Hi all

I have some Uncharted Seas ships I'm looking to strip and would like to know the best method. I've never stripped any resin miniatures before, only ever used Nitro Mors to strip metal.

Thanks for any help.

The standard safe stripping method is to use Simple Green. There's a guide for that somewhere here abouts... Personally, I use the same method, but instead of Simple Green, I use Super Clean. Same deal, but make sure to wear gloves! Also, you may want to check your models every 24 hours and brush whatever's peeled up off, I've heard some horror stories about Super Clean if left alone too long (weeks, usually, but better safe than sorry).

I don't know what Simple Green or Super Clean are. Are there UK equivalents?

Do you know about a product called something like "fairy spray?" The concentrated version of that should work very well. Simple Green and Super Clean are automotive degreasers. A similar product in the concentrated bottle should work for you.

I used the product you're thinking about, it's called Fairy Power Spray. you can get it from any supermarket, the only problem is is that it comes it pretty small bottles. This is what it looks like http://www.fairy-dish.co.uk/uk/fairy/product/5413149090262

it works great on metal models, plastics need a much longer soak and i had trouble getting the undercoat off for some reason, it's almost like its stained the plastic.

I've used Dettol on my Dystopian Wars ships to good success:

Soak the minis in neat dettol overnight.
Scrub with a toothbrush and more NEAT dettol
When, AND ONLY WHEN all the paint has been removed to your satisfaction should you then wash the minis in hot soapy water
(The reason is, if you try to scrub the minis with water & dettol solution/water, some unknown reaction occurs which turns the paint into a horrible sludgy sticky mess that's harder to remove than the original paint, so ONLY apply water once you are sure that all the paint has been removed).
*optional*
THen, to get rid of the dettol smell, leave them in a tub of water for a day or two, to leach out the last of the dettol.

As with all stripping guides, your mileage may vary and I can't guarantee that what works on my models will work on yours, as resin is a fickle mistress (due to different mixes in different batches of minis), I've heard that dettol can melt FW resin, so you may want to test on a throwaway mini first.

I used to use dettol, but i find fairy power spray to be a better alternative, it needs less soaking time and yields better results for me.

Do you mean the brown antiseptic stuff?

Yes the disinfectant, but make sure it's the brown stuff you get though. I've used it to strip both metal and plastic but never tried it on resin, it will take the paint off sure enough but no idea if it will affect the resin.

I've got some test pieces I can use. The Dettol I've used before was the clear spray which took a layer of wash off a model but didn't touch the paint underneath.

I've had to use multiple soaks with Testors paint remover. Patience is the key. Thanks, UK_Crow, that's the stuff I'd heard about from you UKbros.

If the model is sprayed with an actual primer and not just spray paint, the pigment in the primer can "soak" into the plastic or resin. It won't affect your model if you repaint it, but if you really want to get the few patches off, grab 1000 grit sand paper or higher and gently buff the affected area.

I've got a Land Raider I'm working on that had six coats of foundation paint on it. Thick ones, too. When I finally got down to the bottom layer, it turns out that the old Blood Red spray can GW used to sell stained the plastic orange-ish. Model's just fine, it's just a little sickly looking.
