I kept waiting for an expansion to be launched to show it was a viable game before jumping in. But after a year there's no sign of one.
Is it dead Jim?

On September 22nd, 2012, WizKids announced a new game with 30+ ships which will include ships from the Vulcan, Ferengi, Cardassian, Dominion, Romulan, and Federation factions. It is slated for release in January, 2013.
Course this means I'm now tempted to pick it up...
I do love me some toy space ships.

Never understood the obession with 'scale' in a space game. I mean unless you're playing with grains of rice in an empty parking lot it's pretty much a moot point.
So the ships may as well look good. Automatically Appended Next Post:

I thoguht it was the Star Fleet Battles 'setting'* but the Mongoose Call To Arms system (tweaked for Start Trek).

d I thinks the scale thing is more wanting to see how the ships literally size up to each other. At least for me being a modeller as well as a Tabletop gamer that's cerainly the case. For instance the Romulan D'derirex ship commonly seen in TNG is a lot bigger than any of the Enterprises, but you'd never tell it by the Clix game.
But yeah, new expansions for both the Starship Captains and the Star Trek Tactics games in the next four months. I'm down for the STT stuff myself.

Really? I thought they were about the same size as the "D."
If all the ships were scaled to each other, they'd have a hard time selling some of them in booster packs. Just think of it as perspective. "That Defiant's awfully close!"

More realistically, they're just icons or synthetic representations on a nifty 3d display.

@Bat. The D'deridex is at least twice the size of a Galaxy class (Enterprise D) ship. As a modeller it's kind of bummer because none of the modelling companies made in a scale normal for Star Trek ships....it was too big so it was made in a smaller scale to the norm to keep the ships about the same size.
I'll put away the modeller fu and the ST knowledge base so we can get back on topic.

Thats it for me too. I was a modeler long before a gamer. ALL my aircraft were 1:48 scale, ALL my armor was 1:35.
As far as my OCD-ish want for scale in a space game (and all mini games I play)...it just bothers me to have a miniature for the 110 meter long B'rel Class Bird of Prey being about the same size as a miniature for the 1353 meter long D'Deridex class Warbird. It would be like GW making a Land Raider to fit on a 25mm base, and telling people to pretend it was big enough to hold a squad of marines. It would be absolutely silly.
As an interesting side note, the STT Klingon Bird of Prey scales up almost perfectly with the 1:2500 scale Cadet Series models currently available from AMT. They are all snap together, but still pretty nice. Currently available are the Enterprise TOS, 1701-A, B, C, D, E. Coming in late December is a set that includes the Enterprise A, Reliant (Miranda Class), and a Klingon D-7. There are also numerous newer TNG era models (also 1:2500 scale) available in resin from other manufacturers.
For a size comparison...the STT Klingon BoP is a bit under 2 inches, the Enterprise C (Ambassador Class) model I have is over 8 inches.

Well, really, none of the Space Marine transports would have a hope in hell of actually holding what they say they can. But I sympathize, I keep trying to find 1/100 scale aircraft to go with my flames of war stuff.

People have shoved 10 Space Marines in a Rhino, admittedly by using older, generally smaller, Space Marine minis. I think the example I remember was 10 in an old-style Rhino, using Land Speeder pilots or similar. It's a tight fit, but from what I've heard, real-world APCs aren't roomy either, especially when it's 10 guys and their gear.
However, for space ships, keep in mind that the important bit is often a dot at the base of the ship. The rest is just fluff. This is to represent scale, as even Star Trek combats tend to be at long ranges. So that's why I suggested it should be considered the equivalent of an icon on a strategic display, or perhaps a synthetic view: A computer assembles the actual view and inserts known images of the ship at an exaggerated scale so they can easily be identified, even though the real ship would be minuscule.
I can understand the scale concerns. I generally do like it if classes-of-ships are the same, but it's not a killer for me. i'd rather deal with weird scales than deal with a game where the rules are based on a 'point' but the minis range in size from normal to ridiculously huge, so big that they cause problems. The latter could be a problem in Mongoose's older B5: ACTA, which had some huge minis at the end of it's run.

I think its dead... I knew only a couple people who even bought 1 booster and the concensus was that the scale was too off. I think most of us expected a level of effort more similar to what FFG gave the Star Wars X-wing game... at least scale wise. No one was expecting perfection especially with how much the shows were inconsistent, but these were a bit of a let down.
The Bird of Prey for example, is suppose to be the smallest Klingon ship but is physically the largest klingon model. I wasn't expecting perfection, but there should have been at least some consistency with general relations. Ships like the Enterprise D, is suppose to be a large ship, and Wizkids has larger base sizes for larger miniatures and should have made those larger ships on them. Lazy effort doesn't get my money.

Explained on the Star Trek wiki, Memory Alpha...there are 2 different BoP classes...the scout size B'rel Class (listed as 110 meters long), and the K'Vort Class Battlecruiser (no length listed). The B'rel is what most would call the "real" BoP. The K'vort class may have only been mentioned by name in the episode "Yesterdays Enterprise"...which being an alternate reality episode some variance is acceptable.
However, all in all Star Trek does have a bad record of scaling their ships on the screen. Automatically Appended Next Post: aka_mythos wrote:I think its dead... Agreed on all points. Some effort at scale would have been nice. I think the reason they didnt do it was the tie-in with the board game, which required the restricting of model size. It would have been much better if they had been Clix only, and took advantage of the available base sizes.
