This may have already been asked, and if so, I apologize.

BRB, p. 51, states that any model not specifically stated as having a weapon with the Melee type is treated as having a CCW.

The Chaos Codex says you can upgrade CSMs to have a CCW for 2pts each.

If I choose not to do so, doesn't that mean they're a CSM not specifically stated as having a Melee weapon, and therefore they have a CCW? Is there a point to giving them a CCW (aside from also giving them a bolt pistol, thus giving them two attacks)?

They already have a CCW, their pistol. So no they don't already have a regular CCW.

That rule only applies if a model doesn't have any type of melee weapon, but just about every model in the game does. Its more of a clarification that everyone can fight in melee.

An extra CCW would give you +1 attack, because you would have the bolt pistol + another weapon, therefore having 2 attacks.

So yah, those extra points if you are willing to pay them is for them to be better at close combats, while retaining their awesome boltergun capabilities

CSM 10k points
IG 3k points
Orks 2k points
WoC 3.5k points

Is there an exception to noise marines?
Their champion is stated with 2 attacks, but there's no close combat weapon (champion only) in their wargear list, he only has a boltpistol for close combat?

So if I want a power sword for my noise champion without replacing his bolt pistol, I need to give him extra ccw and replace that one?

Well the champion can swap his bolter for a ccw for free....

It's not the size of the blade, it's how you use it.

Oh, Yeah my bad, didn't see that one. Though extra ccw is just one point.
But what about his stats then? He's the only champion without a standard free close combat weapon but he still has 2 attacks, weird?

Not at all; you are under the misconception that the number of attacks in the stat lines includes bonuses from 2 CCW. It doesnt.

A champion has A2 because he is just better than a nomral frunt with A1. Thats it. If you give him two close combat weapons, such as BP & Chainsword, he gains an attack to take him to A3

Plague Champions come with two close combat weapons, a bolt pistol and a plague knife. So they wouldn't need to buy an extra CCW to get +1 attack, in fact, it would serve no purpose.

Yeah, I was totally mistaken by the fact the wargear isn't included in the profile, unless specifically stated. But I also noticed noise champions are the only ones not to come with a free close combat weapon. I could replace their bolter with a power sword to get +1 attack (pistol + power sword), but if I would like to keep the range from the bolter, I'm left with replacing the pistol, not earning me an extra attack :/ That's where all my confusion started :p + the fact that I missed the part in the rulebook where they say 2 or more ccw will give you an extra attack ^^ I tought you got +1 for every ccw >.<

I've found a thread on this one, I hope it'll be in de faq/errata.
Anyways I'm giving him an extra ccw to replace with a power sword, I'm sure no opponent will be mad at me if I explained it =)

No, it is a trade off - range or extra attack.

You may have been confused with Walkers, which DO get a bonus atack for every additional CCW

If you have a bolt pistol as your CCW, or if you choose to make all of your attacks in CC with the bolt pistol, does that mean that your CC attacks are at AP 5?

No. Pistols are treated as generic CCWs in Assault with no profile - Pg. 51.

I wish pistols got to use their strength and AP in close combat. It would make plasma pistols worth buying. As is there is almost no reason to ever buy one.

Would make imperial guard sergeants the most vicious, terminator slaying, enemies ever. Would be ridiculously over powered.

I liked the solution given in the Pancake Edition (the supposed 6th edition leak from ages ago), where models could substitute all of their profile attacks for a single pistol attack in combat, with charge bonuses added. Some pistols weren't as good as in shooting (plasma pistols were just Rending rather than AP2 but still had Gets Hot), but it was a cool idea.

But no, as it stands in the actual rules, pistols are just treated as a normal close combat weapon in assault (RB p52).

One shot at bs3 s7 ap2? I think they would still be significantly worse than any space marine with a power axe or fist.

2 shots. If you pay for it...

You were talking about using them in combat. That's 3 hits at Str7 AP2 (4 on charge), before a terminator can strike. All at a fraction of the cost of a space marine with power axe (and much more effective).

had a house rule for using pistols str & AP in combat. Basically you half your bs rounding down and any rolls of 1 hit a friendly model (TL- lets you roll again but you still hit a friendly model or 2 if very unlucky)
