I could watch that for hours. It's amazing how violently those tracks are whipping around when it blows back. I've stood next to cannons at revolutionary war reenactments and that alone was enough to make you feel like you found the brown note. That just looks obscene.

There's also that feeling like you're standing to close to the speakers at a really loud concert and the bass makes you feel like you're caught in some horrible death ray.. only much faster. Probably a massive change in pressure.
Is there word if these are in fact the track units that will be sourced for the model?

After a little digging, here is the relevant quote, of the sculptor, should there be any doubt:
faolan wrote:Without playing with the model, you should get about 45 or so degrees of positive vertical traverse. There's no horizontal traverse.
Limber is done , crawler tracks were done first (then V asked for wheels as well). Gun shield is in the cards once I get the computer fixed. (Also waiting on internet hookup so I can flip pictures to V).
There might be a shorter barrel, larger bore siege mortar based on it as well as the shells for it available later.

I remember watching a gun salute by the Royal horse artillery at the West Mid show a few years back. Every blast you could feel the thump in your chest, more than simply hear the sound. Incredible sensation. (I say a few years back, it must be about a decade now) Blacksails wrote:Seen that gif posted multiple times in many different place. It never fails to please me. So beautiful.

Yeah, there's no doubt that guy in the gif had all his internal organs jolted around like so many snooker balls in a sack of jelly standing that close to the gun.

While most of my friends are either off with their families or relaxing on the beach on Christmas Eve, I am hard at work and have put what should be the last modifications on the tracks (subject to Vic's test prints finding issues), have knocked up a few new pistols and melee weapons, and successfully given my neighbors with the pool the baleful eye while BBQing lunch.
Today's pretty successful, and makes sure you will be getting new toys well into the new year

Have had a break to play Guild Ball with my wife (that's a great new starter set, I'm surprised by how nice the plastics are, especially since they're that slightly softer stuff), then went back to sculpting.

From today's newsletter:
Greetings all,
Welcome to the last up date for 2016. Wishing everyone a safe and happy Holiday and all the best for 2017. Thank you to everyone who has supported Victoria Miniatures this year, your amazing enthusiasm and encouragement means the world to me.
I am so excited about 2017, so much planned. The The BFG Sledgehammer will be shipping early in the year, Jake Schneider has been busy with some fantastic resin upgrades for it. I will be attending Adepticon, and plan to be releasing the long awaited Matilda Tank at the show. Of course the year will also see new squads, characters and bits and more of Jake's amazing wargear.
Here's a sneak peak of some of the stuff coming next month, the Female Rausenburg troops will be joined by their male counterparts, along with new legs, torsos and backpacks. The Picklehaub heads will get a release and perhaps even their own squad.
Don't forget the '300' offer applies to all orders of $300 or more. Just enter the code "300" to receive a 10% discount.
Happy hobbying, V
Not long now! Adepticon is in March.

I recall someone saying something about artillery school, implying that they'd been in the artillery.
How is the cleaning of the barrels of these beasts done? Like is it all rammed from one end, or do you do half of it from the muzzle, and the other half from the breach?
I may be working on accessories to strew on the thing.

Figured I'd throw this thread out there; more on tank barrels but a post further down in this thread says the process isn't terribly different for the 8" and 155mm artillery. Process:
The_Chieftain wrote:Step 1. Make sure gun tube is clear of ammunition. Depress gun if ramming by hand.
Step 2. Open up sponson box, retrieve cleaning rod, bore brush.
Step 3. Assemble cleaning rod.
Step 4(a) Initial cleaning, ram cleaning rod and brush assembly through the bore using three or four lads. One person stays inside the turret to guide the brush back out again.
Step 4(b) Initial cleaning, the easy way. Attach rod and brush assembly to a forklift truck, and use machinepower. One person stays inside the turret to guide the brush back out again.
Step 5. Thorough cleaning: Place rag around brush assembly. Douse with CLP. Ram assembly through the bore using four or five burly lads (or forklift). One person stays inside the turret with another rag to catch the oil as it's squeezed out the breech.
Step 6. Final cleaning: As before, using dry rag.
In addition to working on videogames, The_Chieftain is an Army vet and does a number of informative YouTube videos on armored vehicles for the Inside the Chiefain's Hatch series. He served on Abrams tanks so I'd rate him as fairly reliable on this facet of maintenance.
So...steampunk cleaning forklift? 3 person cleaning crew? Had the most adorable idea for a limited model, but I doubt ideas are a problem so much as time to do them.

The discussion led me to searching last night and I found some interesting videos. Search terms for cleaning self propelled artillery and cleaning howitzers are the ones that had memorable results. Most of what I saw was similar to cleaning a traditional cannon.. lots of videos of people with rags wiping all over the breach and other surfaces in arm's reach.

Thanks for the help, folks.
Sadly, using that as space filler on the side of the tracks isn't going to work, I'd have to completely cover both of them, and then it just looks like I went full herpa-derpa with cylinders.
Righto, next plan!

Hmmm, any possibility of alternate crews for the Sledgehammer?
I like the current ones, but it would be nice to see others as well, allowing the Hammer to be used in multiple armies. The neo-Victorians being a case in point - repurposed cannon from a Dreadnaught turret....

I'm sure they'll come in time, the main issue is that Victoria can only sculpt so fast, and human cloning is imperfect at best.

A friend of mine told me about trying to cook a birthday cake while the battery was firing... the cakes came out... a bit flat....
Another story that he had was the time that they called for artillery support in the field, caught out on a peninsula, and got responses of 'No', 'No', and 'Can you give us more detailed information?'
They gave the information, and then came this rippling thunder that was unlike any artillery fire he had ever heard. When it was done, they weren't on a peninsula anymore, they were on an island.
Their call for artillery support had gotten through to the Iowa - and nothing brings the thunder like the battleships.

That was all that I needed to know - I have this idea for a steampunk scenario... and one for a Fallout version of The Guns of the Navarone. (The Guns of Splash Mountain, anyone?)
