Greetings, Dakka monkeys.

It's been some time since I wrote up a battle report; it's actually been some time since I've been to a tournament. However, back by popular demand (not really), the Fists have returned!

I'm headed to a three game tournament on Saturday and thought I'd get the 'ol internet juices flowing by posting my list and a few quick pics. So on to the main event:

Lysander
Libby (nullzone & gate)
5 x TH/SS termies
2 x Riflemen dreads
3 x 10 man tac squads in rhinos; all with lascannons, two with meltaguns and combi-meltas and one with plasma and combi-plasma
3 x Bolter attack bikes
2 x Vindicators
TFC w/tech marine
ADL w/quad gun

So yes, I'm running mech; OH NOES! So please, everyone tell me how much my list sucks and how badly I'm going to get thrashed. Running mech in 6th edition and only using six scoring units? Blasphemy! Seriously, let me have it, I thrive on abuse.

While you're coming up with new and amazing ways to insult me and my horrible list, let me give you a little background information. I've never been to this store, so I have no idea what the meta is like. I haven't played in a tournament since October, so I'm pretty rusty. Do I think I'll win the whole thing? Meh, probably not. But who knows, I could surprise somebody.

Anyway, here are a few pics to look at until I get around to actually writing the reports. These may look familiar to my three fans.

That's right, go ahead and drool, monkeys.

Indeed. However, I should amend the original post to accurately reflect that. I think I will.

That's actually my "spare" kitchen table, but yes, it is mustard yellow. I was going to grab my display board and put everything on it to take pics, but something came up and I didn't do it. And when I say something came up, what I mean is I'm lazy

Meh, its not fully mecced - and I dont mean that as a criticism - just from your original musings
How are you going to run the termie/Lys unit?
Slogging them or DSing or backline support?
No LR /pod as delivery is interesting.

Whats the plan for the bolter bikes - lacking a bit of killing power imho, late game boost obj capping?

What armies will you face off against?

Great paintjob btw.

The terminators are there for flexibility. How you ask? They can hang back as counterattack. They can deepstrike as a disruption unit. Usually I run them with the libby and just gate them where needed. Most people use LRs, but they're just asking for a melta (bomb or gun) to the face. And with the new vehicle combat rules, monstrous creatures (and meltabombs) make LRs cry.

I was running Belial with a DW squad until the new codex hit and the DW got nerfed. I needed a new beatstick/counterattack/asspain unit, and the vanilla termies are cheaper than DW and Lysander is more bang for the buck than Belial while only being 10 pts more expensive.

True, I'm not running full mech, but I'm running more mech than most people these days. Call me old fashioned I guess...but I still think tanks are good, they just need to be used differently than in 5th.

Bolter bikes...one of the most underrated units in the SM codex. With most people running foot and the cover nerf, heavy bolters eat units. They can contest, they can shoot, they can tie things up, and the best part is the other guy usually just ignores them which lets me do anything I want with them.

Excellent question, thank you for asking.

GAME 1

So I arrived and set up my army.

It's hot, I know

I had a few minutes before we started, so I wandered about making new friends and checking out the other armies. I didn't see anything terribly frightening, except for one tyranid army. It's not that the army itself was scary, it's just that for some reason I go stupid (more so than usual) when I play bugs. I have no idea why this is, but it is.

So pairings came out, and naturally I pulled the nid list. I always like to start out a tournament with a good square nutshot.

Tyler's list (from my limited memory)
2 x flying rants (both with much shooting)
2 x tervies (both with gant tax)
2 x dakkafexes
bunch of gargoyles
2 x 2 hive guard
doom (I think; it's the one with the really big head)
ADL w/quad gun
I think that was it

Mission was hammer and anvil objectives (5)

I won the turn for side and picked the open table edge. Tyler was younger than me so I thought he could handle running back and forth across the table better than I could. I placed three objectives and Tyler two.

So before I even rolled one die, I cost myself the game. I spread the objectives out in a line on my back table edge. I should have put them in a triangle in denied flank formation. This would have forced his army to come at me from one direction instead of spreading myself out. I could have countered my objective placement by deploying better, but why stop the stupid once you've started? It's all about consistancy!

Tyler deployed his objectives right up on the line behind his ADL.

I won the roll for turn and took first turn. I wanted to start putting down the hurt as soon as possible. I put the ADL in my right corner with a squad manning the gun and a squad in the rhino. One dread center and one on the left. The TFC went up in a ruin where he could see everything. The bikes went in the middle behind Lysander, the termies and libby. I was hoping by having them in the middle I could counter his rants.

my awesome deployment

Tyler put both rants behind a building on my right and everything else hugging his ADL. He tried to seize, missed it, and it was game on.

Tyler's deployment.

TURN ONE

Spoiler:
So the first turn I managed to put a wound on one of my bikes due to difficult terrain, moved the vindies up, and shuffled around Lysander. I should have moved the termies to my right to start heading off the rants, but that would have made sense, and I don't play that way.

my movement. note the biker with the red rock; the moron that couldn't handle a trike on a hill

Shooting got me most of the gargoyles and I think a wound on a tervigon and that was pretty much it. I went after the gargoyles first because I didn't want to get tied up with a bunch of them and I honestly wasn't sure what else to shoot at.

On Tyler's turn he pooped out a squad of gants and then that tervi got constipated. His remaining gargoyles hid, psychic powers went off, the usual 'Nid stuff. His rants flew down my right side and wrecked the vindi on the right with side shots, claiming first blood. Excellent move on my part. The other rant shook my rhino behind the ADL.

