I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.

kharn costs more and he uses your warlord trait to get hatred. That means you miss out your chance to get PE SM or D3 infiltrate

The problem with the Dark Apostle is not really a bad choice - but he suffers from how good the other HQ choices are.

A Sorcerer provides more useful buffs while the Lord provides the fearless benefit and has a much better statline (and is cheaper). The named HQ's are all unique in their own way.

I think the real use for a Dark Apostle is to anchor a cultist heavy army. Otherwise, he languishes in comparison.

he really is kinda sad compared to a chaos lord, who with a power weapon and sigil is still cheaper. Sure he doesnt give hatred or boon rerolls but he has more wounds, more attacks, better init, better WS, and can unlock cult troops. He can also choose his power weapon.

I run a Khornate Dark Apostle with the Axe of Blind Fury with 35 khornate cultists.

I also have Ahriman in my list who has a pretty good chance at getting the invisibility power.

So far my cultist blob has been a big invisible horde who have taken down terminators, a Dreadnought, and a horde of ork boyz. They also survived a hail of fire from an IG footline and didn't run away.

The Dark Apostle himself with the Axe of Blind fury killed 5 nobz in one round of CC when the nobz charged him. 2 A base, +1 Counter-attack, +1 pistol/CCW, +2-6 attacks from the deamon weapon = 4 to 10 attacks with reroll to hits, S6, ap 2, and he had the boon that gave him insta-kill!

The hatred and fearless benefits he gives the cultists have been invaluable to me.

giving a model AoBF when he already has a power weapon is a waste. Also he only has 2 wounds, WS5, 3+ save and init4. As many lords are running around with WS6, init5, and a lightning claw you end up with problems. He will get hit on 3s, reroll to wound and then default down to your 4++. You might not even get to strike with your axe. A Chaos lord does this job just as well against most armies for less and with more surviability and +1 init.

Moronic Nonsense, you do realise that a simple Khorne lord with the axe and TDA would get better results for a lower price right?

The Dark Apostole is there to make Cultist armies viable. And in that respect, he does work really well, and is practically essential for his leadership bubble. Note though that means an army that is running more than one 35 blob. Probably something like 3-4 blobs, to saturate your opponent with 115 bodies or more. It actually works pretty well.

In any list with only one blob squad, it's much better to put any other HQ in there. Generally Sorcs for a ranged blob, Lords for an assaulty one.

eh, I see your point. I'll try out the khorne lord this weekend instead of the Dark Apostle. I think the only thing I'm going to miss is the zealot rule which gives fearless and hatred to the whole squad.
but for a cheaper cost and better stats, I think it might be worth giving up that special rule.

Could you not throw the dark apostel and some possessed in a landraider? It seems like it could work very well in my eyes.

Dark Apostel gives re-roll. Possessed kick ass in combat. And the landraider gets them there.

Compared to a sorcerer, the Dark Apostle is pretty weak. I can't find a spot for him in my army. It's a shame, because i like the IDEA of them. I just don't like the execution.

I think they would work quite well in a psuedo gunline army. ^ inch bubble is actually quite nice, and would cut down on the need for VOTLW which while cheap can add up(especially nice for oblits going up to 10 instead of 9). Combined with a decent sized chaos marines unit could work well.

Also I could see just a crazy biker deathstar with a dark apostle in it. MOS 10 man biker unit with FNP(on biker sergeant for snipage protection) and dark apostle(for challenge protection, fearless, and hatred, who is also modeled as doom rider) just charging up the field shooting away, and then charging what it can.

People who stopped buying GW but wont stop bitching about it are the vegans of warhammer

except the DA cannot take a bike, jump pack, or steed to keep up with the bikers. Way to Kelly it!

except that the boon is almost never worth 10 points, even with the reroll.
and possessed suck in combat, 26 points a model and no more attacks than a 13 point CSM.
and the DA, 9 possessed, and the land raider cost 600 points, consume a HS, Elite, HQ and scare no one.

I love the IDEA of him too, but the reality is that he is best used as a cheap chaos lord instead of a DA.
