WizKids has announced plans for Star Trek: Attack Wing, a new board game in its Star Trek HeroClix line-up. The new game will be played with ship miniatures, using the FlightPath maneuver system from the Star Wars X-Wing CMG under license from Fantasy Flight Games. It will be released late this summer at Gen Con Indy.
Despite the shared mechanic, the Star Trek: Attack Wing game is a stand-alone game that is not compatible with Fantasy Flight’s FlightPath games, according to a WizKids spokesperson.
Star Trek: Attack Wing will be sold in a non-blind configuration, with three-figure boxed starters and single figure (visible) expansion packs.
Players will take the roles of commanders who can customize, upgrade, and assign famous crewmembers to their fleets. Fleets will have special stats and abilities, and unique maneuvers on separate HeroClix Combat Dials.
Games will be played on Star Trek space maps distributed via an organized play program.

I think it is interesting that they are licensing a rules system to produce a game for an IP they also had to license. I would think that would make the cost of this game higher than X-Wing.

So.....will it be using capitol ships, then? I assume as then Wizkids already has the molds from Star Trek clickybase.
I could see this as being much more fun and in-depth than the clicky game, which is just an obvious retheme of Heroclix.

Could be interesting, but I can't get my hopes up with WizKids behind it. I would love a nice, deep capital ship game within the Star Trek universe (loved the Starfleet Command PC games).

I hope the quality of the figs is good. I love trek but I don't have much hope considering the quality of their other figs. Then again I'm spoiled by FW and all the other miniatures companies. Talking bout you dreamforge. Looks like you finally got GW to make a plastic Titan if the rumors are true that is.
Does anyone know if the ships will be in scale like x wing or all ships be around the same size? If not I may skip this game.

Ive read the Enterprise is the size of an X Wing...so that scale is pretty horrible.

I'm not sure this is legitimate. Does anyone have a link to this announcement that leads directly back to a credible source at wizkids? None of the places I"ve seen it announced list sources and the picture I have seen is a heroclix Enterprise D photoshopped onto an X-Wing flight stand. My memory of Star Trek space combat is two ships sitting miles apart firing phasers and whatever else back and forth interspersed with sparks flying out of control panels and crew members flying all over the place.
Hopefully this game can capture that magic. Maybe half the game will be recreating ship to ship banter between captains.

Most PC games seem to take the mass battle from the end of DS9 as canon, in that the larger ships (Enterprise was originally a cruiser, but the D was a Battleship/Carrier/Battlecruiser) lumber around firing large volleys, and smaller ships like the defiant (there are some older ships with similar roles) and fighters performing formation fighting and maneuvers rather than just sitting around.

I agree 100%. I stayed away from the Clix because I hate out of scale minis, and if this just rehashes the same minis Ill avoid it as well.
I will give them credit for selling people the same minis 3 times. Board game, Clix game, now this one...all using the same minis, but different bases/stat dials.

Its a shame they don't realize its the miniatures with which people have a problem. I mean HeroClix has different sized bases and it would have been simple enough to have scaled ships on those progressively larger bases.
I'm interested in seeing how the rules work, but I may end up tracking down a mix of ships from other Star Trek offerings before I play.

I wish FFG had Acquired the trek license instead. I have some trek minis in 1/7000 scale. They look great together. You get to see how small a constitution ship is compared to galaxy or Sovereign class. I may just end up using those instead. Cause its wiz kids I'm expecting subpar figs.

Because larger bases = larger prices and then everyone would complain about that.

While this the rules are apparently licensed from FFG, Wizkids is handling the actual production of the minis and likely holds that license. FFG has apparently made a concerted push to do the Star Wars game in the correct scale but I'm not sure that would be possible in Star Trek. They'd have to make the Galaxy class Enterprise the size of the Millenium Falcon to get the Defiant the size of around an A-Wing... and I'd shudder to think of the size and MSRP/RRP of a Borg Cube or the Romulan Warbird controlled by the Picard clone in the last Next Gen movie. I suspect that they'll just divide the ships into relative classes (Large = borg, medium = galaxy, STTNG romulan warbird, small = defiant) and have them in scale with other ships in that class but then have a smaller but still noticable difference between the classes.

The way that Star Trek battles work as always bugged me when I think about too much. A lot of what they do, both the tactics they use the ships they use and the strategies they follow seem to be really untenable or just stupid. Most of the Mass Battles you see are just two fleets smashing into one another for no strategic or tactical reason aside from, "The enemy is here, and here we shall attack him."

To be fair "realistic" space combat is harder to show than to explain. Especially because "realistic" space combat would mean you would never get two ships in the same shot.

Given that the most consistent arguement with the miniatures is the scale, I think it'd be safe to assume sales would do better amongst Trekies but weaker amongst Heroclix players. Are HeroClix players even buying these?-Not around here. So my experiance is they're missing their target demographic. For Heroclix they sold the Sentinels and other giant sized miniatures for ~$25. If the smallest sized bases were for the Defiant and small Birds of Prey and the Enterprise D were placed on such a giant sized base size, people would easily be willing to spend as much on it. The Star Wars miniature game the Millenium Falcon is a $30 miniature and would be comparable in physical size. This to me is a reasonable parralel in price and model size.
They could have also simply gone the other direction and made a 9.5mm in length Defiant.

The simple answer is they wouldn't do a Borg Cube... Even if the scale were close, I think that'd be good enough for the majority of players. Like you said if ships of similar capabilities are made similar in size thats probably good enough. I think it needs to emphasized that the issue with scale, is really from seeing the smallest straships equal in size to some of the commonly largest. Birds of Prey shouldn't dwarf Vor'cha class attack cruisers... we could go into the scale inconsistency of the Bird of Prey due to dramatic licence but I don't think its necessary.

YMMV but skipping a borg cube in a Star Trek ship game that involves the Next Gen era is just throwing away profits. The larger scale ships likely won't be purchased in multiples by each player but most of the Star Trek fans I know would purchase one.

You lose the dramatic peril when you consider even the fastest weapons might take hours or minutes to reach a target from when its fired. In a "realistic" Star Trek, they'd most certainly have to have warp capable torpedoes and phasers would need to fire through subspace to be able to go the distance in a timely fashion... battle would be at a much more significant distances apart and it'd still take a while for anything to reach its target. I think it depends on the scale and scope of the game. Even as a large fleet action game a Borg Cube is supposed to be able to have destroyed 39 motion picture era ships. Even reducing the Enterprise D to 1" the Borg Cube would still be over 1 cubic ft. Thats not the sort of toy Wizkids is ever making.

Mythos, you make some great arguments against making a line of playing pieces in scale. You've sold me!
Seriously, the Defiant is one tenth as long as a Warbird. What kind of scale makes sense here? A choking-hazard-sized Defiant? A Shoebox-sized Warbird? Who would ever be able to afford a Romulan fleet?
Also, as a Trekker who knows a lot of toy-collecting Trekkers, I dispute your statement that Wizkids needs to make the ships in some kind of scale to appeal to Star Trek fans. What kind of OCD are you implying we have?
Also, there already exist many plastic model kits for Star Trek fans that are in scale with each other, and you can my the more obscure ships in the same scale online. So, the market has already been tapped to some extent.
