This year it's in Memphis and I am going for the first time. Anybody else planning on attending?

Really wanted to. Had the time off. Had the money.

So unbelievably cheesed off by the BS idea of not revealing the Games Day model until Games Day that I decided to do something else. I'll be running D&D boardgames at a local charity tournament instead.

Great marketing idea, GW.

It really doesn't inspire confidence, does it?

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

I will be there but my.plan is to drop my models off and go see Memphis.

Personally, I have no more interest in Games Day. There was a time when I thought it would be cool, but I found other, larger, and more exciting cons to attend. Origins, GenCon, NashCon, CharCon, CinciCon, Dragon Con, GMX, and other regional cons serve a much broader audience and aren't there soley for the benefit of only one company.

Armies: Space Marines, IG, Tyranids, Eldar, Necrons, Orks, Dark Eldar.

Well you know that GW is doing this on the Cheap That is the reason I won't attend. For a so called Leader within their hobby niche, they have a piss poor track record of providing quality services since 2006.

You get more bang to the buck by attending cons in your local region.

Adam's Motto: Paint, Create, Play, but above all, have fun. -and for something silly below-

"We are the Ultramodrines, And We Shall Fear No Trolls. bear this USR with pride".

Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?

You must recite every rule of Dakka Dakka. BACKWARDS.

I'd have to agree with the sentiment already expressed in this thread. Last year my friends and I attended Gamesday when it was held in Chicago only to be massively disappointed by the entire event.

While I know GW is always there to make money, its sort of sad when their "Store" takes up over a 1/3 of the space. Also when we found ourselves uninspired by all the little events they were holding because of the massive lines to do anything, we decided to do some open gaming, but there was a lack of tables so we only got a hold of one after an hour wait. There was so much open space too I was a little confused because any other convention I've ever been to is always packed full of booths, events, etc

It was nice meeting other enthusiasts, but that doesn't make up for feeling robbed by the ticket price because I know I sure didn't get 50 dollars worth of entertainment...

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Just a question to anyone who might be in the know, not just for this GD but for them generally; How do GW get the miniatures up together these days to do the displays, set-up the display terrain and things like that?

Many years ago when I worked at the company all of the store staff were directly involved with preparing much of the display stuff for GW - usually a different store would get given a different task to do (paint 100 odd lizardmen for a massive Fantasy diorama etc.) Also you would get some of the specialist terrain guys making some of the crazy terrain you see at these shows. However, that was with 4 people working in one small store, and even then we were working overtime late into the evening to get stuff finished (unpaid, although usually a bunch of pizza boxes would arrive and of course the whole thing was massive fun).

So, in the modern day and age, where the single staff member working less hours can not even get the new releases painted for display in the store, how do they cope? I haven't been to a Gamesday in a decade now, but just genuinely curious as to how they get these massive displays out for the show, or whether they even bother with them any more? For me I think it was always a great draw for the show, having something that you genuinely couldn't see anywhere else, and I think always the most popular aspects of it.

I got my plane tickets and event tickets a while back, so I guess there's no turning back now. This'll be my first Games Day, and I can't imagine it being at all terrible. Plus, I'll be wandering around Tennessee for a week and a half leading up to it.

Do you enjoy 'community days' at your local GW, spending the day doing bland kitbashes and speed painting, while seeing other people play games?

That's Games Day, just on a larger scale, with some uninformative panels with the designers, a Forgeworld booth, and some really overpriced food.

It's in memphis this year from what I heard because the person who usually organizes games day had to leave the company due to unfortunate circumstances *family thing I'd heard* several months ago and with no way to get someone to replace her fast enough to still do the full massive games day in chi-town they moved it to the memphis bunker.

Still really wish I was going.....because I do in fact love that stuff.

Went to my first GamesDay a few years ago. While I did have some fun there were things I thought could have been done better. I think this years event was limited as far as tickets go where. When I went they kept selling tickets and GW ran out of supplies for some tables.

This, a thousand times this...

If it was local to me, of course I'd consider it, like any Con. But if you're going to travel and pay to stay, etc, there are at least a dozen better conventions to go to where you can still play GW games, AND do a whole lot more, imo.

I live near Baltimore and it was pretty great for awhile. The last year before transferring it to Memphis they actually put on a pretty good one. But it was very hit and miss- the previous year's was absolutely terrible! Unfortunately, it's subject to the whims of the higher-ups with how much funding or effort gets put into it in a particular year, how friendly they are to clubs / independent stores bringing demo tables and the like.

It's really hard to know if you're going to get something that's about on the same level as any other Con, just GW-centric, or something much worse. Why risk it when you can choose a better and more reliable Con for the same cost? Unless you are Truly local to it, of course.

I do enjoy community days, yes. I guess you've been to enough to judge, but I'll have to see it for myself to decide if I'll want to go again.

Well apparently this year in the uk it'll be a lot smaller than previous years. No more demo games basically just a massive sales area and foreword and golden demon. Now I've never actually bothered playing in the demo games but lots of the kids liked them. So now you can go buy some stuff look at golden demon and go home all for only 30 ish pounds.

Not going.

I attended at Baltimore a dozen times. Back in the day I've been an unofficial helper and transport for tables from the philly store, ran tables as as a retail partner, volunteered as a kommando, talked at the retailer seminars, and then with Ed Spettigue and my local club we produced the biggest displays at Games Day for 3 years. Some of it is still up on the website, the last one was the Crypt of Vaul. Then Ed was gone, the beancounter non-gamers took over, and I was told that if I wanted to spend several thousand dollars on my displays, they'd give me a t-shirt.

Games Day is now a low budget watered down shadow of what it used to be.

....and lo!.....The Age of Sigmar came to an end when Saint Veetock and his hamster legions smote the false Sigmar and destroyed the bubbleverse and lead the true believers back to the Old World.
