I was travelling to Milwaukee (flying) and had all of Saturday to myself, I knew there was a
GW shop not too far from the hotel so I thought I'd bring a compact, 1000pts,
DW army (everything fit in a todler shoe-box!) and pick up some games. This was more for fun than to be competitive but I ended up winning all of the 3 games I picked-up against extremely mobile armies
The list:
Headquarters:
Belial
Librarian,
TDA, force axe
Troops:
DW termies x5,
HF
DW termies x5,
CML
DW termies x5,
PC, 1xTH/
SS, 1xLC
1000pts on the dot for 17 models
GAME 1
I played against an all-Ravenwing army, he brought:
Sammael
3-man command squad, champ, grenade launcher,
RW banner
6x bikers with 2 flamers
5x bikers with 1
MG
2x Typhoon Land Speeders
Standard deployment, standard (D3+2) objective mission (I think it was Big Guns but neither one of us had Heavies)
I got first turn, I deployed my libby and the
CML squad out of range/sight of his guns behind a short building (in case he ceised) in the hope of moving on top of the building during the movement phase. They ended up just using the
CML for the rest of the game as they were out of range of the bolters...
He used his scout moves to reposition all his units but failed to properly bubble-wrap Sammael (who had joined the command squad).
PC-squad deep-struck and took a big chunk out of the dual-flamer squad and Belial/
HF-squad managed to completely wipe the command-squad and Sammael upon arrival!

I did get really good to-wound rolls, but by-far my most efficient Vengeful Strike to date.
It was very much an uphill battle for him from that point on as he lost pretty much all his AP2 weaponry before being able to use it!
I proceeded to finish off his bike squads over the next 3 turns.
He called defeat at the end of turn 4 (just had the Typhoons left)
GAME 2
Against same
RW army
Standard deployment, The Relic.
I went second. He kept his command squad and Sammael in reserve to attempt an outflank move.
I deployed my libby and
CML squad as close to the Relic as I could while still having some cover. Between the scout move and normal movement he was able to put a few shots into the
CML squad, I think I lost 1 termie.
PC squad deep-struck but mishap!

Back in reserve and didn't show up until turn 3. Belial and
HF squad deep-struck on top of the Relic and captured it, was able to kill a couple of bikes in the dual-flamer squad.
Turn 2, his command squad came-in, weakened Belial squad with grenade-launcher and plasmaed it pretty good, was left with Belial and srgt.
We spent the next 5 turns killing each-other's troops (my
PC squad failed to do much damage), thankfully I kept control of the Relic until we had both lost our troops.
By the end of turn 5 he had lost all of his bikes and he kept assaulting and hit-and-running with the command squad (he was left with Sammael and the banner/grenade guy)
By the end of turn 7 I just had Belial with 1 wound left, making all his saves from the Typhoons shooting at him and Sammael assaulting him, I only won thanks to 1st blood (1-0)!
GAME 3
Against a very mobile
DE army, I apologize for butchering the names but to my best recollection here's what he had:
Archon + 8 standard foot soldiers in skimmer (raider?) both the skimmer and one soldier had the S8 AP2 shot
8 standard foot soldiers in skimmer same as above (minus the
HQ)
8 standard foot soldiers in skimmer same as above (minus the
HQ)
5 foot soldiers (1 with S8 AP2 shot) in smaller skimmer (12 poisoned shots)
2 Flyers, each with 2 S8 (or 9)
AP 2 shots a piece and a single S8
AP 2 bomb each
Standard deployment, Purge The Xenos mission (kill-points)
I went second and it was a very difficult battle from the start, he had excellent rolls (specially with the AP2 guns) and I lost termies very fast; on top of that I had some bad rolls (perils on the Libby, get hot on the
PC
). My only saving-grace is that it was a Kill-Points battle.
By the end of turn 2 Belial and the
HF squad was gone and sadly barely made a dent in his army.
I spent the next 3 turns popping all of his skimmers (thanks to
CML and glances with storm-bolters)
On turn 3 his flyers came in and shredded my
CML squad (only Libby left standing, he finished off the 5 man troop squad before getting killed again by the flyers on turn 5).
Thankfully my
PC squad (down to 3 termies) managed to get in an assault with one of his troop squads, I lost the
TH and srgt to failed armor saves

but my
LC termie refused to die

andproceeded to finish the squad off over turns 4 and 5, the lone survivor failed his
Ld test and ran away.
We rolled and the game ended at the end of turn 5
he killed: 2
DW squads, Belial, libby, and Slay the Warlord for 5 points total
I killed: 3 skimmers, 2 squads and First Blood for 6 points but... wait for it... My
LC termie was in his deployment zone. He saves the day by staying alive and wins the game 7-5.
Overall it was really fun to play and win with the Deathwing specially against mobile armies that they would normally struggle a lot with. Obviously deepstriking helped a lot to put the hurt on the enemy right away and get in good position early on.
But mainly I felt that I had to play the mission and mainly prevent the enemy from winning instead of trying to kill as much stuff as possible.
Special mentions to Belial for making all kinds of saves on game 2 and to my
LC termie for chopping wood and saving game 3 (he got promoted to
DW command squad

)
