I think you nailed the biggest drawback which is not having the axe available for a lord to utilize.

Agreed. If I am going to use the AoBF I really want it on a Jugger-Lord in a unit of spawn.

Switching gears. Is there any value at all to having Rend on a prince?

I can't think of a single use for it.

This is exactly what I'm doing.

It's a pretty far stretch, but if you should somehow find yourself in close combat with a Toughness 10 opponent, and not be willing to use Smash, you would still be able to wound on 6's...

Maybe adding an extra D3 to Pen? It would decrease your need to smash I suppose.

Counter-question. Is SnP enough of a detriment that I shouldn't take a nurgle prince?

Shockingly I lost not only the DP but also my maulerfied by turn 2 (neither of which did anything) and my stupid heldrake didn't come in until turn 4! I thought I was a gonner for sure. By turn 5 I managed to pull out a tie...

I love this story.

I was surely going to lose the game, I had no chance! Then my heldrake came in.

Sum's up the heldrake pretty well that xD

I'm ok with DoN if the goal is to have the prince flying around using shooting and vector strikes.

not being able to sweep with that uber high init is a big downside. so only on shooty princes really

assuming you dont have the Axe or the Mace, then you might be fighting a high T model. Can nids get T10? I dont think they can.

I haven't run the numbers but even at T10 I think less smash attacks with yield better results than more rending attacks.
Same with AV14.

Maybe I'll look at the math later.

good point, always better to smash, so no rending has no use for a MC.

*Math for Rending vs Smash attacks*

Just to see what the difference is, I'm comparing using S10 smash attacks against Rending for a CSM Daemon Prince with no extra weapon on the charge (so +1A). I'm using the worst case scenario targets of a T10 unit and an AV14 unit. No unit with have any kind of save to mitigate damage.
Here we go!

T10
Rending = 6A = 4hits = 0.66 rends = 0.66 wounds
Smash = 3A = 2 hits = 1W

Winner: Smash

AV14
Rending = 6A = 4hits = 0.66 rends = 0.44 HP
Smash = 3A = 2hits = 1.5HP

Winner: Smash

So yeah.... rending on an MC is pointless.

Daemon Prince w/ Power Armour + Wings + Black Mace + Mark of Tzeentch + Gift of Mutation + Mastery Level 3 + Spell Familiar.

Probably the best loadout for CSM Daemon Prince's IMHO
