......couch potatoes saying youre wasting YOUR time? wtf....people watching TV is the ultimate description of time wasters. I cant watch tv unless its a certain anime that peaked my interest so i actually pay attention instead of doing something else while its playing and half watching it. I painted most of my ork army watching Dota2 Livestream with TobiWan via youtube or his stream (i have a computer hooked up to my tv as a media computer, so i can do that lol). I couldnt tell you half the games i watched in any level of detail because i was painting and listening not watching lol.

An ork with an idea tends to end with a bang.

OTOH, maybe I can sell my scruffy old t-shirts to some clueless bimbo fashionista instead of chucking them?

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?

I've recently started seeing a girl and told her that I like painting miniatures and playing with them. She thought it was a bit weird until I showed her a couple of my better painted models. Then she was quite impressed and didn't think it was stupid any more.

It seems people just hate on what they dont understand sometimes. The most important thing is that its your money and its your hobby. Its not criminal so other peoples opinions mean little in the end. Do what is fun to you and anyone else can believe its a stupid hobby.

Thought I'd chime in, though my points have been made by others I think....

The only time I chide people spending money on something they enjoy (this hobby, hitting bar, travelling, shopping, anything really...) is if their obviously shirking responsibility. Do YOU feel like you're being fiscally irresponsible? If not, I wouldn't worry about it. It's not his business what you do with your cash. He decided to stretch his dollars to the brink, that's his thing. No need to even defend yourself. In fact, I'd advise against it. If he won't drop it, then don't even discuss it with him. Why bother? Sounds like he's frustrated with money, not your hobby.

It sounds less like your cousin is upset by your hobby and more like he's having money troubles and wants you to help out, but is too proud to ask.

If you're the type of person to financially help family, it may be a good idea to approach him about it. If you're not, you don't need to explain yourself at all (anything you say along the lines of, "I didn't choose to have kids," or "I spent 8 years in college for this," will just sound judgemental on the receiving end... It's better to say nothing), and if he keeps pushing, let him know it's your money and if you want to throw it away on plastic crack, that's your problem.

If you owe him money, though, you might want to pay him before you buy a new box of Kroot.

I don't get heckled about it. Most people I know are also gamers, or can at least enjoy and appreciate the effort I put in to modeling and painting even if they aren't gamers. They like the eye candy.

What your cousin is doing is wrong. As others have said, he has no right to hassle you about your money. You're putting money away, which implies you're being responsible. Even if you weren't, it's not his place to flip you gak. He's taking out his frustration over his own financial position on you, and that's wrong. I think you should stand up to him and tell him such, let him know he's stepping over the line and becoming abusive. Establish some boundaries, he's way out of line. You have no reason to justify yourself to him.

Some of my family, who I no longer speak with for other reasons, used to make me feel guilty for spending money on things just for fun. Part of that came from them living during the Depression, and being raised by those who had. That's not an excuse though. There's no point in making oneself miserable. Regardless of one's situation, you have to find ways to do things that make you happy. Even if it is less frequent. It's unhealthy, IMO, to completely deprive yourself. Again, it sounds like you're not being irresponsible, and he's just bitter that he is unable to enjoy as much disposable income. That's what happens when you have a family. I'm in the same boat, I've got friends that don't have kids, or the financial responsibilities or limitations I do. I don't berate them for enjoying that. While I am a little jealous, and would like to be able to not worry about it so much, I don't begrudge them, I just enjoy it with them and through them.

Stand up to him. Tell him his financial troubles do not apply to you, and that he has no right to transpose his guilt and frustration on you. Stop justifying yourself to him.

He's trying to make you feel bad so he can feel better about his poor life decisions.

Oh, he can support his family just fine, he just doesnt have it for doing things like expanding his house like he wanted.
And for those, Im 20 yrs old with a 16hr a week job i do in between school. i make roughly 500$ a month.
I personally think im being extremely responsible, Even with this semester not doing well i still try.
I just dont get why he is angry, he has a nice life with two extremely lovely children and a loving wife.
I think one of it might be he is a traditional republican who is a SAHD who doesnt work.

I buy a 10-man squad of IG troopers for the exhorbitant cost of AUD$48. I paint to a standard that is probably above average, and might spend 20 hours on that squad. $2.40/hour and I haven't begun to factor in the time I'll spend playing with them.

I know I can drink WAAAY more than $2.40 worth of grog an hour!

I'd tell the cuz to mind his own fething business.

Hah, well when you put it like that...

The nice thing about minis, versus many other hobbies, are that though the initial investment is high, the return on that investment is pretty much limited by your own lifespan and nothing else.

I dont like the idea of using price per mini as a basis, I prefer the time spent on said item/ price of said item.

60 Euro PS3 game, you might spend what, 20 hours on it ? Unless it's a really good game and you take a personal interest in it.

When I was younger ( and allot poorer ) I must have spent about 500 euros over 2 years in the hobby. 500 euros, for endless hours of entertainment, that i still enjoy today. How does that match up with that blue ray movie you got last year ?

On top of that, like many people have pointed out, this isn't a time killer, it's a hobby. You create these with your own hands, Each mini you make is yours, there will be no other like it because you pored a part of you into it.

This hobby involves a lot of art ; Sculpting, painting, writing ( Scenario's, campaigns, back story for your miniatures )
You are an artist mate.

If you recoil and feel bad about this, you really shouldn't mate. When you feel defensive about something that's when people look at the negative aspects of things.

Anyhow, your cousin just sounds a bit sad. Maybe call him up ? Have a chat ? People who lash out like that are hurting,

"You spent HOW much on those army men?!"

"Oh, about $900. I just got my tax return and had money to blow."

"That's insane! How could you ever spend that much on toys?"

