Hey all,

Over the next year or two I will be putting together a showcase of 40k armies. I'm currently stuck on what chapter I should go for with regards to my marines for display. When I first started 40k 10 or so years ago my SM army was Ultramarine (which I will be putting up for trade shortly I think) but I don't want to go down this route again.

The army will be a mix of most 40k units from GW including tanks etc and also (hopefully) the pre-heresy Terminators and a Jet bike or two from FW.

It would be great if I could keep the units related to the fluff, overall I would like an army that was loyal to the Emperor post-heresy (if that makes any sense).

Many thanks in advance for your help.

You could always do Iron Hands, especially if you're a fan of AdMech stuff. There are a few things fluff-wise that they differ greatly from other nilla Chapters, but their paint scheme is simple, there are loads of conversion options you can follow, since they incorporate a lot of bionics (GW and FW both have kits you can purchase with bionic upgrades). That's my two cents.

Just leaf through the SM codex. There is something along 6-8 pages dedicated solely to different chapter color schemes.

As you don't want to go with the smurf look, just pick something not blue. I'd suggest going with White Scars, Imperial Fists, or The Mentors. The problems with these are the White scars are fairly monochrome and are a biker chapter, the Imperial Fists would meet your fluff but the yellow-red scheme is very striking and may look ugly to some (and reduce the appeal of them being in a showcase) and the Mentors while they have an interesting scheme, are lacking fluff by comparison. I did find a lexicanum article on them though.

If they are going into a display case, I suggest picking a chapter with two primary colors on it and avoid the metallic color schemes. While shiny is nice, too much is very terrible (except on Necron). Monochrome also makes the army look dull.

Will have to try and get a hold of the SM codex so I can have a flick through. I had a look on the lexicam as suggested above and have seen a couple that could work. I wanted to stay away from a chapter that was primarily black. The Imperial Fists was one of my top picks but as you say the colours may be too much. I also quite like the mentos as well, a bit less white maybe I will keep looking for now!

Thanks for the help so far all.
