so recently i played in a 40k tourny winning 1st place with a razorspam with Blood Angels, it was quite fun, but know its time to think for a force for fantasy that can tackle a lot of men and hold strong for the War Herd!

Something based around the Herdstone perhaps.

Honestly Beastmen atm aren't going to win very many games, especially for a newer player. They may possibly be the worst army in the game, if it isnt Wood Elves. The ambush rule they got is pretty cool, but I often find my units coming out on the sides where no one is instead of the enemy deployment zone. If you are set on this, base your army off hordes. In 8th edition now big units are the key to winning games anymore. I'd say 65 Gors to start with FC and additional hand weapons 545pts. To really make that unit shine make sure you put a BSB in with the Beast banner to give them all +1s. This works very well since ideally your other characters will be in here and beastmen bray shaman, or great bray shaman can actually fight a bit. I'd really go with a Greater Breay-Shaman though cause with lvl 4 you can transform him into something nasty, or buff him up with +d6A/+d6S ect, ect,. With that said, totally over look ambush unless you think you will be facing dwarves or empire with lots of warmachines, as its too much chance and may result in units not being able to contribute the entire match, but it would be worth it to ge behind and beat on some AoE dmg machines. That said Go with maybe 40 Ungors, with spears. You can run it a 10x4 and fight with all 4 ranks, or go for a 5x8 and hope to tie stuff up, if you choose to ambush do 4 units of 10 without the spears and ambush 2 of them. Toss in a few chariots to protect your flanks and you got a melee force that can actually do damage to the toughest foes. I have slaughtered many of WoC armies with this base.

Additional units for some power can help out but really i dont think razorgor herds are worth the points they present a target that can't really survive ranged punishment. The centigors are terrible and you realy on them rolling good for their special drunken buff which really isn't worth the points even if you get what you want.

Minotaurs are very nice, but very pricey for what they can accomplish. Bestigors tend to be excellent at slaughering calvary and have some armour, unlike all other units in the army but its still nothing to call home about due to their price and always strikes last rule due to the great weapons.

As far as rare choices go, 2 Cygors. Why? You do not have shooting options other than ungors with shortbows who are very costly and very very bad. This will give you 2 large targets that, yes like everything else in this army cannot defend itself, however, it doubles as a stone thrower. 275 points for a stone thrower which is way over priced but it has some cool little things that help it out.

Wow just wow. Spear ungors? Ambush? Razorgor not worth it? (I bring 3 singles). Cygor? A unit of 65 gor ? And possibly the worst army? If you want info on beastmen go check out The Herdstone forums.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

@ Hargus56 i've checked out the herdstone before adn found some help but not a lot. mite try a coupl eblocks of gors with a lvl 4 and a BsB with beast banner and some bestigors and razorgors as single units.

@tooky flakes i've heard otherwise, like beastmen being a strong army for those who know how to use it properly, and the razorgors mess things up on the charge. ambush is not that good in my opinion, i've tried and ive always popped up somewhere i didnt need to be.

I've placed in tourneys with beastmen and like most armies there are ways and means of making even the lower tier lists effective, the list I'm running atm is my anti gunline list at 2k you have a scouting lore of death level 4, 2 scouting units of ten harpies, ghorgon, giant and then a block of ambushing gor and ambushing raiders with a bsb and dispel scroll in my on table blocks! I beat an experienced WE player fairly comfortably and massacred a HE Swordmaster Teclis list with it! The bray shaman spam herdstone list and minobus are other lists that I've had success with, although on cygors i loved them when the new book came out but after repeated attempts to make them work a ghorgon giant combo at 2k proved drastically superior!

I know that my friend on here made a great Dubbajab list (Brother_Malleus) getting beaten by it really was a good experience of what 'sub optimal' lists can achieve if the player has a good plan and can play the army well on the table

@TodtheSpaceMarine you sir are very correct on razorgors but they are still a squish target like most of the army. In any high profile competition with remotely experianced players you're looking at 3-5th place at best. Where as say Daemons, Dark Elves, or Lizardmen can always place 1-3 with general knowledge of how to play. I just mostly ment that beastmen are no good for newer players. Yet overall they are the bottom tier of warhammer atm. They really need a new book, ambush is their main strength and it is pretty failure. Not to mention if you compair unit stats and points to that of other armies, you arent really going to do that well. For example gors vs dwarf warriors.

