It's been said by a lot of people up here that the only thing stopping them playing Warmachine/Hordes is the other players.
The local wm/h players poo-poo EVERYTHING that isn't a PP game, with the same kind of one-eyed fanboyish fanaticism of the evangelical convert (none so devout as a convert). They all used to be GW players (and espoused the same line about GW being the bestest at everything in the gaming hobby when they played it).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

Interesting responses to be sure.
I think one of the reasons I enjoy playing at home far more is due to me not actually looking for a community to fit into. Many of my friends are already gamers, and sure, I bonded with some over gaming but many others were bonded with over other things; music, philosophy, general dispositions, faith, etc. etc. In other words, the only people I game with are close friends first, and then 'gamer friends' second.
And because I tend to be a game evangelist (boardgames primarily), even my friends who aren't 'game-centered' have come to enjoy playing games when they otherwise never would have.

Well I am in the middle on it, I had a friends house I used to play at and it was great. I found a great store and it rocked. Moved and found another great store. Moved this time and now I have yet to find awesomeness, So now I want to play at home.

The last time I went to the game store, I wanted to go to the Gap next door and buy some sweaters and jeans. I liked playing in the store, but I never packed everything I needed, and there was no place to sit. I guess chairs are too american. It's usually easy to find a pick-up game, but if you play at someone's house, it's more controlled, and you don't have to worry about people bothering you. I don't like people's houses though. They always smell funny.

My friends and I play at my FLGS due to them having some cracking good tables to play on and it has a great atmosphere.
Also none of us have the space or terrain to game at home. My brother and I are the closest - he has a modular board he's made himself, but the only terrain he has is the GW crater set and a home made building. I have a battlemat and some trestle tables, and a fair mount of terrain - Skyshield, a building, some forests, and a bunch of terrain I'm in the middle of making. Both of us lack the space to set th table up and play, however.
So we game at the store. Lots of tables, boatloads of terrain, friendly staff, food service, and the usual people at the store gaming is refreshingly free of kiddies. One of the most mature groups of gamers I've come across. Everyone plays a wide range of games, and there's very little, if any, malice towards people playing a game someone dislikes. I've seen a super competitive Warmahordes game played next to a 40k game with players from both talking and laughing with each other. The only gamers I've seen that tend to avoid others tend to be the CCG players avoiding the wargamers.
Though the atmosphere is very much fostered by the staff, who all play a variety of games, both mainstream and obscure, and get involved with setting up huge tournaments, leagues and group games.

In some aspects, I do enjoy my LGS more than playing at home, but there is things that put me off. One of these things was my DV Rulebook being stolen, and once when a guy of around 16 started to watch our game, fair enough. However he started to try and give me his terminators which I said I didn't need, then he went to the edge of the table and started placing his models on it, hiding them behind scenery so we couldn't see them. Eventually he left. Yes, it was a harmless occurrence, but it was strange seeing this 100% silent guy invite himself into our game without even making a sound...

I do lurk the regional "Find a Game" thread but most people would rather meet at a store. Which is totally understandable, because there is the potential for axe murder and various other unspeakable outcomes. But honestly I would rather screen potential gamers and stay out of the store.
See, when playing and getting to know new people, I'd much rather play at a store. With people I've known for years etc, home is my preferred venue.

Gaming, I prefer at home because:
-larger table
-less time sensitive
-many, many snack breaks
-don't have to think about other customers when talking
Painting, I prefer at the store because:
-I get gak done (no distractions)
-C&C/
-have a nice chat while doing it
-run out of paint? No problem!

I've played 40k in a game store all of twice. It was OK, but there were a lot of loud and young yugio players running around, or whatever card game was popular at the time.
I prefer to play at home for a lot of the reasons listed here. It's spurred me on to make new terrain for my table, and I can have shots of bourbon to console me for all of my lost and mutilated marines.

