My own personal eccentricities laid bare for my fellow dakka-ites to enjoy.
When people refer to certain armies by a made up name, the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when the following sayings are used.
1) _____ Wing -- Examples include, "Wraith Wing" and "Draigo Wing"
Maybe this made sense back when things were flying around (was "Destroyer Wing" the first?). Now people refer to spamming of any one unit as ____ Wing. AHHH. The only way I don't get a bit twitchy is if it's Raven Wing. :-)
2) ____ Crons -- Examples include, "Mech-Crons" and "Foot-Crons"
You play Necrons, they're necrons. There's nothing special about them being on foot or AV13 spam. Call your list AV13 Necrons or something. *twitchy twitchy*
--
Anyway, feel free to list your army pet-name pet-peeves if you have any. Or just have a laugh at my expense. :-)

The "cutesie" names do serve the purpose of giving you an over-all feel for what they're playing. Leaf Blower, however, has been way over-used. It's gotten to the point that if you're putting 3 Leman Russ tanks on the table, that automatically makes you a Leaf Blower net-lister.

Only the best of references here, from one of my favorite Video Game Characters!
Honestly, the titles don't bother me. They're just a summation of the parts of the list that are most dangerous, or present a challenge.

The ____wing method of identification rose out of Deathwing and Ravenwing armies. And came to be applied to any list that focuses on a specific troop choice, usually as a result of a Special Character.
Nipplewing: Dante and Sanguinary Guard troops
Draigowing: Draigo and Paladins
I don't see why such a thing would ever annoy you. Its a shorthand way of identifying an army.

Don't mind at all. I like knowing exactly what I am facing. Over naming helps.

It is actually very helpful to have short-hand names for certain common list types, so that at a glance you know what you are facing.
And no, Necrons are not Necrons. Foot, Mech, and Flying Circus Necrons (or foot/mech of anything, really) all act and play EXTREMELY differently from one another, and if you don't understand that you need to get out there and play more games.

Exactly, same with Footdar vs Mechdar, it's just an easy shorthand to be able to be specific about a type of list. I didn't play when this was a thing, but I think same goes for the old "Rhino rush" lists. Rather than waste time explaining aspects of a relatively common type of list, you can just sum it up in one or two words and have people know what you're talking about.

The naming conventions make it easier to identify what type of list you're playing.
If I say "I'm playing Aircav guard" you're going to know a lot better what I'm playing than if I just say "I'm playing IG"
Same for "Draigowing" or "GK"
etc. etc.
It's all about clarity.

loreweaver, if it makes you feel less isolated, it drives me nuts too. There's a huge list of things in this hobby that set my teeth on edge, including but not limited to: Angry Marines, bronies, -wing names other than Deathwing or Ravenwing, -cron names, terms like 'gun line,' 'foot-slogger,' 'mech guard,' Tyranids in general, 'rifleman dread,' the abbreviation 'dread, clear flight stand rods, the term spam, and a list of other things longer than my arm. Tragically, I've come to the realization that I'm in the minority on these issues, and I just have to suck it up. Still, you aren't alone. Just hideously, horribly outnumbered.

A quick question maybe you can help me with: Why is it so many people seem to have a beef with the clear flight stands? Certainly a clear one makes a bit more sense than a solid opaque one (to give the slight illusion it is actually flying)?

I loathe their extreme fragility. The concept is fine, the Execution is lacking.

Names are just names and serve that purpose. The only names that annoy me are ones that have nothing to do with the Emperor, Chaos Gods, Aliens, Fleets, Battles, Planets, IG Regiments, Notable Imperial Members, Lords of Chaos, or anything else remotely 40k-ish. Contradicting does not count!
I once saw a player who had Steel Legion models but painted them like a modern day military in the Middle East complete with burning American flags. They were called Task Force American. That made me twitch.
Another was a small CSM army that was painted (horribly) with Christmas colors (bright red and mint green, candy cane horns protruding from their heads, chocolate candy skulls and swords, fluffy white beards, and elf stockings complete with stripes and yellow fluffies.) Their name... Christmas Chaos. That made me cringe.
