I'm looking to get a black spray paint for my models before I start painting them. I used to have and use Games Workshop's Chaos Black. Is there another Black Spray paint like that which works just as good if not better for the same cost or a better cost? Hell, maybe even something from a Wall-mart of Home Depot since I don't have any GW stores around me.

Suggestions? Or does any black spray paint pretty much do the job?

it comes in many colors and matches exactly to Army Painter paints and pretty close to GW paints

I like grey automotive primer, unless I am working on my Raven Guard for which I use black.

What type? Flat, Gloss? I'm betting on flat, but with no experience on it, I'm going to ask a veteran on it.

I personally like the army painter black primer, I find it gets a more even coating than the games workshop one. That said, there's nothing wrong with games workshop, I get that when my FLGS is out of army painter.

Haven't tried any of the craft ones, but there's a huge range out there I would be interested to hear if anyone has used them. I don't have an airbrush but I've heard some of the gesso primers used by artists can work well watered down.

The Citadel chaos black spray, according to this here internets is genuinly just matt(flat) black acrylic spray paint. Not a spray primer at all.
It does a reasonable job mind you, I use halfords brand matt black spray, but thats a UK chain of stores USA will have some other brand I'm sure.

There is a difference between primer and paint, but I wont go into that now...
I see some that use real primers from other brands and many are perfectly happy with the spray paint acting as the primer. For little plastic soldiers, its doing the job just fine in my eyes. But that behaviour doesn't fly on most types of paint project! lol

+1 to Krylon

Flat/matte is the finish you're looking for.

I'll also toss in a different name: Rustoleum Primer - matte / flat finish.

**I'll do it:
Primer: meant to help adhesion of paint to work surface. Paint doesn't always hold on very well by itself. Make sure to distinguish the 2, it'll save your paintjob later.

I have tried a number of different paints and primers through the years and the best one that I have found is Rust-olem Painter's Touch Ultra Cover. Cost is about $3 US. They also have matte and gloss sprays too in clear.

It comes in a variety of colors and covers like no other spray that I have found. It can be found in any Menard's DIY store.

I have tried the Army Painter sprays and have trouble with it leaving a bumpy surface on my models. Maybe it was the humidity or something else I was doing wrong but this Painter's Touch stuff has never let me down no matter what color I have used or when I have sprayed with it.

Hope this helps.

Pretty much any old flat black spray paint will serve you just as well as Chaos Black spray (or better, if what I've heard about the (in)consistency is true). An actual primer will adhere more strongly, especially to metal, but for your basic plastic model that will eventually be varnished, that's simply not necessary.

If you want the same or better performance, head over to Walmart and pick up a can of Color Place flat black spray. The full-size can will cost you a buck (well, $.99+tax). You simply can't beat that price and it performs perfectly, for spray paint (I've had good luck with the white, as well, if you ever want to try "priming" at the other end of the spectrum). I was a bit leery, when I first went to try it, since it sounded too good to be true, but the numerous recommendations for it proved justified. If you want an actual primer, look elsewhere, but for spray paint, the quality is good and the price/convenience is amazing.

I recommend krylon. I tried using gloss black for the first time after I did some reading on the military /afv painting community , and the gloss underneath the base gives the colors brilliance you don't get from a flat black undercoat.

I'll second Rust-Oleum, their "Painter's Touch" double-cover sprays provide a really nice coat.

I have noticed most hardware-store type spraypaints have a tendency to weaken the bond of previously applied GW thick plastic glue. I don't know if its the propellant or the paint itself or what.

I second the rustolium option. I've been using their grey prime and it's fantastic stuff as long as you don't go too heavy with it.

I use Krylon white for spraying.

For brush on, I use acrylic gesso from an art store. Liquitex's black acrylic gesso is really good for black priming (as is their white).

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

I'm a fan of the Krylon Camo paints. Walmart used to carry them but has discontinued but they are still available elsewhere. It comes in black, tan, army green, dark brown. I have used all 4.

In fact I did my bastions w/ the green and drybrushed weathered over the top.

My Nids get the tan and only devlan mud shading on it for the bodies.

I am having the same issue - GW spray is just too expensive for what it does!!

I tried using a plain old matt black acrylic paint (got it from Wilkinsons - a Uk cheap stuff store) - it melted the plastic. lucky I did a test run first!

I have tried looking for Krylon over here in the UK but no luck so far. Even amazon and ebay dont have a lot!

Halfords
Silver tin with a black cap. Says 'Matt Black Spray Paint' on the side There is a smaller and a larger can. larger one costs £7 something I think.

Still a tad on the pricy side, but it is a slight improvement on the Citadel pricing for a nigh on identical product. For the £10 GW that want.. I would purchase actual spray primer rather than paint, sometimes I do wonder if they think that theyre the only people selling the tools and supplies... With the models.. its almost fair enough.. its a bit of a niche production area, but the plastic glue, spray paint, flock, sand, pva glue, knifes, clippers, files, saws, spray gun...etc basically everything that is not a miniature at GW is a rip off or shoddily produced and sold for extortion.

Just to demonstrate how much of a rip off £10 a can is; at my local car panel and paint supply center, a custom mixed spray can colour only costs me £12... and GW want £10 for matt black? Jog on!!

Another one for Rustoleum Painter's Touch matte/flat. Great coverage, good tooth, little/no loss of detail. I tried Army Painter before...way over-priced for what I got...spent $11 for a can. I also found that Army Painter is much more sensitive to the ambient environment than the Rustoleum (it's very humid here, so envrionmental sensitivity is a big deal).

Search for one. Seriously....this question (and the "what kind of airbrush should I buy") gets asked about every two weeks.

There are literally dozens and dozens of posts on them, with even more info.

Now, most of the info in this thread is good, but for more info....

I use krylon primer for terrain (its a bit thicker)
Armory painter primer for minis
and Army Painter colored primer (its a bit thick as well, use carefully).

See if you can borrow a can from someone and give it a try!
A lot of this stuff is subjective...

Best of luck!!!
