In my game he had the grots on the pad and dropped both heralds next to them with no scatter becasue of the pad. Then in the shooting phase aura of decays all of the grots killing them and building up his epi total to its max all in the first turn. Needless to say I lost the game because he had at that point and unstoppable 3+ FNP force.
He did have LOS to a unit that was probably 50 inches away but theres no way he had range.

The weapon must be in range to shoot. So its a viable tactic, it just takes Epi getting into range.

I agree that is is workable if he's using it to first target my models and the grots were collateral damage. But my forces were nowhere in range of the aura and he used it just to kill grots.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Aura doesnt target any unit, it affects all within a range instead

So how does this circumvent the shooting rules.? It is a ranged weapon, it requires line of sight(per faq),it targets models within range.
I agree it affects all targets within range, but according to the BRB you must declare a target. Aura says nothing about not following that rule. It only states what its effects will be after aura is "shot".
If you dont have a valid target within 6" you can't get the effect.

But still has to have a valid target in range to use.

If no weapons are in range, then a different target must be chosen. Any model that is found to be out of range of all visible enemy models in the range unit doesn't shoot. Thoughts??? First of all, I'll just say that we should really just wait for the new codex before deciding on this one. It will be out soon. That said, the argument is that Aura of Decay does not have a range stat. So then the logic proceeds to say that the range of aura of decay is line of sight. Meaning that you can target anything you can see. This is probably a cheesy interpretation and people will argue against it. The other interpretation is that the range of Aura of Decay is the range at which it can actually affect an enemy model. So that's 6" I think. Since GW is silent on the issue, people will argue both points and disagreement will persist.

It has no "range" stat

"Aura of Decay is a ranged weapon......... When used, all enemy models within 6" of the Daemon.......S2 hits"
From the FAQs..
"You’ll also find that some of the weapons in this Codex are written out longhand, rather than using the weapon profile format in the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook."
So Aura of Decay would look something like Range 6", S2, AP- Nova. if it were written in BRB format. (Yes, Nova is a psychic power Im aware)

I think this does work, but for clarification, doesn't Epidemius have to be on the table for any kills to count towards the Tally? I mean, it takes a few parts moving together in order to work, right?

I don't write the rules. My ego just lives and dies by them one model at a time. |

No is not that hard to set up.
Deploy Grots on landing pad.
1st turn deepstrike. herald(s) & Epi without scatter to top of pad; Aura of Decay dead 20+ grots.
2nd turn Collect the tally. ALL the rest of your nurgle units now wound on 2+, ignore armor saves, and 3+ FNP..
Mostly it depends on getting the prefered wave in to make sure Epi is in 1st turn.

Again it only works if you have a enemy in range to shoot as well

Ohh I agree with you, but there seems to be some that believe that the rules for shooting do not apply to the aura. I'm confused to why some believe this as there is nothing in the rule explaining that shooting should be done from the norm.

Or at least loves to discuss that loophole... My group can certainly discuss and joke about these things, but anyone who tried to bring it to a game for real would be left with a game table without opponents.

So you guys never allow things just to see how they would work out? Allow the other player to bring some outlandish concoction of his own? You never play for fun?

What fun would there be in facing a Nurgle army that starts with the buffs for the tally? Or certain other "creative uses of game mechanics" people sometimes come up with? Not in a regular game with even points vs each other.
Ofc, if someone wants to test it and see how much it's really worth he can always suggest the other side gets to recycle destroyed units back in to join the slaughter. That would be fun for both. :-)

yes. it was pretty early into 6th ed. though and we were all still trying to get the rules down. Even I had thought glancing at it that it was legal. Upon further review I don't feel that thats the case now at all..
And Daemons is one of my armies I play...

Now that the new CSM are out one no longer needs to use the questionable Epidemius and gretchin, instead put 20 cultists around typhus use typhus' destroyer hive that assualt phase and you should have killed around 13 models, this is enough to give you FnP on a 3+ on your first turn as long as you get Epidemius in demonic assualt and as long as you can kill just 2 other models. Automatically Appended Next Post: It's the same principle just less debatably legal
