The hacking collective Anonymous has said it has been "hacking" and vandalising social networking profiles linked to North Korea.

The group has issued several warnings since the country's threats have intensified.

Uriminzokkiri, a news site, has been forced offline - while Twitter and Flickr accounts have been breached.

Anonymous also claimed to have accessed 15,000 usernames and passwords from a university database.

As part of action which the loosely organised collective has called "Operation Free Korea", the hackers have called for leader Kim Jong-un to step down, a democratic government to be put in place - and for North Koreans to get uncensored internet access.

Currently, only a select few in the country have access to the "internet" - which is more akin to a closed company intranet with only a select few websites that are government-run.

The country recently allowed foreigners to access mobile internet, but this service has since been shut off.

In a message posted online, members of Anonymous wrote: "To the citizens of North Korea we suggest to rise up and bring [this] oppressive government down!

"We are holding your back and your hand, while you take the journey to freedom, democracy and peace.

"You are not alone. Don't fear us, we are not terrorist, we are the good guys from the internet. AnonKorea and all the other Anons are here to set you free."

'Tango down'
Urminzokkiri's Twitter feed started displaying messages reading "hacked" at around 0700 BST. The account's avatar was changed to a picture of two people dancing, with the words "Tango down".

On Urminzokkiri's Flickr photo page, other images, including a "wanted" poster mocking Kim Jong-un, were also posted.

Anonymous has posted what it said was a sample of the hacked information.

However, some have questioned the reliability of the details as some of the email addresses were in fact Chinese.

Also unreachable on Thursday was the website of Air Koryo, the country's airline, which launched its online booking site late last year.

Like the main Urminzokkiri homepage, it is suspected the Air Koryo site has been hit with a Distributed Denial of Service attacked (DDoS) - a technique which involves flooding a website with too much traffic for it to handle.

Although a highly secretive nation, North Korea puts considerable effort in to having a strong presence online.

Various YouTube accounts attached to the regime post news items and propaganda videos on a regular basis.

Well, so far I've only really read about them taking on Scientology, Westboro Baptists and the recent rape case expose.

So they are reading like a modern day robin hood and merry men, what is it they are doing that makes them dickholes?

In this case, the challenge for Anonymous will not be the hacking itself, but actually finding something to hack

Some of their recent crimes and hacks are against bad people, true.

A lot of their early attacks were against credit card companies and other people they felt were contributing to Big Brother/Imperialism/Whatever(can't be bothered with looking up their complaints at the moment).

They haven't just hit bad people. Some of their attacks have cost innocent people a lot of money, frustration, and time.

They want all internet to be free, no restriction on anything (including kiddie porn, depending on who's telling it), all music to be free, and so on.

I get it, but when they start shutting down record studios websites because they want free music and start stealing people's credit card information because they don't want to work, I have a problem with them. They've cross the line from "Freedom Fighters" to dickholes cyber terrorists. At least they've been focusing on people I don't care about, as of late.

I strongly suspect the Norks don't have much of value (think control systems and such) on networks that are very vulnerable unless you have someone inside that can introduce the required code.

Seems they took some form of shift of structure in 2008.

Also the supporting child porn allegation is a 'filling in the spaces' thing, I find nothing to support that and in fact the reverse seems to be the case, with the group supplying information on paedophiles to local police and engaging in attacks on servers containing child porn and taking down websites containing it. Anonymous issued a statement in 'operation darknet' that it would actively target child porn sites, their servers and users of those sites.

The credit card and paypal stuff is not cool, if it's affecting the average joe. Seems like that sort of thing is being perpetrated by certain heads of the hydra and have been becoming lessened of late.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Anonymous should stick to "righting wrongs" inside western society.

They are a social pressure group, not an international political movement.

This isnt good.

Besides who are Anonymous, anyone they want to be, so the next anonymous might not be the last one. If not already sooner or later groups of hackers calling themselves Anonymous will be factionalised, or entirely replaced by those doing the paid bidding of a government or corporation somewhere.

If say some (for example) Chinese guys called themselves "Anonymous" and started attacking enemies of China would they be any less Anonymous than the guys who targeted Scientology? By its own nature anyone can become Anonymous, and sooner or later someone else will, if they havent already.

^^ Because that's really the most horrific thing about that piece...

Having a couple of hundred tags when one would suffice, all of which are the dumb way (which use five characters when you could do it in one?) way of using that command is quite offensive to the web developer in me though. I guess the guys they kidnapped to make their sites had to get back at them somehow. =)

Anonymous isn't a single group. Different people(s) use the name when they feel like it. Sometimes people use it to blow open rape cases, sometimes people use it to DDOS websites or steal credit card info from the corporate menace.

Certain factions of Anonymous have something of a /b/romance going on with Kim Jong Un and North Korea as well, with frequent threads and posts about North Korea Best Korea and making him the Number 1 runner on the Times Magazine Man of the Year poll.
