This looks like it will be great. I loved Final Liberation, and look forward to this.

If you can keep your head, while all about you are losing their's, then you have probably completely misunderstood the situation!

This and the new Space Hulk video game show quite an interesting turn for GW in the video games market, post THQ. Looks like they are taking the brand back to the niche market where it belongs rather than the attempt to compete with the likes of GoW etc.
I am really liking the sound of this so far especially the idea of your troops gaining experience from battle to battle. Huge fan of Final Liberation and Epic 40K back in the day I hope they capture the same feel.

Well you can certainly colour me interested...

I never got to play Final Liberation unfortunately, but I'd definitely like to see how this turns out.

Fair enough it was covered, I blame peoples use of titles on Dakka, and the Tequila On a more serious note, this COULD be a very interesting project, executed properly. ,

Lost interest when i read the words "hex based". No. Thank you sir.

If they're doing turn based strategy then at least give us a proper battlefield to fight on without arbitrary restriction that doesn't exist in the tabletop.

I have a very hard time seeing them forge a compelling narrative while I battle on a hex board.

As I said, this COULD be a very interesting project. They won't make it too close to the tabletop for fearing of stealing their own IP. Do you think they'd sue themselves?

...Space Marines® from the Ultramarines, Blood Angels and Salamanders Chapters...

I'm a big Ultramarines fan, don't get me wrong, and I understand that it makes sense for the poster boys to be present in the game, but surely it'd be better to have Black Templars rather than Ultramarines in a game about Armageddon? Sounds good though, can't wait for it.

It would help if they clarified which War the game will be based on
Second War
http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Second_War_for_Armageddon#.UZ6lVbXFXu0
The Second War for Armageddon is the second best known of the three wars of the system. It took place on the Hive World of Armageddon between the mighty Ork Warboss Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka and the forces of the Imperium and included regiments of the Imperial Guard and Space Marines of the Blood Angels, Salamanders and Ultramarines Chapters, along with a large Squat army. It would see the planet being swarmed with green-skinned Orks of five different tribes. The main war lasted for two years, but the actual combat continued for the next twenty years, a colossal effort for just one planet.

Third War
http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Armageddon_Imperial_Forces#.UZ6kzLXFXu0
The following Space Marine Chapters contributed forces to the Third War[1]:
Angels of Fire: 7 Companies
Angels of Redemption: 4 Companies
Angels of Vigilance: 6 Companies
Angels Porphyr: 8 Companies
Black Dragons: 9 Companies
Black Templars: 3 Crusades
Blood Angels: 1 Company
Celebrants: 10 Companies
Celestial Lions: 10 Companies
Exorcists: 12 Companies
Flesh Tearers: 5 Companies
Iron Champions: 7 Companies
Marines Malevolent: 2 Companies
Mortifactors: 10 Companies
Omega Marines: 9 Companies
Raptors: 5 Companies
Relictors: 10 Companies
Salamanders: 6 Companies
Silver Skulls: 7 Companies
Sons of Guilliman: 6 Companies
Space Wolves: 3 Great Companies
Storm Giants: 5 Companies
Storm Lords: 2 Brotherhoods
White Scars: 3 Brotherhoods

I just assumed it'd be the third, bigger wars mean better games right? I mean that IS how all games are sold now.
The fluff is also a bit light on the 2nd war, the 3rd and 1st seem to have more background to draw from and build a good game upon to please the fans, but enough big moments to keep newcomers happy who simply want to play a game about killing aliens.

I think for players who were around in the RT and 2nd Edition days there was a lot of fluff for the Second War (if I recall the 2nd Edition box had the background, and scenarios for replaying battles as a way of learning the rules). Granted the Third was better marketed and promoted by GW

The fluff is light on the 2nd, what's a good way to expand on it? Make a computer game.

And why start with the 3rd, when in two years time they can release the sequel based on the third war?

Evidently I missed this - "The game portrays the Second War for Armageddon™ in great detail, from the initial Ork landings to the final liberation of the planet"

So apologies for my confusion of which War it was based on

That would answer my question on Ultramarines instead of Templars too.

There was never any possibility of them making it too close to the table top.
Despite all the discussion around it.. GW won't let anyone make the tabletop game on a computer game.

Why?

Because many people who could sink £100's into one army, will instead sink £50 into ALL armies and have access to every angle of 40k possible.

There was never a question of it being anything like the table top.

But a game based around 40k will be interesting regardless of the format.

I'm from the future. The future of space

The world needs more turn based strategy games. I'll check this out when more info is available.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

In my wildest dreams gameplay would be like Battlefronts Combat mission Normandy game and beyond in how you manage troop movements and how turn sequences are played out. But i dont know how CC would be handled in that style.

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.

Looks interesting, anyway. It'll be a bit disappointing if you can't play as Orks without modding though.

Can you trademark the words Space Marine?

I agree - a true computer version of the miniatures game would be fantastic for us and terrible for GW, so will never happen. (Hmm, then again, some tablet games are doing very nicely by charging players for endless in-game purchases, so in theory GW could e.g. make a game where you literally pay for each new digital unit in your army. No, forget I said that, nobody tell GW! )

But seriously, not matching the miniatures game hasn't hurt previous computer games based on the 40K universe.

Somehow I dont think the Squats will be in this game even though they had an important role in the second battle for armageddon.

It’s funny. I can clearly recall quite a few sound fx from Final Liberation in my head after all these years. Specifically the sound of one of the Ork tank firing. I can’t remember its name exactly but it was the one that fired a volley of cannon balls and always seemed to decimate my Space Marine troops… Ah, great times 
