and armoured shins but not thighs was a thing in the ancient world for shield armed warriors as the shield would protect the higher parts of the leg but dropping it low enough to cover the shins was too risky
Aye, plenty of the fellas are missing knee protection:

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough. It isn't the lack or presence of shin armor I was talking about. It is the fact that the ANKLES are made of overlapping riveted plates. That is pretty late period stuff. Most ancient/dark ages shin plates were just single plates, not articulated works like that.

It's Friday! Huzzah! We've some stuff for you too!
(Now, as mentioned previously, Darklands: First Edition is close to fulfilment and so there won't be a great deal to show each week from here on in. Even so, there's still some cracking miniatures ahead - and there'll be plenty of painted miniatures to show, too, even after the project is fulfilled!)
Anyway, this week there's: •sculpt work in progress from Juan Navarro Pérez and Stéphane Simon; •a list of the miniatures that are currently being sent in Wave 3, and what will be sent in the next few waves; •updated lists of sculptors and sculpts; •the latest snippet of the Darklands: First Edition rules; •downloadable versions of the current QuickStarter Rules, Muster Rules and Kindred Musters;
...and anything else you can expect from us over the next few months.
Here we go!
We've three miniatures to show this week, from Juan Navarro Pérez (a Brythoniaid Uchelwr) and Stéphane Simon (two Angelcynn Gesithas)!
With Egbert complete and Wulfred on his way, The Wolfborn are definitely getting there. We can't wait to see these guys in the flesh!
The Gesith champion Egbert is now complete, and looks brilliant.
Thank you Stéphane!
The Gesith musician, Wulfred, is underway...
With just Hrothgar left to do after Wulfred is complete, we are certainly hoping that Stéphane gets all of the Gesith done for Wave 6!
It's been a while in coming but the wait has definitely been worth it. Juan Navarro Pérez sculpted Forwyn Carys (an alternate of Carys from Darklands: First Edition II) first, and then converted her to become the original, Carys. Still, who are we to argue? Carys is brilliant!
Carys will definitely make it into Wave 6, of course...
Wave 3 shipments are almost complete!
Wave 3 shipments are ongoing - we think we're around 90% through them - and they will continue through April to finish them off.
Wave 5 shipments have begun
We have begun mixing items from Wave 5 in with shipments of Wave 3 and Wave 4 miniatures, and we've now moulded Con I Modius and the Hrafnen Crew.
We will try to get everything out as soon as we can, but there's a lot to ship - and as always we prioritise orders in date sequence; i.e., if you ordered early, you'll get your stuff sent early.
What we're saying, basically, is - please be patient! We are doing everything as fast as we can without compromising on quality.
more info on the rules progress etc on the update itself

Another Friday, another update - and this week we've some crackers!
•sculpt work in progress images from Stéphane Camosseto, Roberto Chaudon and Juan Navarro Pérez;
•a list of what miniatures are currently being sent in Wave 4 and Wave 5;
• an updated list of sculptors and sculpts for this project;
•the fourth snippet of the Darklands: First Edition rules;
•downloadable versions of the current QuickStarter Rules, Muster Rules and Kindred Musters;
...and anything else you can expect from us over the next few months.
Let's begin!
We have works in progress from the awesome Roberto Chaudon and the lovely Stéphane Camosseto and the brilliant Juan Navarro Pérez to show you this week!
It's been a while in coming but we have a lovely update of Eoric's Pack, the Werwulfas of Mierce, from Stéphane Camosseto!
The champion, Eoric, is nearing completion...
He looks nearly complete, but don't be fooled - his left hand (under the shield) is not yet done...
The banner bearer, Sigebald, looks great too!
That left hand is still to be done of course...
The herald, Heoruvard, is really howling away...
He's about complete!
The first warrior, Raedwulf, looks very mean indeed...
He's about complete too...
The last warrior, Wealdhere, is stalking his prey!
Wealdhere is almost there, but the hands and entrails are requiring some attention...
Overall, Eoric's Pack is nearing completion, with a few details requiring attention yet...we're still hopeful they'll make it into Wave 6, but we'll see.
Juan Navarro Pérez has been working hard on the alternates and Tonsured Caedoc is now complete. Hurrah!
Tonsured Caedoc will definitely make it into Wave 6!
Roberto has completed Enslaved Ágriosávra, the alternate of Ágriosávra of course, in record time - and he looks great!
Enslaved Ágriosávra will definitely be a Wave 6 sculpt. Next up for Roberto is Khallas...
Wave 4 shipments have begun!
Wave 4 shipments are ongoing - we think we're at around 80% through Wave 4 items - and shipments will continue through April.
Wave 5 shipments have begun too!
We have begun mixing items from Wave 5 in with shipments of Wave 3 and Wave 4 miniatures, but it will be a few weeks before we can mould and cast the Loyal Guard, Eye Ascendant and Corpse Takers - especially with Salute around the corner. Thus, we've decided to take the difficult decision to push those back to Wave 6.
We will try to get everything out as soon as we can, but there's a lot to ship - and as always we prioritise orders in date sequence; i.e., if you ordered early, you'll get your stuff sent early.
What we're saying, basically, is - please be patient! We are doing everything as fast as we can without compromising on quality.
again more details of fulfilment and rules on the update

