Well it does look like cobbled together sprue with a bunch of unconnected track pieces stuck on. If it's actually supposed to be a track drive system then the corners are too sharp and it really would help if the track pieces were connected to eachother. If you clean up the sprues so that they're not obviously sprues (remove the pegs and random small pieces), and carefully connect them rather than just haphazardly gluing them to eachother, it would look a lot better. Drive wheels at the corners would also improve the look.

It's a start and if you're just starting out scratchbuilding it beats a blank, but putting more work into it would really improve the looks.

Like Johnno said, the tracks need to be straightened out, and the sprues will need some kind of welt/rivet joints modelled on in order to look really good.

Rivets can be made out of the stuff in water filters btw. One old cartridge should suffice for like...forever..

Its ork machinary. What did you expect the smooth clean look of a space marine bike?

It's a little rough, but you should ignore Reddit(I'm a Redditor) when looking for validation. It either turns into a complete circle jerk or they absolutely hate it. I once saw a guy complain that his table top standard Termie squad only sold for $35 on Ebay, and the thread was full of people saying that he shouldn't have sold for anything less than $75.

Whilst it is an Ork bike, I think that cleaning it up a bit(connecting the tracks) would make it look a lot better. A Nob might be able to convince his boyz that a Trukk has gas when there isn't even an engine, but I don't think even Boyz would believe that it could roll without wheels. If you're looking to add Ork roughage maybe add a bit of gorilla glue to the seems so it looks like really bad welds.

It's a good start.
The biggest thing for me atm, is you haven't trimmed the 'feet' off the sprue.

I would trim the sprue into clean sticks, then probably double up on it for the main frame where the tracks are. (I can do a sketch later to show what I mean if you like.)

But yeah, definately the potenial there. :p

I expect it not to look like excess plastic from a manufacturing process.... If the sprue pieces were worked a bit more it would look much better.

Umm. It is interesting, but I'm not sure what I'm looking at. Is that supposed to be a giant track for the bike? It looks like a hut that was constructed around it.

it looks to me like the idea was to make a sort of "monwheel" out of an orc bike, and a rusty frame to hold the slack track up above the bike
but the tread is unclear

Not at all, but look at every ork model, and even the good scratchbuilds. They all look like the could work/move/function.

To the OP, a little tidying up on the model, notably making the sprues not look like sprues, and fixing the tracks being all out of sync would go a long, long ways to making the model better. It would also help, as mentioned above to change the corners on the model where the tracks go over, as it stands now, it couldn't move, lol.

Alright, now I'm back home, laptop to hand and can have a better looks - constructive criticism time!

1: As above, trim your sprues man! It make a much cleaner, more professional looking model.
2: The shape is all wrong. Your construction seems sound, but the current shape from the top, means both tracks would be trying to go in 2 different directions, and from the side, looks like they wouldn't really move at all.
3: I do not like the bike base that makes it float.... just looks wrong.

It's been painted well enough, and your actual build seems solid enough and the concepts good, but it's currently just not quite there yet.

I'll do up a sketch to give you some ideas for improvements in a bit.

I am pleased that your are proud of your kustom bike, but I think reddit got it about right.

My point was that there's a difference between just building with sprue, and using sprue as a building material. Using "it's ork stuff" as an excuse to not put the extra effort in is just lazy in my opinion.

After reading this thread yesterday, and particularly your reply Chaos Rising, I decided to give myself the challenge to build something purely out of sprue. I went for minimal tools as well, knife, files, sandpaper and clippers (the last merely for startup speed tbh). Sadly RL got in the way and I'll be a bit busy until later today as well, but here's a teaser of what I've made so far, hopefully to help visualize my point. I'll post complete WiPs later.

I appreciated all the feedback, unfortunately I haven't got the willpower required to chop it up after I've painted it.... I was hoping it would be a bit better received after I had painted it but I've been dashed :(

To the few people that commented about rounding the tracks a bit; I did! Originally it was much boxier, but using curved peices of sprue (corners) I added a bit of a rounding to the 'track' that the pads sit on. I had the same thought when I was building! 'This is gonna jam up at the corners'.

Jhonno; thats some outstanding work! I hope that sometime I'll be as handy a sculptor as you, but for now, I'm more about kitbashing.

In the end though, I am proud of it. It will center nicely in my massive custom bikenob squad! A kitbash I copied from someone here on dakka;

i wanna see more stuff like this!!! sprue is so often an undervalued source...tho when used it is often used as is like the OP did...

this now looks promising... hopefully you show your progress some more!
