doesnt help to have a strong list if you dont know how to play it.

i would start of getting the basics wich every ogre army will need, ogres-ironguts, sabres firebely etc,

yet again youbcould tell us what point Wise you are going for.

To Start with,

You are going to need a Slautermaster, A Bruiser BSB, And a butcher/firebelly (If not both)

Next you are going to need to get you Core,

A few Gnoblers (AS Chaff)

Then a bunch of Ogres/Iron Guts, Depending on if you want cheaper units that hit hard, and stick around a little longer (Ogres), or harder hitting a little and more costly IronGuts. Probably a mix of both.

Next you are going to want to get some Mournfangs (Nasty Monster CAV) and Sabertusks (Great Warmachine hunting / redirecting), and Maneaters ( Blocks that can eat just about any unit) and Leadbelthers ( Shooting attacks)

Finally you will want to get a couple of IronBlasters and a stonehorn/ThunderTusk.

Now you will need to work these units and try them to figure out what you like to play the best, While Ogres are one of the easiest armies to build tournament lists with, They still take some work learning how to get the best out of them, and how to avoid their weakness’s. If you do not learn the army first, do not expect to show up and table everyone!! All Fantasy armies require you to work at their construction and play, I have been running more or less the same list since the new book, and win about 90% of the time now, but when I loose, I lose big, but when I win, I am normally saying I am sorry for tabling or close to tabling the other person, While not taking minimal losses. But I have handed my list to other people, and taken a fun list and walked all over them. So it really is about how you play the army more than how you build the army.

In a nutshell:

Slaughtmaster- L4, Dispel Scroll
Firebelly or Butcher- L2, Hellheart
Brusier- BSB
Ironguts- say 2 units of 7-10, Standard of Discipline or dragonhide banner
2+ Units of mournfangs- units of 4, HA, ironfists, standard, musician
2 units of sabre tusks for redirecting
2 ironblasters

what i have listed there is approx 2300 points. i would use the rest of the points to add wargear to the heros/lord.

This i think is a very strong basis for any ogre army. if you wanted more bodies on the ground, look at swapping ironguts for normal ogres with ironfists at 11 points per man cheaper.

Hope this helps.

I would consider the Rune Maw for the BSB as well.

A 2+ save against nasty magic spells like Dwellers Below is awesome for a deathstar like Ironguts.

All of this being said, you can't go wrong buying a battalion or two. It has great stuff in it that will get your core units you need. It even has some extra gnoblars that you can build to make some small units ( I bought 2 battalions and had enough to make 2 units of 10 ). So if you start there, you should be on your way and don't have to worry about wasting money on models you won't use.

If you want an extremely bent ogre list that most people hate to face and often is restricted out of serious tournaments, then Mixer has gotten you most of the way towards the BROGRES (Broken + Ogres) list ...

... but frankly he doesn't go far enough

The most generic beatface BROGRE army looks like this:

Slaughtermaster - level 4, fencer's blades, heavy ward (armor or talisman), dispel scroll
Firebelly/Butcher - level 2, hellheart
Bruiser - BSB, crown of command or rune maw

9+ Ironguts - banner of discipline, full command
10 Gnoblars - trappers (duplicate as needed to fill core points)

4-5 Mournfang - dragonhide banner, standard, musician
4-8 Maneaters - standard, musician, braces of handguns; poison & scout / sniper / vanguard / swiftstride / ItP (sometimes with banner of eternal flame)
3x 1 Sabretusk

2 Ironblasters

Bam! 2500 points of ROFLSTOMP ... unless your opponent is smart and punishes you for keeping those sabretusks near units outside the LD bubbles, while redirecting the Gutstar away from all combats that matter and somehow dealing with the mournfang

Hmm I tried to plug that in to Army builder and I keep coming up over points or under points in troops but right at line for max points for the list ... I hate to ask but can some one dumb this down a lil simpler for me?
