hello

I never post, but I spend a lot of time lurking. I loves me some GW and i was crushing the interwebs when I came to a screeching halt at the sight of this on forge worlds website;

"To help us continually offer you the best experience on forgeworld.co.uk and help us manage the site, we and carefully selected third parties will store some information on your computer using cookies. Only by allowing us to store cookies on your computer can you browse the website and see the entire range of our great products. To find out more about what cookies are, the type this site uses and how to delete them, please read our privacy notice.

I accept cookies from this Forge World site and want to proceed to access the site."

Look, I want to give you my monies. I try real hard. But this latest hurtle might just be too much. Now we can't be friends on Facebook.

So stop it.

Thanks. Rant end

Do you auto login on dakka? On anywhere? Does dakka remember which threads you have visited by showing them as a different colour? Does any site you visit?

then those sites are also saving cookies on your computer. By the way, every site under the sun does this, and have been doing it since circa 1993... It's no big deal and it's only because a new EU regulation is forcing them to have the disclaimer that they are having it, it is in NO way anything either new nor threatening so jebus chill out...

They have really bad cookies, all dry and crumbly and taste like cardboard.

However most websites don't ask if you want their cookies, they just dump them on you automaticly upon entering the site.

It's the law in Europe that European based companies have to display that notice. Nothing more.

FW was giving you cookies before that message came around. EU law requires them to notify you that it is happening, and give you the option to accept/decline.
So really, they are actually being better to you now then they were before.

Besides, everything gives you cookies, and you can have them auto deleted regularly.

Know thy self. Everything follows this.

You really just want to block third-party cookies/tracking content and most browsers have plugins to do that.

Cookies are not the devil. In most everyday cases they are quite useful. I hate having to relog into sites.

I accept that Dakka uses cookies as it remembers my login etc, it has uses. What exactly does Games Workshop need to put on my computer just so I can browse their site? And what's the benefit to me? And why if I don't agree am I restricted from entering their site?

The country you're in - which I would guess let's them display shipping and item costs in the right currency.
It's not like cookies are only viewable by the website that puts them there - you can check out what they put on your computer.
Edit: and you're restricted because of the absolutely stupid EU law that passed recently.

Except FW doesn't change prices according to your location, which would be awesome.

Instead I have to whip out xe.com to figure out what their stuff actually costs.

It's exactly the same as what Dakka does so you can log in. It's just that there was a law passed in Europe that makes it so that if your website uses cookies, it must inform you first. If Dakka was hosted in a country that enacted this law, then you'd get the same message from Dakka.

If you're worried about being monitored, or your privacy, Forgeworld's cookies are the last thing you should be worrying about. At least they're honest about it.

Most people are missing the point made by Howard A Treesong: You can't visit Forgeworld pages without allowing their cookies, and there isn't a clear reason for why that restriction is in place.

I can browse every site I can think of without cookies. The EU warning is to let people know, not that they must refuse you entry if you refuse their cookies. It is a matter of principle to that not being allowed to browse without allowing their cookies (not knowing what cookies of course, just 'hey you can't come in unless you eat this mystery meat').

On examination of forgeworld.co.uk's cookies, they're all google analytics - so that they know where on their site someone has gone. Not a big deal at all. Along with an ASP.NET cookie for your sessionID, and the FW-ALLOWCOOKIE cookie.

I can't believe people are still surprised by websites doing this. It has almost been going on from the very beginning of the commerical World Wide Web. It's not just European sites doing it - every site in the world is doing it. If you are that paranoid, the internet isn't a good place to be.

To the OP if you never post on here, and your count shows that, rants like this make us want to not to post, either. Cookies are a fact on the interwebz now, like pop-ups and discussion page tough guys.

Just use the "delete cookies" option in your browser once in a while. Or just don't use the internet.

You mean what their stuff estimatedly costs. The only way to now the actual cost is to call your bank and ask them what exchange rate they're currently using, as it's not the same at all banks and it doesn't always match up with XE's rates.

To be fair, the difference on even a $500 order isn't going to be more than a dollar or two. If you're that worried about getting the exact conversion rate within 0.000001% you shouldn't be ordering stuff in other currencies since it's possible for the exchange rate to shift that much between the time you place your order and the time it's billed. But if you're a reasonable person I've never had a case where a FW order cost any meaningful amount more or less than a quick google/XE check said.

I always budget exchange rates high so that I'm not caught off guard. I plan on about 5% shift.

Paypal's exchange rates have always been within .5% of xe.com's rate for me.
