Watch the video from a Canadian online retailer. Explains a lot. Starting June 15th, no one will be able to sell outside their own country, so US and UK retailers can't ship to Canada or Oz. Also, they are limiting the amount of direct order sales a retailer can order ($500/ month). It really sounds like they just want you to order off their website, and pay whatever rediculous prices they ask of you.

Thats exactly what they want. Whether or not people do it is another story. Im guessing they know full well they will lose a ton of customers, but will gouge who ever is left. Typical british efficiency, make something that sucks and tell everyone they suck if they cant use it.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

Yep, as Ravenous said they just want to force you to buy from their website, they know they will lose customers from it but if they can cut out the trade sales that seem to be at about 55% RRP then they only need to steal half those online retailers/FLGS customers to break even. Then they can go ahead with their plan to roll out 700-800 new stores across the US in the next 10 years and force a monopoly. It won't happen but that's what they want.

The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |

It's true, we do have a good track record of coming up with great ideas, and then running them into the ground through either horrendous mis-management or a lack of investment.
Also - a pretty endemic 'yes-men' culture, of which GW is just one example of many. Pretty sure that can be said of a lot of companies over a certain size, regardless of nationality however.

Neophyte Undergoing Surgeries

Hmmm, well I can honestly say I didn't know any of this information prior reading this entire thread. I mean, I knew gw were the epitomy of capitalist pigs but this seems immoral and barely legal. It is a shame people who are coming into the wargaming hobby are (usually) introduced through a gw product and, like me, don't know any better or just how gw treat their costumers.
I come from Tasmania, so my choices of wargaming are small I know of only warmachine (which I tried and meh) and gw.
I will keep playing the game and may buy a few bits and pieces
But I can't, in good conscience, support a company who are so blatantly in it only for profit over the happiness of their clientelle and staff

Situation is the same here and we're supplied by GW Australia.
Back when 5th ed 40K came out you could buy GW stuff from most toy stores. I doubt any carry it now. The local GW upstakes from a large shopping mall to go to some arcade in the CBD with no parking. I assume their customer base is foreign students renting in the area.
It's much cheaper buying from overseas and paying shipping. Their pricing is bizzare - why is a rhino and razorback the same price?
Why can I purchase basic plastic vehicles from FW for cheaper than I can buy at stores here?
It seems though they don't care if the hobby folds in this part of the world. Maybe things would be better if all the GW stores closed down and then they lifted their crazy regional price schemes.
Who are they kidding in this modern age of global communication that they can forever control sales to specific regions?

For the record, I was referring to mark-up. Yea that was kinda douche. Forgive me, I'm no business man.
Land Raider costs, say, $40 to make and box and ship and store. They sell it for $110 (in Australia). That profit is in fact about 180% of the cost. In a more standard way this would be 63% profit.
Either way it's a whole lot more than if they were selling it to an independent retailer for $60.
And I was referring to online sales, which is what they want.
I was just trying to spotlight the companies motivation for these questionable business practices. Not start a discussion on company accounting. Nor was I defending or bashing GW. I just want to enjoy the hobby and stay out of that garbage (though I take an interest in what the company is doing because I was, until recently, worried about the future of 40k.