Overall do not use giants unless you are playing in the ETC rule set, they are a complete waste of points in most games, with ETC though they are reduced about 150 points.

Tooky razorgor are T5 and 3 wounds, how is that squishy? Please compare to sabretusks except you are buying a better wizard hunter with more attacks and higher strength on the charge and they can also tarpit s3 blocks with that T5. They need a new book? Their book was the last book of 7th and built with 8th in mind, only 4 army books have come out since. Ambush is not their main strength it's gimmicky at best their main strength is primal fury which will be passed some 95% of the time with Ld10 and BSB rerolls among other things such as cheap gor with Ws4 and T4, and magic items such as the Herdstone and jagged dagger.

T5 can be taken down by archers, and they are fairly expensive to field a lot of them. Thus making them a good thing to shoot at with very reliable results, same way a giant is squishy, or a jabberscythe. I will give you that compaired to sabertusks they are amazing, I mean sabertusks are horrible. Primal fury is cool sure but I dont consider that a main strength since they should always have it. Look at dark elves who are significantly cheaper and have hatred all the time, as well as armour. The gimmick of ambush was an idea to put strength into, hoping for unforseen flanks and rear attacks since anything that shoots destroys them.

You take the test every combat though. Commom Hatred is just the first round. I've played several games in a day and have not failed it and there is always the chance to get frenzy as well. I racked up some 20+ combat res before when getting flanked and rear charges by Tk with my beast banner gor with AHW if I didn't have that reroll it would have been half as much.

Still no armour and almost always being hit first. You are only taking advantage of primal fury on hordes or deep rank units. Beast Banner adds a ton, nothing can argue that, specially in 60+ gor horde with characters and additional hand weapons. Theoretically though ambush if it were reliable or working how you wanted would be more powerful, since primal fury just augments what you have, and ambush brings a halt to warmachines and gun lines getting significant damage to your forces before you can get into combat if you roll semi decently. So long as the ambush deploys, you can usually always make a useful deployment for a side table edge. Ideally your opponents table edge is best but you take what you can get.

Only thing I ever ambush is something I can afford to lose, so 5 man raiders and in some cases I may do a 20man gor units, past that there is too much risk. I also recommend a look at OnceBitten's videos too here: http://www.youtube.com/user/OnceBitten360/videos?view=0 This guy is the best at battle reports and has a lot of good information and runs very effective beasts even if they are a tad out of the normal herdstone/minobus lists.

Ill give you that there is risk past 20 gor units, but with characters and BSB in it, you are pretty stable so you can go big, not to ambush though. Also consider that hordes giving that extra rank of attacks, beast banner additional hand weapons ect, 65 of them is only 545 pts, and at 2k+ thats not too shabby for one unit. Specially since lots of people fancy bigger deathstar units now days that one can toe to toe with almost anything. That and it offers significant protection for the bsb, and a bray shaman.

As far as ambushing only what you can afford to lose, I agree but I normally go with 10, but its really not a big deal so long as the smaller units are far enough away from your big units to limit the worry of a bad die roll for a LD check, I wouldnt really try and ambush 20 gors though since 5-10 will eliminate most threats since archers usually are 10-20 strong and in the rear or flank doesnt matter how many they have you're winning combat, and warmachines have 3-4 crew.

AHW or nothing, if you want shields in a Beastmen army run a 40-50 man ungor units 5 wide. A case can be made for minotaur too.

Tod,

I will second everything that Hargus56 has said. I will also recommend that you take another look at the Herdstone forums. Also, as said before OnceBitten has the BEST beastmen batreps online.

As for my recommendations:

45-50 Gor w/AHW
4+ x5 Ungor raiders with musicians
30-40 Bestigor
4x Shamans
1x BSB
1x Bestlord
1x Doombull
3+ x Razorgor's
2+ x5 Harpies
5x Minos w/AHW

This should give you a solid pool to choose a list from.

*Edited for spelling.

Great list Grix, only change I would make is Sword of Battle on the BL, as Beastmen get this for 15pts and with those extra points grab a jagged dagger for the GBS.

@Hargus56 great point! I originally had him with the +2 attack sword, but due to point constraints of having a Beastlord and a Lv GBS I had to drop points. And just must have glazed over the Sword of Battle.

kinda odd to edit it know that its been a while since typing htis but is there any other guys i could bring instead of raiders? for me they never seem to work out quite right...i've noticed that tuskgor and razorgor chariots are amazing, so i might change the raiders out for some tuskgor chariots
