It often takes 2+ years to even get out of the red and start making a bit of money.

As a small business owner, thanks for pointing this out.
[rant]One of my local colleagues sold off his business and got a job working at Lowes as a cashier. They makemore money being a cashier and they work less hours.
Whenever I hear those News stories about how Joe Bob and Betty got laid off, but instead of getting a new job they opened their own business doing underwater basketweaving (or whatever stupid niche hobby they had before) I get upset. That basically means someone who was making $30K+ and had benefits is now making nothing and has no security or benefits. Not an improvement! [/rant]
Being a small business owner for the past 8 years, I know that 50% fail int eh first year, and another 50% fail in the second year. Something like less than 5% survive, and that doesn't mean the owner makes any money. It is even worse if you look at restaraunts and retail.

Its name was "Worthy Gaming" or "Worthy Games"
And as for what is so bad about preston GW? it is tiny. i mean really, really tiny. And it very quickly gets crowded by hyperactive kids. Also the current managment has shut down the bits trade with a ruthless and brutal efficiency. And then there is the heat issues and the fact that you have to book 1 hour sessions for your games. When you play a horde army it can take 15-20 minutes of this to deploy.

I don't know them, but a quick Google search threw up these guys

They used to be based out of Worthy Games but have a new venue/ shop called Harlequin
52 Manchester Road
Preston
PR1 3 YH
We are above Preston Carpets and Furniture the entrance is at the rear.
I'm fairly sure there are other gaming clubs around the area - Copull & Chorley Knights are quite active.

notprop wrote: Aerethan wrote:Is the UK really that spread out that another store is further than 30 minutes away? There was a time when my closest store here in CA was 50 miles from me.
Still, always sad to see stores close down.
Away from the Cities and South East of England yes it can be a trek to get to a FLGS, though not in any way similar to the US (your always within 90 miles of the sea here ).
But because of the cost of travel and congestion people are not want to travel over an hour (30 miles) except for special reasons. Travelling 50 miles seems to me a long way for some miniatures for example. Limited and expensive public transport can also make even small distances difficult in rural areas particularly for Young'uns.
That said where I live in Essex (basically the suburban sprawl from London to the East) I have about 5-6 independent games stores (inc. Wayland) and 4 GWs within about 30-40 minutes drive; and that's without entering London proper where there are circa 10 more GWs spread across Greater London. So a real mixed bagged really.
The UK is big, just not US/Austrailia BIG!
The UK isn't big not when you can easily drive from one side to the other in under 10 hours top to bottom or side to side Oh and as for Ramsden, I work near there sometimes and only live in S-o-S

What makes this GW store so bad if I may ask?
P.S. Off topic I know, but am I the only Aussie here annoyed that half our places here share a name with some place in England?
I wonder if Ipswich is a rat-hole there too. (kidding)

if your looking for a club, I've a map that shows them within the UK.
Its based on the 40K club listing on the warhammer forum and uses the ever helpful google maps service.

I always meant to show up to CACK when I was in Chorley, but alas never did, might have to get my stuff painted up to scratch and find a group. (Remember A+B games?).

Yes i know about that, im actually an active Red Steel member, one of the origionals. The big problem i have is that there is, currently no stock in Harlequins for the games. there is a mail order service but i like to browse through things i can actually touch. Also i used to spend my 2 hour college lunch breaks, on wednesdays, going in and having a game. All the staff where well known and the new ones are largely unknown. Also going in for a quick, friendly game is now not an option as Harlequins is primarily a card gaming store.
