Bit of a strange question, possibly a simple answer but it occured to me when reading over the FAQ a few days ago and I've been remembered it again.

Statement 1:
According to the Rulebook 1.0a FAQ released 9/7/12 (Page 2), Nobz are nerfed and are no longer 'characters' in their profile.

Statement 2:
According to the same FAQ on the same page, if a Nob is leading a unit, it is a character.

Now, in the situation of a group of Nobz, is 1 Nob designated the leader and thus a 'character'?

I'm guessing not, because in a unit of Boyz, there is not a leader amongst the Boyz because that is the Nob.
However, a leader and a character are still 2 separate things in an abstract game such as 40k.

Thoughts?

A unit of Nobz has no "leader" unless an IC is attached.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

A squad leader most of the time if not always a model with a different profile than the rest of the unit, so nop, the nobz are leaderless.

Yeah, this is what I figured. The Warboss is to Nobz what Nobz are to Boyz.

Leaderless Nobz... Oh well.

My personal feelings aside, this whole 'character' thing seems not very well thought through... In my opinion.

Would anyone care to share if there are other character blobs still existing in 40k?
I'm guessing there is got to be more than GK Paladins, Wolfguard, Nobz and Crisis Shas’vre...

There are currently 2 character blobs still in existence (for how long, who knows). Warlocks (Eldar) and Royal Courts (Necron)

I'm aware of the Necron Royal Court blob, I thought there was a Imperial Guard blob also but I dont play Guard so I'm not sure on this.

Any guard players out there?

Marine Command Squad? The one with Champion, Apothecary etc?

That may change considering the impending Codex update, but you can have a unit of characters this way?

IG CCS can put a number of characters within the squad, but it consists of a few Veterans and as such is not all characters. Same with a SM Command squad.

Yeah, I forgot, that any model can be upgraded. Thought it was only 1 model.

The painboy is still a character, so you could consider him the "leader".

But is the Painboy a character, especially since he is technically a Nob?

I would like the Painboy to be a character, so at least there is a way to keep the Painboy alive, but I'm afraid the rules don't seem to support this unless I'm mistaken...

Rules say that a Nob may be a Painboy.

I'm away from rulebook at the moment, but the appendix will say if a model is a character or not. I'm fairly certain Painboyz are characters.

I think that the painboy is the character in a nobsquad, though I really wish that he wasnt. Challenges to a squad of nobs can only be accepted by a painboy, which gives an easy way to remove fnp :(

Only if you accept the challenge. If you don't, the unit still gets FNP, however the painboy just sits there with his syringe up his bum.

Bwahaha! Almost made me spit out my coffee!

But seriously, I'm not entirely sure that a Painboy is a character, as he is still a base Nob with different weapons.

It seems to me he lost his 'character' status before becoming a Painboy, as per the FAQ ruling.
I say this because of this process:

Nob (Character) -> Part of Nob Squad (Lose 'character') -> becomes Painboy -> swap weapons for syringe/tools

There is a lot of precedence that a Nob is a Painboy and vice versa so his base status (which also specifically allows him to take Warbikes for example) should prevent him from being a character if I'm thinking this correctly...

Otherwise he should not be able to take a Warbike... Because only Nobs can take those in a Nob squad right?

According to the Appendix in the back of the BRB, Painboyz are characters. The FAQ took away (character) from Nobz, nit Painboyz. And seeing as how only Nobz can have a Painboy, there is no reason that Painboy would lose his Character status just because Nobz did.

Also, it doesn't say Nobz take Warbikes, it says the entire squad (or unit or whatever).

So, with this, an apothecary in a command squad isnt a character, and then doesnt get precise hits? Or any other 'character' in a command squad, thats being lead by a HQ unit..
