Hey all, I have been playing 40k for a while now and I would like to Fantasy. What army would be a good starter army, in your opinion? I currently play Blood Angels in 40k.

Thanks!

Depends what your priorities are really. If money is an issue, then skaven or high elves are the cheap way in with the starter box. Horde (O&G/Skaven), or elite (high elves/WOC)? low model count if painting is an issue (Ogres)?

Fantasy is really balanced, not anything like 40k with its imbalance issues, play the one you like the look of most or pick 1-3 and post it and we can tell you which is more beginner friendly.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

I kinda wanna play a fun army, with lots of flexibility. I would say my favorite 3 armies would be High Elves, WOC, Empire. (Not necessarily in that order)

The cheapest army is Ogres. Followed by Warriors of Chaos. The rest really depends on the specific build you make.

As for which army to start with, don't do Wood Elves or Beastmen. All the other armies would be fine for a beginner.

Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

I recently picked up a bunch of Tzeentch Daemons for 40k and I've been thinking of using them to try out Fanatasy also. I know Daemons are supposed to be awesome, but how do you think a mono-Tzeentch is?

Eldar shenanigans are the best shenanigans!

Tzeentch horrors are funny because the larger your block of horrors the higher their wizard level gets. So a horde of say 40 is a level 4 wizard. Unfortunately horrors kinda fall apart once they get into melee. Flamers got nerfed a bit with the WD Daemon update and Screamers got better (IMO). I'd wait for the new DoC book before deciding on daemons though.

Empire is probably the best for a beginner as they do everything

I would suggest one of the newer books as they are a bit easier to decipher than one of the 7th edition books.

SKaven has an 11 page FAQ you really don't wanna go there at first

8000 Dark Angels (No primaris)
10000 Lizardmen (Fantasy I miss you)
3000 High Elves
4000 Kel'shan Ta'u

I would say Warriors of Chaos are fine for a beginner while they dont have a great presence in the shooting phase they can do some pretty mean things with magic (but this is just in theory I aint had a game with the new book yet)

WoC also offers flexibility to branch out into other armies if you go the monstrous infantry route.

It remains to be seen if the new book is fun to play.

If you are after fun I'd suggest Ogres or Orcs and Goblins.

City of Angels

You play Blood Angels which are assault dominant, that is WoC. High Elves are about pushing magic (think Eldar). Empire is like Imperial Guard, strong shooting and numbers but better in assault than IG.

Just my thoughts on the subject to a fellow 40K player (I started with Chaos Marines in 3rd then got into fantasy which I prefer although I play both systems).

WFB armies: Wood elves, Bretonnia, Daemons of Chaos (Tzeentch), Dwarfs & Orcs 'n Goblins
40K armies: Black Legion, Necrons, & Craftworld Iyanden

I'm breaking in to fantasy with Beastmen and I see nothing wrong with it. I would avoid Wood Elves / Tomb Kings to start with.

If you already play 40K I think Daemons might be a good choice because of course you can also play 40K with them if you decide you don't like fantasy at least you wouldn't be wasting your money/time. Since they are rumored to have a new book in March though I might wait 2 weeks to jump into them.

Thats more because Beastmen and Wood Elves are harder(in the case of WEs very hard) to get a feel for and are under powered.

This is of course a secondary consideration for which army you like the best. If you really like your army the power of the book won't matter.

My reccomendation was based on what armies are doing well. Nobody wants to have a bad army.

You can still win with beastmen, but its an uphill battle. Not nearly as bad as wood elves though.

QFT. The same goes for bretonnians and dwarfs. They have an interesting and particularly ...different playstyle, it just takes longer to learn.

May your chest inspire the hopes and dreams of millions.
May your arm girth frighten the elderly, slow moving adults and very small children.
May your gains be plentiful.
Go forth and LIFT.

Uhm...if learning how to play dwarfs takes you a lot of time, you got...problems

Dwarfs are the, by far, easiest army to learn. Warmachine spam, hide in corner, roll dice. Gets really boring really soon thus can't recommend starting as dwarfs.

I'd say OnG and Empire are a good idea. Both have 8th codices and are very versatile giving you lots of different options for your army list.

WoC and Empire are quite forgiving armies, if you want a challenge go brettonians

I dont like the idea of a best starting army. It really depends on your preferences.

Now there are some more simple to play tgmhan others, but I find that part of what makes it fun is learning the lore and play style of an army.

Empire and Orcs and Goblins are new, and have a very great number of possible builds. These may help you decide what you want to focous on more though

Empire, Dwarfs, High elves, Lizardmen and Chaos Warriors are fine starting armies. So are Orcs and goblins.

The ones you should stay clear of is
Vampire (to many mechanics),
Tomb Kings (the same),
Skaven (11 page errata),
Beastmen (very unpopular army and hard to play),
Brettonnia (gimmicky and hard to win with)
Wood elves (ooold army book, hard to win with and gimmicky)
Chaos dwarves (Insanely expensive FW only)
Ogre Kingdoms (I find them gimmicky with small units of big monsters)

When I got started I played Warriors of Chaos, and they served me pretty well. Because you can play them pretty elite, they're got a somewhat low buy-in point, which is good for a new army.

You are a man of fine taste! But as a seasoned Beastmen player I would never recommend them as a starter army. But if one feels up for the challenge it will certainly provide large amounts of learning.

I would go with either WoC or High Elf's for a starter army due to the fact that you do not need waste amount of troops, nor do they play badly.