Carys looks really nice. Not so sure on the werwulfas... their heads/faces look really off, and I can't quite put my finger on why. Maybe too broad across the snout? I dunno, just seems off.
I wonder if it's because they are greenstuff (or a mix with a lot f it in) so the whole sculpt is slightly less 'sharp' than the material used by a lot of mierces other scultpors?
Strangely enough, apparently shooting a bow with the arrow on the outer side of the grip hand helps counter the physics of the arrow bending as it flies from the bow. Or something like that.
I've finally put in my order for the Armoured Ysian Brutes. I look forward to getting them, and hope by the time the other units are close to ending, that I can have enough money to pick them up. Still want some of the new undead miniatures, as their concept looks absolutely fantastic.
She does seem to have the arrow a bit low, pulling to her clavicle instead of her mouth or ear, but probably that is to keep the face exposed.
I have seen people shoot with the arrow on the left or right side too; usually they angle the bow a little one way or the other so that they are dropping the arrow on the string and prod. I don't know if there is any advantage one way or the other though; I am awful with a bow and never really studied it. Just too frustrating for me
If I made faces like that guy in the video, I would try and keep my hand in front. Impressive shooting though!
It's a more modern shooting stance to take, arrow crossing the bow and anchoring the string hand under the chin like that. Tends to be how most modern recurve archers are taught to shoot.
I'm not getting a fierce werewolf kinda vibe from Eoric's Pack, which is a shame as all of the werewolfs seem to have been a let down and I wanted to like them.

Same here - it's been one of the only disappointments for me in the entire Mierce range...
I think the muzzle is a bit broader than what we normally see on werewolves, so that's making them look a bit off. I guess if you're aiming for "wolf/man head hybrid" rather than just a furry dude with a wolf head, it works. It also matches the concept art actually. I was surprised they didnt have tails - I guess these lean a bit more towards man on the man <---> werewolf spectrum.
Yeah, I am a little disappointed with these werewolves too. I like the last ones a lot. (the unpainted actually looks better than the painted.) Something about these just doesn't look that great to me, but I already bought them so I guess I better start liking them more in the future
The closed mouth of the enslaved Agriosavra looks odd - definitely not as good as the original sculpt (this was modified as an exclusive). I'm glad I went ahead with using the original instead of waiting on this one... Have other modified sculpts offered as exclusives looked better?

Yeah, the wattle bleeds into the chin/jaw a little too much for my tastes. Maybe its supposed to be puffed up in a throat display? It doesn't quite match the art IMO, which featured a more distinct jawline.
The exclusives have generally matched their concept, some of which I prefer over the standard version, and others I don't. I greatly prefer the unhelmed Naraa and Birna (non-exclusive) over the exclusive version. Agathae (exclusive) and Velchior (standard) look cooler IMO with the skull helm. However that's just a matter of taste.
Does anyone have any pictures of Thoth and Hanokh? I've had my eye on these two, but never seen any assembled (just concept/renders). Didnt know how beefy they were on a 60mm base.
Also, if you got a infantry combination, how do we indicate which ones we selected?

I've always just tossed which combo's I want into the notes section as I complete my order. If Ive wanted to change out, Ive emailed them with the order number and then gone from there.

Yup, the NOTES section on each order is the way to go.
But, as Vhalan also...notes, if you've forgotten or want to change your mind, their customer service is pretty good there too!
Just make sure to remind them if you buy a set as part of a package and want to swap it out. They refund the purchase price value and that doesn't get you a replacement set. They then credited my account the difference and I was able to pick up the other set I wanted more.
I don't know why I don't get these updates, considering I backed that kickstarter. Oh well, at least you guys are keeping me updated. It's nice to finally see what my wolves are going to look like. I just wish they looked a bit better. I can't pinpoint the issue either, but I think it lies in the head. It's a bit too big and doesn't look very much like a wolf's. Plus, the head doesn't seem to really blend in with the body. It's like the head and body were sculpted separately, and they just slapped the heads on for the pics.
