How big is the defense line? Is it possible to claim some sort of cover from it for the flying boats, or are they to short?

Flying boats?... like the DE ships or the necron barges?, if so iirc those vehicles are mounted on those flying bases a good distance above the table which won't probably allow the ADL to cover 25% of the actual model

Its about 1"-1.5" tall, depending on where in the line.
Realistically, Dark Eldar and Eldar won't be getting a cover save from it due to their stands. Of course it all depends on the exact situation. Get down to look and see if the model is covered.

I would say not even with the 25 behind them (not sure it would be covered) its kinda cheaty face because its well known they are skimmers. Also, I'd rather keep them outside of it for when they get blown up (damn av10 open top) and preventing hurting other units behind ADL

In the vast majority of situations imaginable, the ADL will not be able to provide cover for anything on a skimmer stand. As stated earlier, its 1"-1.5" tall, and most skimmer bases are at least that tall, plus the actual model height.

Does this take into account if you use the shorter of the two flying stand options?
Will people hate you if you made the stand even shorter?

The smaller Tau boats can (piranha and tetra) as they are very, very low (lower then a rhino even on the stand), but most boats cant, even using the smaller flying stand. they just tend to be so damn big that the fact you lowered it a bit is not enough.

ADL is a 4+. Vehicles get the same cover save as infantry.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

A leman russ can get a cover save even with it's monstrous size. However, that's because there's actual tank beneath the line.
A skimmer of any type would be sketchy to me.
Besides, don't most DE vehicles have an invuln save already?

Only if they buy Flicker Fields, which they will. Plus the natural 5+ cover for moving.
Skimmers will find the ADL tough to get cover from, but its not impossable.

Neither my Venoms or Raiders are remotely obscured by the ADL. They're both on the shorter skimmer stands as well. All you have to do with skimmers is move 1 inch and you get your 5+ cover, 4+ if you turbo boost.

Options?
Every skimmer ive seen came with 1 base and 1 stick for the base. My deffkoptas only have the 1 option to be stupid high in the air for a skimmer....kinda surprised they arent considered flying (not sure if that would be good or bad though).
The stand isnt considered part of the model because its only there to put it in the air. Therefore since the bottom of the vehicle is already an inch or so above the ground, taking off the very bottom edge of the vehicle wouldnt be enough to be 25% unless that is one flat as hell vehicle.

Yes, Skimmer stands (the clear large plastic base) comes with two sticks, one smaller and one a little longer. Gargoyles and such have the small flying base and only have one size stick. Obviously big fliers, like Vendettas and the like, just have the big-ass flying stand.

The shorter stand wouldn't be short enough to hide the skimmers. And cutting the stand down wouldn't really be a good thing to do, since you're rigging your model just to get an advantage.
Is it really hard to hide DE skimmers? I use Tau skimmers. Piranha and Tetras are easy enough to hide. Devil fish and Hammerheads are huge, but not impossible to hide behind something.
|
I'm expecting an Imperial Knights supplement dedicated to GW's loyalist apologetics. Codex: White Knights "In the grim dark future, everything is fine."
"The argument is that we have to do this or we will, bit by bit,
lose everything that we hold dear, everything that keeps the business going. Our crops will wither, our children will die piteous
deaths and the sun will be swept from the sky."

If you have a terrain setup following the GW guidelines, you should be able to hide Venoms and to some extent Raiders/Ravagers fairly easy. Just not behind an Aegis.

Last night I was using an annihilation barge, and it was not able to get 25% behind the ADL. I doubt an DE skimmer could.
The ADL is for your foot warriors, not skimmers.
