I do not understand why people bring up said subject, or create threads about said matter. When its clearly stated from the mod staff that its not allowed to do said thing. But that may be just me I suppose

Commercial Interests: Yep, I've seen no threads that tear a new one into people that advertise on this board. Nothing bad about Battlefoam. No complaints about Mantic's quality or Raging Heroes' timeliness. Also, Nabisco makes the best tasting cookies in the world.
Piracy: Morality? Welp, we're not supposed to have threads about the topic so I'm not going to discuss it. It's a simple enough rule to follow.
Ads: I've learned of some nice services because of the ads on here. I found out about Miniature Market that way and I friggen love the place. I prefer The Warstore (it's closer and things arrive faster,) but the selection and price at MM is pretty damn awesome. I've spent/saved a fair amount thanks to that ad.
Irony: Check.

Dakka Dakka is a privately owned island. It is not a democracy, it's instead a remarkably benevolent dictatorship. If El Presidente Yakface say no piracy speaking or His Holiness the Burner of Lego says you must all now write in purple text, they can, it's their island.
Cries of 'freedom' and 'stifling rights' are quaint bs, you have only the rights afforded to you here, by a remarkably tolerant and forgiving admin and moderation.
Put me in charge for a week, you'd all be screaming for them to come back, I can assure you... well, those of you who were still able to log in...
Piracy is just that, it is illegal, we can debate where it stands on the sliding scale of evil (speeding to mass genocide) til the cows come home and I hold my own views on piracy's morality vs the morality of companies indulging in price gouging... But it is an illegal practice and therefore ill suited as a topic for a respectably run and popular/populous forum as dakka is.
There has been no great dictate that it's the purvey of the damned and that anyone who does it should get out, just a quietly resolute instruction to stop posting threads about it here. So, make the educated decision if you find that request fair enough or if you are so insulted by it that you need to leave Dakka Island.
As to adverts, you can switch them off when you become a DCM, I left them on because I might actually find them interesting. I'm just sad GMM stopped advertising as I would often stop over there to see his new projects and ponder what I'd get done if I were a rich man. Oh and I wish we could ditch the google ads, they are rarely relevant.

That's basically what I was trying to say, only I was less eloquent Regardless of the morale and ethical implications, which can be debated all day long, it is illegal and Dakka is a private entity and so is within it's right to tell you to not post about it.

I don't find the Ads here intrusive.
To be honest, I've found them helpful, since they tend to targeted at the gaming community, and not just whatever key words happen to be on the page.
If I ever get around to opening my own miniatures gaming shop or Kickstarter, I would advertise on Dakka.
-------------------
Personal views on Piracy aside, Dakka is not an appropriate venue for that sort of discussion. It's against the guidelines here, so it's a nontopic.
Part of me always suspects people asking for pirated stuff on a forum like this as corporate spys looking for targets.

I've purchased things from the sponsors using the ads at the top right. As a DCM, I've opted not to turn them off in case a cool new product pops up.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

*SHUDDER!*
But, seriously... I have no problem with the 'No Piracy' rule.
Dakka is one of the few sites where my ad-blocker is turned off.
And, given that I have seen MODs MODing MODs here... it seems pretty fair. Its is not a good-ol'-boys club when the mods are speaking as themselves they need to follow the same rules.

I don't see a problem with a thread on the morality of piracy, but no links and such.
i wonder if the same people who buy these pirated goods are against faked branded goods.
I only like to buy funny knock offs like ; Dolce & Banana and here in Japan Kuma (Japanese for bear) instead of Puma.

I do.
Because it quickly becomes an exercise in justifying something that is illegal and ultimately harmful to the hobby, advertisers and site.
And a thread where we all hold hands and say piracy is bad is just dull.

How can you justify it? it is stealing plain and simple.
I can understand why some would do it (money, or surviving ).
But if the thread degenerates like you expect, well lock-di-lock!

While I respect not wanting to discuss illegal things, I think it's worth discussing piracy in the context of how it actually affects the hobby and also in the context of how copyright laws work. My personal opinion is that I do not condone piracy, but I accept it's going to happen and it's not as simple as "it's harmful to the hobby", as I think a lot of people who pirate things tend to also be big spenders in the hobby.
Not trying to "justify" it, but instead just get a realistic outlook on it.
I think a lot of DRM on video games comes from publishers not having a realistic outlook on piracy, so instituting policies which harm legitimate customers more than pirates, OR using piracy as a scapegoat for poor development and marketing or for instituting policies which are anti-consumer (I personally think a lot of DRM has more to do with killing used sales than actual piracy).
Monster Rain wrote:I'd like to thank all the pirates for pay-to-play games, microtransactions, and the XBone.
Seriously, it's all your fault.
It's as much the publishers fault for reacting to piracy in such a way. So often DRM is ineffectual and just hurts legitimate customers instead of pirates. Also I don't really think pay-to-play games and microtransactions are to do with pirates, the former is an attempt to market games in a new way and the latter is an attempt to squeeze more money out of a game above and beyond the regular $50/60 price tag.