Most of the FLGS are kids, and at the venerable age of 28 I don't have the patience for them a lot of times. That said, it's nice to be able to get up to the store and play someone outside of my normal group of 2-3 opponents. Gives me a chance to get outside of our little echo chamber and see how other people play the game, even if it's not always up to par. It's always too loud and distracting to get any painting done up there also.
That being said, I usually prefer playing at home. Beer is always nice, and I have a good table and a decent amount of terrain, so there's always a fresh board to play on.

With my gaming group all working mids with me, we always played at my house. We would play from 4pm till about 6am. large battles took forever because we would go in beer and hotdog runs at 1 in the morning. Loved playing every other day. made a 4x8 gaming table, terrain, ect. Unfortunitly I got pulled off working mids and the gaming group kinda died. I play at the local store now because its the only place to play, not knowing people sucked because I would bring my army and my laptop and wait for like 3 hours for a game before giving up and going home. im lucky to get 1 game every 3 weeks now, not for lack of trying though.

When I was in Germany, my gaming options were quite good. The unit I was in had myself and 3 other 40k-ers in it (and literally 60% played fething WoW) My buddy's battalion had 8 40k-ers, so I joined in with them on their campaign and everything else, it was great.
I have gotten one game in a store in Germany, and 3 since being back in the US... and I have to say I much prefer gaming in a "home" setting. It's more comfy, the people are generally better (as you usually know them in some manner prior to invites to the crib)... Basically, everything just seems better.
Ironically, of all the games I've gotten at home, compared to the ones at the store, rules disputes are always much, much more tame at home... I attribute this to no 3rd parties joining into the arguments, trying to "help" the parties out.

Generally I don't game in games stores, be it GW or my FLGS, I play at a local games club held in a church hall. Space for a group of friends enjoying playing the games we want to play without the general public bugging us.
The one exception to playing in games stores is playing at Warhammer World, that place is great. Awesome atmosphere with great gaming tables and great food & drink in Bugmans Bar. It can take up to 2 hours traveling to get there but I've been a few times, including today, and we've reserved a table for early in the new year.

That's a good thing about my LGS- Most of the guys there are at least late teens, and it's usually quite quiet (especially around 5:00 onwards (especially on a sunday), then it's quite often just me and the manager).

I've always preferred playing at home vs stores. I've played at some great stores over the years, but not having to worry about the place closing, no worry about who may or may not walk in(there's always that ONE guy, eh?), not having to worry about what you're saying(I mean from a perspective of things you can't say around children), and having access to whatever you want whenever you want it puts home play miles ahead.
Plus, you can generally get away with doing the crazy stuff without anyone commenting on how you're doing it wrong or asking about why you brought x instead of y and that sort of thing.

I personally prefer playing at home as I have a bit more comfort and ease of use with everything there like food and drinks and not needing to run around to different stores to get it.
But, since I basically have no friends who play, I am forced to go to my FLGS just to game at all.

empty a bottle of Freebreze on the gamers. I've never understood how gaming can generate such a high concentration of people in a single locale that all seem to be deathly afraid of using soap.
Between old food and stale unwashed gamer sweat the stores often reek worse than a gym, it's horrible.

Last few times I've gone into the store hoping to catch a game I got there too late and no one else was playing anymore. The perils of having small kids - you don't make it out until they are in bed.

I mostly play at the FLGS, but I would prefer to play more at home.
I do not want to exclusively play at home, just more often. Inviting friends to your home helps to build a stronger, more intimate relationship that goes beyond one or two common interests.
Over the years I have found that relationships that are based principally on playing at a FLGS take much longer to develop into lasting friendships.
Now that I own my own home, have multiple tables, and have constructed a variety of terrain, I have the means to host gaming at my house, and when I have done so it has always been a more rewarding experience than playing at the FLGS.
As others have said, there are perks to playing at one's home (such as beer ), and there are perks to playing at a club or store. But for me, the choice to play at home is mostly about the opportunity to develop more significant relationships with my gaming friends and acquaintances.

There's also the added plus, that from my experience, rules arguments are much more civil in a home setting. I don't think it's the whole "I'm in someone else's house, and I don't want to be kicked out" but more a "hey, there's no sidebar group watching us, so we can figure this out at our own pace, have a beer and get the game rolling again"
