knight masks?

hmmmm

Ahhh, let the random painting thread of doom arise from the depts again. Apologies to all and sundry for the constant abandonment of the thread... life keeps happening which means even when I do get to do painting, I don't get to post about it very much afterwards. Dorothea has not been forgotten and the Woodsman is back in the painting queue to try and actually finish... I need to start having a play with sculpting the axe again soon.

Anyway... Since we last met, way back when, I was involved in the annual Analogue Hobbies painting challenge over on Blogger. This means I have lots of pretty pictures to show you all and talk about... so rather than a big dump, I'll drip feed it in groups.

I'll start with some additions to my Commando force for BA/Konflikt '47/A!C as there has been some discussion in the news thread about figures

This is a bit of a mixup of units.
At the front/right we have a few Commandos built with some of the plastic USMC arms so that they have rolled up sleeves, because command squad vets should look much harder/rougher than the standard commandos . Behind them we have a few basic commandos to bulk out the existing squads with more options and their pet tank. All of these are Warlord kits and, as usual, went together very nicely. The kit bash elements fitted surprisingly well, so I may try to find some more spare USMC arms to do more vet commandos. Seems a bit of a waste to buy boxes of the marines, just for the arms though

In the middle we have a Pulp Alley figure acting as Lobster Johnson

And to the left we have three resin Achtung! Cthulhu figures that were given away with the 2 player starter set preorders. They will be released separately at some point, I think as part of a character box? Scale wise they go nicely with Warlord's earlier plastics, before the hands started to increase in size. They still look fine against the conversions in this group though, so I see no problems with them.

Yesterday I showed off the Commando additions. Today you can take a peek at the German forces I painted. I'm surprised by quite how much I painted for these over 2 months!

That totals up to be one Goliath, one Tiger, one Hannomag, 65 mixed infantry and one mortar team! There is a mixture of early war Heer, Grenadiers, Fallschirmjager and Pioneers. I didn't pay too much attention to which arms/heads went onto which body as I want a very ragtag looking weird war force that is running out of resources, so they are using kit that is very out of date. All new resources are going on producing power armour or walkers. The mortar team is made up of the crew and mortar supplied in the hannomag kit. These are supposed to go into the back of the vehicle, but it made more sense to make an extra unit instead.

Moving on to the weird war side of things

This lot is a mixture of all sorts of things. We've got some Modiphius characters, Black Sun troopers and Night Gaunts along side some Konflikt '47 Heavy Infantry and a werewolf, a pulp alley super villain and some kitbashed german zombies.

On a different note, I'm sad that I missed out on the Shadow War game. I was looking forward to that immensely... ah well. At least I now have extra money to spend on something else instead

Thanks, it was interesting to actually be painting a full army again. It's been a loooooong time since I've done that. That isn't everything that has been painted either, there are still summaries for 30k, 40k, AoS, Batman, Wild West and Star Wars to come this week... as well as the bits I'm currently working on

Hopefully I can remember to keep on posting this time and not get distracted by work...

Love the Weird War II stuff - gets my psyched to start painting up some too!

If I could only settle on a good game system to use for Weird War II...

Ideally, SoTR would release a proper 2nd edition and I'd just go from there...

The author did say they were working on 2nd ed in the kickstarter comments somewhere. Given that the KS did well for the models, I would not be surprised to see a second campaign for the rules at some point.

I have no idea what rules to use either, so I am just painting them for fun at the moment. Konflikt is ok, but limited in unit choices. Achtung! Cthulhu has more choice, plus magic, but no walkers... so is equally unsuitable for everything

As I mentioned yesterday, it isn't just the WW2/Weird war stuff that I've been painting recently. The next little batch are a few more Stormcast characters for use in Silver Tower/Hammerhal, plus a couple of spare stormcast from the AoS starter that I felt like putting paint to... because. These were done just after Christmas

The two flying characters were a bit of a kitbash. The Azyros/Venator character sprue comes with the parts to make one of the two characters in full, plus a big pile of spare arms, heads etc for the other character. So, in a fit of costsaving, I used the spare bits on one of the Prosecutors from the AoS starter as another WQ character was more useful than three Prosecutors that don't have WQ rules. I have no idea why flying characters are in the Silver Tower anyway... seems a bit of a dumb idea to me, but I guess GW needed a way to sell more of the Venator kit

This week I've been painting up a few other bits from/for Silver Tower and AoS.

The Lord Castellant from Hammerhal was finished until about 2 seconds ago when I noticed that I've forgotten to paint his belt buckle... so he is headed back to the painting table

The first Tzaangor got a test coat of paint yesterday, to see what to do with them. The weapon and scale armour are supposed to be silvery/pearlescent, but I can't quite get the look right... in the photo they just ook like white with some green blobby bits. Any ideas of tips to improve that would be gratefully attempted!

The Tower is going to be run by a Gaunt Summoner (WIP below) who reports to a daemon prince who calls himself the King in Yellow

The King has managed to gather warbands dedicated to Tzeentch and Khorne so far. No-one is quite sure how he has managed to get these two to work together, but the Bloodbound have now taken to wearing yellow as well

Really liking your Weird War and AoS models especially that Lobster Johnson. Good idea with the rolled up sleeve commandos, those bolt action miniatures fit right in along side Acthung and Lobster Johnson.

I think I will hold off until after I receive my Achtung skirmish rule book and re-read the RPG source books before deciding on what regular troops and commandos to pick up as I am tempted to pick up british troops to fit those two roles if the lore / rules allow.

The rpg lore will absolutely allow it (and will be needed as the rulebook lore is very very limited). The rules on the other hand limit the British elements of the Allies section to just Badger's Commandos, some lease-lend tanks and a couple of characters. For me, this isn't such a problem as my BA force is built for 47 Commando. The rest of the allies section is made up of US forces, which is a bit sad. You could get away with proxying in British units instead of the US ones I guess; this may be because the first campaign book covers a US infantry section with a bit of support. Hopefully the next one will introduce more options as it is currently fairly limited for the allies.

If you are looking to buy the starter, I'd recommend buying it through the online store as you should also get the pdf version, which has had some updates since the print run. Unhelpfully they don't say what these are. It may just be limited to the 4 or 5 pictures for unit entries that changed, I've not really done an end to end review to see.

Thanks! At some point I may build the King himself, but it depends how far I decide to actually go with this though as currently I just want to paint up all the WQ models, which don't include a daemon prince or greater daemons. I guess if I'm going full mythos with this, I need some harpies to use as Night Gaunts (or night gaunts to use as harpies... who knows!).

Today's update covers two very distinctively different topic areas... Shadows of Brimstone and the Spanish Civil War.

These are a few random bits from the Shadows of Brimstone backlog. I figured it was about time I looked at painting some of the before the next batch arrives as they are going to be sending the rest of the Minecart goodies in the next month or two. The sorcerer is one of the pre-release resins from the website. The quality of this is... average, but better than the original plastics. The resin is slightly gritty and detail is surprisingly lacking in some areas, though at least he has both sides of his face, unlike one of the other preview resins. The demon thing is massive once assembled

My painting backlog also has the basis for a couple of wild west gangs for use in whatever western system I end up settling on, plus they work well as extra characters for Brimstone. To go with these I painted some bison and carts to use as scatter terrain

As part of the painting challenge over Christmas we all had to paint up something for the organiser. This year Curt has been expanding his Spanish Civil War setup a bit, so I painted him a random trooper, plus an mg team to brighten up the resistance a bit
