been thinking of building an army, not sure whether to go with imperium or choas. any thoughts? which is more fun?

Wow, this question is soooooooooooooooooooooooooo vague.

I prefer chaos for the diversity it offers. I play a death guard army but I also have a necron army. I'm a big of an imperium hater, I won't hide it.
But this eternal debate is impossible to settle in a single thread. you should read about the fluff or each and every army before making such a big choice.

not meaning to be vague, just wanted to hear opinions. leaning towards Chaos. Love the Iron Warriors. By far the most dakka of the chaos legions.

In all honesty, no mater what path you go the common citizen is a slave in some way. Slave to the immense bureaucracy of the Imperium, slave to the gods of Chaos, slave to the etherials (tau), mindless drones (necrons) slave to the bigger guy (orks) slave to tradition (eldar) slave to the more ruthless (dark eldar, i think, dont actually know much of their fluff) part of a hive mind (nids), its a pick your poison, grimdark universe

Personally i play imperium. I like the order it holds. If you dont like order than play chaos.

I'd like to play a Chaos army ... but I find the minis so FUGLY that I don't want to do anything with them.

I prefer chaos because though their worldview is harsh and cruel, it IS the truth of the universe, and they allow for more individual ambition than just slaving away for the nameless hierarchy of Terra.

Got bored painting for the imperium.
Now I paint for Chaos Space marines and feel much less oppressed.

You guys say that, but when you are bored with the cookies and doilies on the Ultramarines side of the allies chart you always come back to Chaos. Who else would be metal enough to write the opening themes for your anime armies?

Get dark vengeance and you have both and a rule book.

what is your ideal role or game play style? mine is get as many X models and stomp up and down the battlefield shooting rubber bullets ineffectively capturing objectives, Iron warriors do like their guns but they also lack in speed. they are one of the more static armies 40k has on offer outside of some IG, Tau (if you don't keep moving backwards that is) and some others. if you prefer to rush headlong go ork or chaos or especially the glass race the Dark eldar. each army has it's overall strength and weaknesses. and you must consider each before buying something and finding out you don't like it.

I dont play any imperium armies but i do play daemons,Chaos Daemons all have invulnerable saves and some have armor saves, deepstrike into battle (at least in 5th they did, i kinda stopped playing them since then) and are scary-awesome in general. Chaos Space Marine armies are almost all in power armor, are an "elite" army (you will have less soldiers than most and way less than a horde army), you get rewards for having your champs kill others, and you have followers aka Cultists (yah!).
The Imperium contains a WHOLE variety of space marines (space wolves,salamanders,ultramarines,grey knights and many others), like Chaos spacce marines they are mostly in power armor, are also an "elite" army, and each army has its own unique traits like space wolves ride massive thunderwolves and go to war with fenrisian wolves (smaller than thunderwolves).
If you are helllbent (lol chaotic ) on being either in the imperium or chaos then that's that, but as a mainly ork player i have to try to convince you to play them. They are divided into orks, grots (smaler orks basicly), and snotlings (smaller grots ). They are a horde army who is all about melee (although now most people play them mech or dakka/firepower) they are PART FUNGI!!!!!!They are highly unpredicatble (they loot tanks which have the chance to go full 6 inches stright forward regardless of whether you want to move or not) and are very fun and funny if you dont want to be completely competetive. And finaly THE SHOKK ATTACK GUN which shoots snotlings throught the warp and into it's enemies armor (although it is highly improbable and it always seems to explode one me which is doulbe 1's D.
