Hello DakkaDakka. I kind of got that bug to start a new army and I'm looking into eldar and dark eldar after watching a few battle reports. I've read the 1d4chan tactics page on both of them but it makes no mention of the quality of the battleforces for each faction. I'm the type of person who wants the most bang for his buck and I want to take the best route to get a good TAC army for the least amount of time and money. I don't see many Eldar or Dark Eldar threads on the forums so I thought I'd ask here and get some other players experience. I'd probably slowly build up to 1500 points of one then grab some other units of the other to mix in as allies. I would just go through the codices but they're in the mail and won't be here until after the new year.

Are the units in each box set viable in 6th and capable of putting me on the right path to make a decent army?
Are there any conversions, kitbashing, or just buying bits or upgrade sprues to get more bang for my buck?
What HQ to get?

Give me some ideas and tips you've got from your own experience with the space elves of the 41st millenia.

DE box is great. You can use it all in 6th edition. The bikes are a nice add to it. Wyches are more limited with the nerf to assaulty armies. But have haywire grenades which make them cheaper tank hunters if you put them in a transport

What would be a good way to expand on the DE battleforce?

The Eldar box is decent. It doesn't have any bad choices in it. Your saving about $20 overall with it. Purchase a Farseer, and you've got a pretty solid 500pt army.

Getting 2 Battleforces is a very solid start, after that obviously get an HQ. Picking the HQ determines what direction you need to expand. Personally, my lists are Reaver and Hellion based, so my expansions are more reavers, a few boxes of Hellions and Venoms, then deciding what to do with Heavy slots.

Aegis Defense Lines are a good addition too.

Basically a good way to expand the battleforce is to get another battleforce and an HQ.

Sometimes, you just gotta take something cause the model is freakin cool...

I would expand the DE battleforce with 2 Venoms (for the Wyches) and an HQ, either convert or buy Baron Sathonyx, or get a Haemy (or Archon, if you want to start at a higher points limit). Rinse and repeat, add Ravagers/Razorwings and you're well on the way to building a great DE army.

The Eldar Battleforce absolutely needs another Battleforce, 5 DA aren't that good, and Guardians aren't very competitive with their pathetic range and poor CC skills. However, if you bundle two and add a Farseer, it's a solid foundation.

Is Kharn a Commissar that kills enemies or are Commissars Kharn wannabe's who don't have the balls to kill enemies?

Eldar Battleforce isn't very effective; Dark Eldar is much better. Add additional transports and more mobile things, you've got a solid Dark Eldar army right there.

DE definatly. I personally got 2 of them and it worked out well. wyches are squishy when not in cc so transports are very effective. I personally like the archon for hq because of ws and bs 7 so I can throw him in with kabalites or with wyches and he will always auto hit and take gak out. upgrades get pricy though. transports and warriors are very important for competitive lists

Awesome. Thanks for all the responses. I might have to do a DE army with some Eldar allies. I really like the model of the wraithlord and I hear fire prisms are amazing. Throw in an Autarch or w/e the psyker HQ is and it would seem to be a pretty good army. Eldar seem to have a lot of cool specialist units that could make for some fun play styles or just fun 1 turn shenanigans.

That makes a lot of sense, thanks.