TURN TWO

Spoiler:
So I needed to do something about the rants that were about to stomp me. Now I finally decided to move the termies in that direction, but I would need a 9" charge through terrain even if I could knock one down. The shaken rhino moved back from the rants. Thinking back now I should have moved forward to try to bait him into charging me which would have let the termies counter, but oh well. Funny how I think of these things after the game.

Everything else shuffled for shots. The TFC used aerial bursts to nuke a bunch of gants and I think the bikers finished them off. The shaken rhino snap fired at the rant that shot it, hit it, and knocked it down; awesome
I threw a few more shots into it but didn't do anything significant.

The termies went for the charge, but fell way short (think they got a 3).

You can't see them in this picture, but there are two hive tyrants behind that building in the top part

On Tyler's turn his rants flew right past my dumbfounded terminators, shouting obscenities as they passed by overhead. The dakkafexes moved up to draw a bead on the termies. The gargoyles started creeping up to where the rants were, no doubt with shenannigans in mind.

His shooting, the dakkafexes put 17 wounds on my termies . So I rolled 17 dice and much to our mutual surprise, saved every single one . That's why I love terminators; I roll two's all day long, but very rarely do I roll ones.

His rants landed inside my ADL and one wrecked my wounded rhino while the other shot the bejeesus out of the squad that fell out.

How did they get back here? Now you see the rhino squad,

Now you don't (failed morale. know no fear my ass)

TURN THREE

Spoiler:
For anyone that missed the first two turns, I now have two very angry rants in my backfield, so I decided two switch tactics. I would move forward with everything and hopefully what I had left in the backfield would keep him busy. So my two remaining rhinos, the termies, and the bikes pushed forward. The TFC stayed where he was cause he was really high and didn't want to carry the gun down (very heavy).

Shooting, the TFC lit up some more gants (this thing was awesome all game) and I think the bikes finished them off (also awesome the whole game). I was all over the place with my shooting so didn't accomplish much. I don't think I even shot at the rants.

I wasn't close to anything with assaults, so the termies ran forward toward the dakkafexes, who were my only real threat in front of me.

Tyler's turn, everything went to . His doom landed between my termies, my bikes and a rhino that got exploded by the HG. His rants were still in my back field playing leapfrog with the few units I still had left. His unclogged tervi pooped out a gant squad, then it clogged up. The gants and remaining gargoyles closed in on my termies.

Shooting, Doom took out my bikes but didn't hurt the termies. However, I still lost two termies when I finally rolled ones from a ton of shooting. I think one of the rants wiped a 5 man squad; not sure at this point because everything was falling over dead.

Assault, the gants and gargoyles hit my termies and killed the last terminator, leaving the libby and Lysander.

Lysander and the heroic librarian fight for their lives while the Doom looks at Marine butts...

You guys are in for a bad day...

TURN FOUR Or as I like to call it, the end...

Spoiler:
I didn't have much left to move around. My guys were being eaten at a phenomenal rate so I was rapidly losing bodies to throw into the meat grinder. My melta squad moved to get shots on Doom to hopefully take him out. My las squad form the exploded rhino didn't move so I could try a las-shot on Doom. Everything else was either dead or not moving.

The TFC and the dreads shot at the tervi on an objective, not really do much. The las missed Doom (rolled a two). One melta shot missed, the other hit, wounded, and Tyler made the save . That was it for movement and shooting. I think Doom killed a couple.

In assualt his rant finished off the last of my five man squad. The libby and Lysander squashed a few more bugs for no losses.

Pics stopped here because I didn't want to document any more of my ass kicking.

Tyler's turn, his right tervi moved up to join the Lysander assault. His tyrants moved around to be annoying. He tried to enfeeble Lysander but I made my deny the witch roll. The dakkafexes finished off the las squad.

Assault, his tervi wiffed and Lysander smacked it for a few wounds. The libby killed a few gargoyles. The game pretty much ended there.

We played one more turn even though it was pretty much over. Lysander ended up killing the tervi, who in turn exploded the remaining gants. Lysander and the libby then got shot down by the dakkafexes. Tabled on six.

Well what did I learn? I learned that for some reason I still get stupid when facing 'Nids. Tyler played very well and very smart. This was my first time using Lysander and that guy is an absolute beast. The TFC when combined with the bolter bikes (until they got killed) are incredible together. I made a lot of mistakes and Tyler took advantage of every one.

OK, so I was pretty much at the bottom of the pack at this point. I didn't score any victory points and suffered a major loss, so hopefully my next game I'd pull my head out of my ass and play like I actually knew how to play the game.

Stay tuned Fist Fans, game two coming up!

I wonder why so many Rhinos

Very good question. Allow me to educate:

For 35 pts I give my scoring units a place to hide, can move said units 18" a turn, can block enemy advancement, can block line of sight, and can tank shock. All of this for 35 points. What's not to love? Yes, rhinos only have three hit points (not hull points, hit points). Yes, they usually die by the end of the game; this has not changed from 5th edition.

People tend to focus on the negative changes and not the positive; increased movement being the greatest. One of the biggest reasons is because of all of the infantry hate out there right now. Rhinos don't care about mass STR 4 shooting and STR 5 still need to roll a six to glance.

In the third game, the rhinos saved the day. Read about that in the exciting conclusion of my tournament battle report.

When I first started playing competitively there was a 15 year old kid in the local league who was a killer. He played for a couple of years before going away to school/ROTC, and was one of the top guys in a very competitive league which regularly had 30+ guys playing. Nowadays he's an officer in the US Army commanding real tanks.

Rough start, Jesse, but good report! Looking forward to the rest.

The gun on the Aegis Line can't shoot itself. It's a Gun Emplacement, not an Emplaced Weapon like the ones built into the walls of the Bastion and Fortress of Redemption. Despite the similar names, they have different rules.