"Well, I don't know. How much do you spend on your hobbies?"

Once you get them to start thinking about how much their hobbies REALLY cost, they usually shut up pretty quickly. 40k is tame compared to a lot of other stuff, especially when you consider that 40k has infinite replayability.

If you like it then go with it.

As far as money goes, I have models that are about 10 years old that I am using today. So it seems expensive up front (and is if you buy a lot) but if you buy a little at a time they add up to a lot of models and hours upon hours of modelling, painting, and playing time.

I fall into the married category and agree with what others before have said: that it is harder to buy (in large amounts at least) more warhammer stuff. But my wife is super supportive and nice about me and my nerdy hobbies. So life is good.
Even my parents, though hesitant, support me somewhat in it as long as my life is in order. which it is.

So why not have something fun to play that gets you out of the house and interacting with fellow nerds at the store?
It is better than sitting at home and raging at a video game or wasting time on the limitless time-wasters we have today.

Really?! He is a stay at home dad, and wants to tell you how to spend you'd money? He also said he saves $100 per month? Does he mean his wife saves $100 and he doesn't get a say? Maybe he is just resentful that he can't choose what to spend money on?

Personally, one of my best friends takes the piss out of me for 40k. She keeps trying to get me to eBay it. She is very anti, but I do not know why, as she is fine about most things.

It could be he is feeling emasculated by being a SAHD and lashing out at anything he considers unmanly. Not all men can adjust to a non-traditional role in the family. The traditional republican part would multiply the shame I would imagine, but that is no excuse to abuse you. Family gets extra passes on behavior sometimes, but just because you share a bloodline doesn't mean he gets a special right to be a dick to you. My advice; unfriend him on FB and ignore him. If he really cares he will apologize, but I'm guessing he won't.

Crimson is right. Family does get a pass for the most part. However, I have learned that there's a line. In the grand scheme of things, it could be worse. I'd consider giving him an opportunity to quit being a d bag. Then mute him. Feth that.

Let's see... Dark Vengeance ($100), an extra set of DV Tacs ($20), new Codex ($50), Command Squad ($60), and a pair of Vindicators ($58 each)... Ebay Land Speeder ($15), Ebay Attack Bike ($10), and the Ravenwing Upgrade Sprue ($15) Crap, I'm already $390 into the hobby before paint. Also, that's almost three thousand points, and can be competitive.

Now let's compare that to playing guitar (a hobby that no one seems to blink an eye at), with good enough, and loud enough, gear to play a bar. Epiphone Les Paul (~$300), Monoprice 20-foot cable ($6), Fender Frontman 2x12" ($330), $2 for picks, and eff ear plugs 'cause this is punk rock. ~$640. Could you go cheaper? Yeah, but even at this price you're fairly limited in what you can play, and it doesn't sound good (imo). :p

Does he play video games? Those are luxury items, and almost the same price as your new plastic flying boat. It's a luxury item, and it least you have something solid to show for it at the end of the day. I know a lot of people that rush out and buy the newest DVDs and video games and spend way more per month than I do on plastic men. And then they beat the video game they just spent 60 bucks on and it gathers dust. At least we can play with our overpriced plastic army mens after we're done with them. I price things in my head. I say 4 bucks should be an hour of entertainment. If you're really putting time and effort into your models, you're at least breaking even on that deal. I am a recovering alcoholic and the models give me something else to than sit on my ass and drink myself stupid. That being said, pretty much all the armor in GW became overpriced when 6th launched, and 80+ for a plastic airplane is high. I started a couple of years ago and remember buying my predator for 36 bucks. Now it's 57. At that price I would have to think hard about buying it. Still, if a plastic alien airplane makes you happy and isn't hurting anyone, good for you. A lot of people spend a LOT more money on much dumber things. Ever see how much women pay for shoes that just sit in the closet forever?

P.S.: He should see some of my old bar tabs if he thinks THAT is a waste of money, rofl.

I'm lucky that I've never really been shamed for 40k, I've had the usual but nothing terrible.

Like many other people have said it's about choices. I have a friend that has poured thousands of pounds into restoring a car, never driven it once. People may look at that as a waste, but it's his hobby and it keeps him happy, and I get to help so it keeps me happy too. I do begrudge spending the money on 40k at the moment, it is a lot of monies for what you get, but it's an investment.

Anyway, who cares what people think? 40k is constructive and has a massive community and as previously said it gives people the friends they never would have had. I've been left school 10 years, I had a good few friends, the only friends I have from school now are 40k players.

Listen to the people in this thread, not those that try and shame you, they're hypocritical. They'll spend more a week on useless crap than you will on 40k in a month.

One thing people always overlook. With this hobby (excluding rulebooks obviously) you generally don't require additional funds once you buy them to continue use. Bought Call of BattleHalo? You need internet. Ride quads/dirtbikes? They break and acrue repair expenses and need fuel to keep working. Content watching TV? That is a fat bill alone that leaves you with little/nothing at the end of the month. These models, once painted rarely, if ever, require more money. When they do have an issue you do what, glue it? That costs pennies maybe. Large numbers of people throw money at things that both cost more and hold less value than we do.

Edit: Don't forget too, if modeled/painted properly you can get equal or more market value for your models. That cable TV? Yeah, that money is gone.

I don't realy talk about my hobby and unlike others I am ashamed how much it costs . I have just one army , no models I dont use and the army cost almost twice what my mother earns in two months . I bought the models myself , but truth be told I dont think she or anyone in my family would understand If I told them how much those plastic soldiers cost . I do feel bad about it more or less all the time , but neither choice of army , nor the choice of hobby was mine to do . I just hope that non of my siblings ever goes on a GW site to check how much the stuff costs .
