I think it depends on the scale and scope of the game. Even as a large fleet action game a Borg Cube is supposed to be able to have destroyed 39 motion picture era ships. Even reducing the Enterprise D to 1" the Borg Cube would still be over 1 cubic ft. Thats not the sort of toy Wizkids is ever making.
Which is why I said that I'd expect ships to in scale with ships within the same general size grouping but not those in other groups and the different groups not in scale with each other (but still noticably bigger or smaller). A Galaxy class would be to scale with a Next Gen Warbird but not with the Defiant or Cube.

I'm interested in seeing how the rules work, but I may end up tracking down a mix of ships from other Star Trek offerings before I play.
Because larger bases = larger prices and then everyone would complain about that.
Given that the most consistent arguement with the miniatures is the scale, I think it'd be safe to assume sales would do better amongst Trekies but weaker amongst Heroclix players. Are HeroClix players even buying these?-Not around here. So my experiance is they're missing their target demographic. For Heroclix they sold the Sentinels and other giant sized miniatures for ~$25. If the smallest sized bases were for the Defiant and small Birds of Prey and the Enterprise D were placed on such a giant sized base size, people would easily be willing to spend as much on it. The Star Wars miniature game the Millenium Falcon is a $30 miniature and would be comparable in physical size. This to me is a reasonable parralel in price and model size.
I doubt they will go through the trouble and cost of redesigning the entire line of ships they have rather than reusing the molds like they did for for fleet Captains and wave 2 of Trek Clix. People having OCD about scale is not a factor amongst collector or even most clix players. I never heard or read anyone complaining Ziran the Tester was not to scale nor any of their Hulks.

I doubt it as well. I said it before but I think the game is targeted at the wrong demographic, by targeting established heroclix players who also have an interest in Star Trek as opposed to targeting Trekies with an interest in games they've shot for a more limited audience.
The Star Wars miniature game is successful because it has good rules and good miniatures. A Star Trek game with just good rules and meh-miniatures is not a complete package. Scale doesn't need to be perfect but something at least abstractly representative would go a long way to improving the immersiveness of the game into the setting.

Wouldn't this require consistent scale in the Star Trek ships first?
The Klingon bird of prey, for instance, seems to bounce between three sizes for the same class of ship...

In the old FASA starship combat game, they solved this by saying that there are 3 classes (and four lights!) of almost identical looking BOP ships going from scout, light cruiser, to heavy cruiser in the old movie era.

Maybe you do know that game was based on a miniature board game. It was called Star Fleet Battles.

I am quite aware, but it would be very hard to get my local gaming group on board with SFB. We enjoy playing X-Wing, but if this Star Trek game is just a carbon copy of it, it just won't do it for me. I guess I just miss Battlefleet Gothic too much.

WHY couldn't they have fixed the scale of this game? At least made some attempt at it... a Galaxy class bigger than a D'deridex?
The first iteration of this game was awful, I wasted around a hundred bucks on it when it first came out, and ended up with a bunch of crappy ships and a game where starships had the "Jump" and "Fly" ability.
I held off on picking up X-wing for a while due to the price of the starter box, but once I finally caved in I ended up picking up at least one of every expansion pack and another starter box. The details on the ships are amazing, and the scale is perfect. Echoing the statement of a previous poster, I wish FFG would just get the rights to the Trek game.
