Games Workshop Information: Change in Glues and New Bundles
This bit of info comes from a weekly newsletter from Games Workshop. While there is not much that is interesting for us, and a lot that is internal stuff that we don't need to post, there are some interesting bits to check out.

This comes to us via our secret squirrel
Change of formula to our Plastic glues
As you know, we are always seeking ways to improve all of our products all of the time. To improve the quality of our Plastic Glue Thick and Plastic Glue Thin (Polystyrene cement) we have changed the formula.

All Plastic glue arriving in your orders from now on will be the re-formulated glue.

I look forward to the associated 20% price adjustment that will no-doubt accompany this new formula.

That's okay - I'm sure it's at least 20% less likely to make your models fall to pieces. And if they ever fix Finecast, I'm sure they can justify the price increase based on all the extra restic they're using now that the models aren't full of holes.

Well, i like how there is no admission that their glue had issues, it is just their constant striving for improvement at work.
I have some of their thin plastic glue here and it is rubbish, every thing ive glued has come apart at some stage. Its ruined my models and given me more work to do.
I just wish they had the face to at least admit their glue is crap. Normally I use Tamiya glue which i have never had issue with.
btw I only bought their glue because it was all that was available with the time I had to put my models together, and I wont be going back, improved formula or not.

The nearest model shop to me only sells GW branded poly cement. I still don't buy it.

Humbrol is much better and FAR easier to use.

I've used GW Super Glue (and several other brands, mind you) and quite liked it. Their plastic glue...isn't the greatest, but it does stick your models together forever if you want that. I only ever use super glue nowadays.

Can someone help me out, I'm genuinely confused here. Why wouldn't I want my models stuck together forever?

I used quite a bit of GW plastic glue when I played fantasy, and the nigh-unbreakable nature of the bond on the GW plastics was pretty sweet.

Just trying to understand what people's beef is with it?

I sometimes buy GW models on ebay for conversion purposes, its far cheaper than buying a new box and wasting 70% of the bits. When things have been smothered in GW's plastic glue not only is it extremely hard to remove bits, they also have the detail obliterated usually due to over zealous application.

That's less a problem with the glue and more the people who built it not knowing what they're doing.

If you ever want to do a weapon swap, or update a mini when a new codex comes out, not having everything permanent is nice (in concept) For example, I have 10 assault marines. When I assembled them you could have 2 plasma pistols in a 5 man unit for only 5 points each. Under the current codex, I can only field 1 special per 5, pistol prices went up, and flamers were added as an option. I used plastic cement. So when I went to update them, it took a careful time with a hobby knife to remove arms, and a lot of parts were destroyed in the process. If I had used super glue, a quick trip to the freezer and the arms would snap right off, no muss, no fuss.

I still like plastic cement, as I don't like arms snapping off mid battle. But I can see the allure.

Nevelon, interesting! However, I don't think I've ever snapped off an arm / bit to upgrade a model (and particularly won't want to do that now that I'm about to start painting my hoard again...)

I remember really liking that long set time- gave me a chance to get things right! However, I can definitely see wanting a faster set time. The bond I didn't think was brittle, though- I never had anything break off my models glued with it.

It was extreme, though- there's no way those parts were coming apart... like ever.

GW's glue changed a couple years ago. I used to love their old glue - then they switched to the 4 different varieties of glue and I found that it didn't really work for anything. I was building a Kill Team and I keep finding heads and shoulder pads in various places....

I switched to Gorilla Glue Super Glue. Won't be going back.

I also use gorilla brand super glue, but didn't for GW plastics (just for everything else). It also has a long set time, though.

I stopped using the GW glue when they switched to the Thin with the brush applicator. Any more I use Gorilla Super Glue with the blue cap.

I have to think GW reformulated from the time of your experience. I say this as you said you used the glue in the past on your fantasy models. I have used the GW glue for some time as well as its right there when I buy models and continued to until the "last" batch. Fail all around. Could be why the new formula is in order. Just saying

In its current formula, I'll only use it in an emergency and if I have time to hold pieces together for an awkward amount of time.

Bingo! This is my experience as well.

A fine dusting of baking soda on the joins speeds up the bond by quite a lot. It needs to be very fine though or it will make the bond brittle.

Using plastic glue makes things such as rebasing and weapon swaps very difficult and sometimes damaging to the miniature. Also, if a model breaks with super glue, it's the glue bond that breaks. If it breaks with plastic glue, since it melts the plastic together it's not necessarily where the glue was applied, but some point just beyond there wherever the plastic is weakest.

Byte, you could well be right! I think it was 2 years ago that I was using it heavily (and haven't since, since I've moved on from buying GW plastics... and thus didn't need the plastic glue).

Mostly, on my phone.

I am somewhat allergic to most plastic glues. Splitting headaches etc. I shall be interested to see what this new stuff is like.

I use loctite super glue. 3 bucks at home depo.

Works fine, sets VERY quickly, doesn't smell, and usually lasts for a very long time.

Before that I used the thin GW plastic glue. 5 to 10 minute set times, parts would shift, and it stinks to high heaven.

I do not miss GW glue in the slightest.

I use the same and have same experiences with current GW glue. Except I use the Loctite "Professional Liquid" formula.

Im staggered why people would pay GW prices for glue (PVA particularly is insane) which is substandard when market leaders like Loctite are cheaper. Besides all my Superglues only last a while before they clog up and solidfy. Makes sense to spend as little as possible each time.
