yeah,
I'd say the sweet spot for gaming would be 3 core sets plus the following expansions -
1x Xwing, 2x TieFighter, 2x TIE advanced, 2x Ywings, 2x A-wings, 2x TIE interceptors, 1 YT1300 & 1 firespray.

Giving you.

4 x-wings (3 starter, 1 blister)
8 TIE fighters (6 starter, 2 blister)
2 TIE advanced
2 y-wings
2 a-wings
2 TIE interceptors
1 yt1300
1 firespray

You can run everything from the 8 TieFighter swarm and the 4 Xwing squadron to the more varied builds.
Plus you'll have loads of dice and a spare set of turn templates...

Panic...

So, dunno if this is the right thread, but just got into the game, and I'm loving it. Not interested in playing competitively, just having a couple forces that have some fun character.

Basically, looking at the classics:
-Starter set (have it already)
-Millennium falcon
-slave-1
-TIE advanced

...what ships/quantities of other stuff should I pick up? (Again, trying to make 2 balanced/fun lists, not world ending tournament forces or anything)

I would swap the TIE advanced for an interceptor at least. Besides that you'll really want an X-wing booster. an A wing booster has something fun for both sides - the ever annoying Awing for the rebs and the push the limit upgrade for your soontif fel piloted interceptor and a TIE fighter booster wouldn't go amiss either.

first off: starter, falcon, slave, TIE Interceptor and X-Wing booster. that's two decent fieldable forces, in principle.
Then A-wing and TIE fighter boosters for a little variety.
Advanced and Y wing are good, nice ships but the two I could do without the easiest by far. Still, if you have the previous two packages, they would be quite a bit of fun to play (if you had to pick one, get the Y-wing. more of a style onto itself than the advanced is - more variation on the tabletop IMO . I would probably get another interceptor before even getting an advanced, though.

Don't buy more than that. play with the stuff a bit and by the time you've even gotten halfway through with half of it you'll have a pretty damn good picture of what *you* want more of. every pack is useful, but many are a matter of taste, IMO

I also just ordered the starter set, really looking forward to playing the game. It sucks that pretty much everything is out of print at the moment.

A second starter set is a must! a 2 x-wing and 4 Ties are a great bed rock for squad building.
plus having the extra dice and templates around the table makes playing much more enjoyable. (some attacks require more than 3 dice!)
then get 1x Y-wing and 1 Tie-Advanced.

With these purchases you have enough options to swap around the upgrades and pilots and get a real feel for 100pt squadron building.
Rebel will have 2 Xwings and a Y-wing ( access to ion canon )
Imperials 4Ties and a Tie Advanced! ( access to Vader )

After that like Bolognesus says just buy the boosters that take your fancy when you want them to build up your fleet.
I'd suggest getting the A-wing, Interceptor and booster pack TieFighter before buying the large base ships.

Panic...

Everything but the TIE Interceptor and A-Wing is in-stock at Amazon.com. You might even be able to pick up Wave 1 items and the core sets from Barnes and Noble.

All the ships I've seen on Amazon have been more expensive than MSRP, it's a bit prohibitive. I'll have to check B&N.

Well, when was the last time you checked? As of this post, the TIE Advanced is $13.73, TIE Fighter is $12.71, X-Wing is $14.46, Y-Wing is $14.99, Slave-1 is $23.99, and the Millenium falcon is $22.81. So all but the Y-wing are slightly under MSRP while the Y-Wing is four cents over. Only the A-Wing and TIE Interceptor are outrageously priced by marketplace sellers.

BTW, if you do choose to go to Barnes and Noble, try to sign up to their e-mail newsletter for weekly or bi-weekly coupons. Of course, Father's Day is right around the corner, so they've been pushing the e-mail coupons hard. I've gotten one every day for the past three days...

I think I've stated this before on this thread, but here's my 'Must haves", and it's based on the Battlefoam insert.

2x Starter (The extra dice and templates are required, IMHO)
1x X-Wing
2x Y-Wing
2x Tie Advanced

I do wish that I had room for a Tie pack, to pick up some of those special cards. Oh well.

Thanks, all, but thanks in particular Bolognesus for the advice on the compact force!

Oh, one last bit of advice: get someone to photocopy a "push the limit" card for use with your interceptor if you don't get the A-wing yet. That card on soontir fel is probably responsible for >50% of my nastier maneuvres so far

One last random request out there since it seems to have worked out beautifully for me so far - Do any of you have spare flight stands with pegs? I know some of you have used ships as debris etc, so if those stands are sitting around let me know and I will make an offer!

I've gotten into using minimum pegs where possible as I don't like the idea of breaking stands so I've got a few extras.

Enigma - very random and off topic but I am moving up to Helena in mid July. Looking for a gaming group or place to throw dice. I am not opposed to driving the hour north to GF if that is the closest place. I hear the Helena area is pretty dead.

Is there a real reason for doing this. Couldn't I just build up one army rather than two?

Yes you can most people are doing that so they can play games with friends who might be interested into getting the game. It's much easier to do that when you have 2 forces.

Ya you want both, definitely, it is just more convenient that way by miles and miles. If you only had one army you become reliant on the community, if you have both you can get all kinds of people to play. Since you don't need tons of terrain etc it is much easier to play at home comfortably too.

Very true! I found that by having 2 balanced forces it is much easier to get people excited about the game. My regular opponent and I switch up which faction we play on a game by game basis.

Same here, we switch up all the time, and don't use the same list each time. We aren't running Internet power lists, but try to win. It's a lot of fun, not playing super competitive.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

You want the tie expansion pack and x-wing as they come with unique cards you won't get otherwise, including the particularly useful and illustrious Wedge Antilles -

Looks about right to me, but there are a few things you might wanna add.
#1. A deck box for the cards.
#2. A plano box for all the tokens and dice.
#3. If you aren't getting a second starter, then you either need to extra dice pack, or the dice app.

That's about it.

Really tempted.. as I know my eldest lad would love it. Especially if he gets to play the Falcon.

So, is it overly complicated?

My eldest in nine, getting on ten. He plays 40K with little issue, some minor tactics problems buts that more about his age rather than his ability to play the game. He's also played Heroclix, and Star Wars Mini's with little issue, and beats me at Carcassonne, is learning Warhammer fantasy at the moment.

Do folks who have played it reckon he'll enjoy it, or have played with kids of a similar age range, wargame understanding with no issues?

Hmm... I'm thinking...

Heh, tbh, part of the reason I'm getting tempted is I just got the Star Wars LCG, and Warhammer Invasion a week ago, and they are literally two of the best card games I've played in years.

Going on that level of design, I suddenly thought that the comments I've seen kicking around on how great X-Wing is, from Tom, Kan and others are probably spot on, and its you know.. Star Wars.
